Influence of blood meal source on the biological parameters of Triatoma pallidipennis (Heteroptera: Reduviidae) from Mexico.

Chagas disease is one of the most important vector-borne diseases in Latin America, including Mexico. Triatoma pallidipennis (Stål) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) is a Mexican triatomine vector commonly associated with different hosts. The influence of six blood meals (rabbits, rats, mice, dogs, cats and chickens) on six biological parameters of the biology of T. pallidipennis was evaluated. A significant difference was found in the period of egg-to-adult development between the five mammalian feeds (mean 195 days) and the chicken feed (221 days). The probability of survival was significantly lower i…

Control of rural house infestation by Triatoma infestans in the Bolivian Chaco using a microencapsulated insecticide formulation.

BACKGROUND: Triatoma infestans, the main vector of Trypanosoma cruzi (causative agent of Chagas disease) has been successfully eliminated over much of its original geographic distribution over the southern cone countries of South America. However, populations of the species are still infesting houses of rural communities of the Gran Chaco region of Argentina and Bolivia. This study reports for the first time a large-scale effect of a vector control intervention using a microencapsulated formulation of organophosphates and insect growth regulator on house infestation by T. infestans, in the sou…

Influence of the quality and quantity of blood ingested on reproductive parameters and life-span in Triatoma infestans (Klug).

In Triatominae, female fecundity and fertility may be affected by age, adult nutritional status (i.e., blood meal source and amount of blood ingested) and number of matings. Triatoma infestans (Klug) is the main vector of Chagas disease in southern South America and considering that reproductive success is intimately associated with the potential for colonizing or re-colonizing new ecotopes in endemic areas, we studied whether the blood meal source and the amount of blood ingested have influence on reproductive parameters. We constitute two groups: couples feeding regularly on guinea pigs and …

Sylvatic and peridomestic populations of Triatoma pseudomaculata are not significantly structured by habitat, as revealed by two genetic markers.

Chagas disease remains a public health concern in Brazil and other Latin American countries, mainly due to the potential domiciliation of native triatomine species. We analyzed the genetic variability of Triatoma pseudomaculata in sylvatic and peridomestic ecotopes throughout three localities in the northeastern state of Bahia, Brazil. We studied polymorphisms generated by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and isoenzyme electrophoresis analyses. Based on RAPD analysis, each specimen was assigned to one of three genetic clusters. Although all sylvatic specimens from one locality were grou…

Effects of topical application of fipronil spot-on on dogs against the Chagas disease vector Triatoma infestans.

We assessed the insecticidal effects of fipronil spot-on applied to experimental dogs on the blood-feeding success and other vital parameters of the Trypanosoma cruzi vector Triatoma infestans. In the first trial, the cumulative mortality of 30 third or fourth instar nymphs exposed to eight fipronil-treated dogs differed significantly from those exposed to untreated dogs at 1 week post-treatment, but not at baseline or at 2-6 weeks post-treatment. In the second trial, the effects of multiple exposures to fipronil-treated dogs on bug population dynamics were assessed. A population of 80-84 bugs…

[Control of Triatoma sordida in rural peri-domestic environment of the Porteirinha municipality, Minas Gerais, Brazil].

Triatoma sordida, a predominantly peridomestic species, is currently the triatomine species most frequently collected in Brazil. To evaluate the effectiveness of control activities against this species, a survey to determine infestation rates was carried out in October 1993 in 12 rural localities in the municipality of Porteirinha, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. In the survey, 772 T. sordida were captured, of which 3.6% were infected with Trypanosoma cruzi. Of the 406 dwellings investigated, 34.9% were infested, and 27.6% of 695 peridomiciliar ecotopes contained T. sordida. The area around the…

Trypanosoma cruzi: comparative studies of infectivity of parasites ingested by Triatoma infestans and those present in their feces.

Artificial feeding of the insects with whole blood containing trypomastigotes resulted in triatome infection; the parasites were present in the host feces after 15--30 days and, when inoculated into mice, elicited parasitemia in 100% of the cases and deaths in 20--70%. This mortality indicates a reduction of the original infective capacity of the bloodstream form, which kills 100% of the mice even when inoculated with a single trypomastigote. When triatomes were fed whole normal mouse blood containing culture forms of low infective capacity (TulL), mice inoculated with feces containing the pro

Feeding and defecation behavior of two populations of Triatoma longipennis (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) from Central Mexico.

Chagas disease is one of the most important vector-borne diseases in Mexico. Triatoma longipennis (Usinger. 1939) is one of the most epidemiologically important vector species of Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas, 1909), the etiological agent of Chagas disease. This study reports the third collection of T. longipennis from the state of Hidalgo, Mexico. This paper evaluates and compares feeding and defecation behaviors for each instar of two populations of T. longipennis recently detected in Hidalgo, Mexico. No significant differences were noted between the two populations in the mean time to initiate …

Integrating citizen notifications and geospatial tools to monitor urban Triatoma infestans occurrence from San Juan, Argentina.

In Argentina, urban transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causal agent of Chagas disease, has emerged in recent decades, particularly in western cities where urbanization and environmental heterogeneity promote the occurrence of Triatoma infestans. This study analyzes the macro-scale spatiotemporal distribution of community-based notifications of T. infestans in the metropolitan area of San Juan, Argentina, and their association with environmental and sociodemographic variables. We integrated georeferenced notifications recorded by the provincial vector control program, utilizing a strictly c…

Thermal preferences and limits of Triatoma brasiliensis in its natural environment--field observations while host searching.

The goal of this work was to explore the thermal relationship between foraging Triatoma brasiliensis and its natural habitat during the hottest season in the state of Ceará, Brazil. The thermal profiles were determined using infrared analysis. Although the daily temperature of rock surfaces varied in a wide range, T. brasiliensis selected to walk through areas with temperatures between 31.7-40.5ºC. The temperature of T. brasiliensis body surface ranged from 32.8-34.4ºC, being higher in legs than the abdomen. A strong relationship was found between the temperature of the insect and the temperat…

Triatoma rubrovaria (Blanchard, 1843) (Hemiptera-Reduviidae-Triatominae) III: patterns of feeding, defecation and resistance to starvation.

Data from the Chagas Disease Control Program indicate a growing domiciliary and peridomiciliary invasion of Triatoma rubrovaria in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, where it has become the most frequent triatomine species captured there since the control of T. infestans. Bionomic characteristics that could influence the vectorial capacity of T. rubrovaria as vector of Trypanosoma cruzi were evaluated: patterns of (i) feeding, (ii) defecation, and (iii) resistance to starvation, using insects fed on mice. Fifty three percent of the females showed a defecation pattern conducive to chagasic transmi…

Spatio-temporal dynamics of deltamethrin resistance in Triatoma infestans: Challenges for chagas disease vector control in Argentina.

The emergence of insecticide resistance in Triatoma infestans, driven by extensive pyrethroid use, represents a major obstacle to effective Chagas disease vector control in Argentina. Given the spread of resistance and the impact on control efforts, understanding its geographical and temporal patterns is crucial for guiding resilient and effective intervention efforts. This study presents a spatio-temporal analysis of deltamethrin resistance across nine Argentine provinces during 2013-2023 period, based on biotoxicological assays of T. infestans populations collected from 155 locations, comple…

Identification of blood-feeding sources in Panstrongylus, Psammolestes, Rhodnius and Triatoma using amplicon-based next-generation sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Triatomines are hematophagous insects that play an important role as vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. These insects have adapted to multiple blood-feeding sources that can affect relevant aspects of their life-cycle and interactions, thereby influencing parasitic transmission dynamics. We conducted a characterization of the feeding sources of individuals from the primary circulating triatomine genera in Colombia using amplicon-based next-generation sequencing (NGS). METHODS: We used 42 triatomines collected in different departments of Colombia.

cDNA isolation and characterization of two vitellogenin genes in the Chagas' disease vector Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera, Reduviidae).

Two vitellogenin genes (Vg1 and Vg2) were identified in the Chagas' disease vector Triatoma infestans. The putative coding sequence corresponding to Vg2 was found to be 5553bp long, encoding 1851 amino acids in a single open reading frame. The comparative analysis of the deduced amino acid sequences from Vg1 and Vg2 cDNA fragments of T. infestans revealed 58.94% of identity with 76.43% of homology. The phylogenetic tree based on the complete Vg amino acid sequences of hemimetabolous insects unambiguously supported two clusters, one consisting of Vg sequences from dictyopteran and the other con…

Two Triatoma dimidiata clades (Chagas disease vector) associated with different habitats in southern Mexico and Central America.

Triatoma dimidiata is the only reported Chagas disease vector in Campeche, Mexico. The purpose of this study was to determine the genetic variability of vectors from Campeche coastal and rain forest areas and establish a phylogenetic relationship with other T. dimidiata populations by analyzing the internal transcribed spacer-2 (ITS-2) region. The sequence length of samples from Campeche ranged from 469 to 478 basepairs. The ITS-2 variability among the populations enabled us to classify them into two clades with an 18-22 nucleotide difference. The genetic distance (0.042) between them confirms…
