BACKGROUND: Pulmonary tuberculosis may result in haematogenous and lymphatic extension in case of failure of early detection, or immunocompromised status, leading to extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Rare sites of extrapulmonary tuberculosis include the gastrointestinal tract, musculoskeletal system, genital tract, middle ear and pericardium. Histopathological findings of macro-confluent granuloma with or without caseous necrosis, along with detection of acid-fast bacilli (AFB) on Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN) staining, and GeneXpert for detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA, are key in establishing a d

Tuberculosis of the rectum is rarely reported, even from areas where tuberculosis, and gastrointestinal tuberculosis in particular, is prevalent. The authors report a case of long tubercular stricture of the rectum and distal part of the sigmoid colon in a 12-year-old girl. Because of nonspecific symptoms and noncharacteristic radiological and endoscopic features, the diagnosis of this rare entity rests mainly on histological evidence of the classical tubercle in a surgical biopsy specimen.

The purpose of this article is to review and illustrate the spectrum of computed tomography (CT) appearances of abdominal tuberculosis. Tuberculosis can affect any organ or tissue in the abdomen, and can be mistaken for other inflammatory or neoplastic conditions. The most common sites of tuberculosis in the abdomen include lymph nodes, genitourinary tract, peritoneal cavity and gastrointestinal tract. The liver, spleen, biliary tract, pancreas and adrenals are rarely affected, but are more likely in HIV-seropositive patients and in miliary tuberculosis. This article should alert the radiologi

Tuberculosis is a common bacterial infection that mainly affects the respiratory system; however, it can involve other structures such as lymph nodes, pericardium, pleura, central nervous system, gastrointestinal system, and skeletal system. Skeletal tuberculosis is secondary to pulmonary and abdominal tuberculosis. Skeletal involvement generally involves the vertebral column, hip, and knee joint. Tuberculosis of small peripheral joints is an uncommon entity. In this report, we report tubercular arthritis of the wrist joint in a 40-year-old female patient who presented with swelling and pain i

Abdominal tuberculosis (TB) can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, solid organs, peritoneum, or lymph nodes. The diagnosis of abdominal TB is usually delayed due to a lack of specific clinical signs and symptoms and the mimicking of other intra-abdominal diseases. We present a case of gastroduodenal tuberculosis with peripancreatic lymph node involvement presented as a gastric outlet obstruction that was treated conservatively with anti-tuberculosis medications.

Examination of 119 patients with abdominal tuberculosis permitted the description of the characteristic semiotics of the illness. Today the patients with abdominal tuberculosis are mainly women of child-bearing age with a long-term tuberculosis catamnesis and intoxication, with a history of tuberculosis of different sites, those suffering from tuberculosis or its sequels at present (64%), those with pains (94%), discomfort or swelling of the abdomen (79%), malfunction of the gastrointestinal tract (65%), weight loss (86%), malnutrition (72%), anemia (63%), not infrequently with inflammatory in

Intestinal tuberculosis is an uncommon form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis that may mimic neoplastic or inflammatory disorders, leading to diagnostic delays. In endemic regions, recognition of atypical imaging presentations remains challenging. We report the case of a 58-year-old man with severe unexplained anemia, progressive asthenia, and weight loss without overt gastrointestinal bleeding. Contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography revealed focal involvement of the distal ileum extending over approximately 150 mm, characterized by marked circumferential mural thickening measuring up to

Tuberculosis and mucormycosis coinfection has rarely been reported in the medical literature. We present a case of gastrointestinal (GI) mucormycosis in a diabetic patient with disseminated tuberculosis. Early diagnosis, addressing the risk factors for mucormycosis, surgical debridement, and timely antifungal treatment are the mainstay of care.

In developing countries, tuberculosis (TBC) is commonly associated with inadequate socio-economic and sanitary conditions. Currently, in Western countries, TBC is often linked with HIV infection, an ageing population or trans-global migration. Approximately two out of ten TB cases worldwide are extra-pulmonary, of which abdominal tuberculosis accounts for 11%-16%. The Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex involves the abdomen as primary or secondary localization (hematogenous spread or from pulmonary foci or infected neighbouring organs). Abdominal TBC can infect the gastrointestinal tract, perit

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Abdominal tuberculosis (ATB) poses significant diagnostic challenges due to its varied clinical manifestations and its ability to mimic other diseases. Histopathology is a promising diagnostic tool to diagnose ATB. This narrative review aims to synthesize evidence on the evolving role of histopathology in diagnosing ATB, highlighting its integration with molecular and microbiological diagnostics, and discussing its limitations and emerging technologies.
METHODOLOGY: A structured search of databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar was performed,

RATIONALE: Systemic lupus erythematosus can involve the gastrointestinal tract, but lupus enteritis (LE) with ileocecal ulceration and generalized lymphadenopathy as an initial presentation is exceptionally rare. In regions where tuberculosis (TB) is endemic, overlapping clinical and imaging findings can lead to diagnostic delays and inappropriate treatment. This case highlights the challenges in differentiating lupus enteritis from abdominal TB and underscores the importance of considering autoimmune etiologies in atypical gastrointestinal presentations.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 20-year-old woman

Tuberculosis in childhood is clinically challenging, but it is a preventable and treatable disease. Risk factors depend on age and immunity status. The most common form of pediatric tuberculosis is pulmonary disease, which comprises more than half of the cases. Other forms make up the extrapulmonary tuberculosis that involves infection of the lymph nodes, central nervous system, gastrointestinal system, hepatobiliary tree, and renal and musculoskeletal systems. Knowledge of the imaging characteristics of pediatric tuberculosis provides clues to diagnosis. This article aims to review the imagin

Hydatid cyst is a parasitic infection caused by Echinocococcus granulosus. The coexistence of tuberculosis and cardiac hydatid cyst is extremely rare and generally seen in developing coun- tries. Here, we describe a unique case of a patient presenting with cardiac and gastrointestinal symptoms, who has coexistence of cardiac hydatid cyst and peritoneal tuberculosis.

Gastroduodenal tuberculosis (GDTB) is an uncommon condition which can mimic other gastrointestinal disorders. It usually occurs secondary to pulmonary tuberculosis. We describe two young Somalian patients who presented with abdominal pain and gastric outlet obstruction. GDTB was diagnosed in both patients and they were successfully treated with antituberculous drugs.

Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS) is a rare clinical entity presenting as acute or chronic upper gastrointestinal obstruction. It occurs due to compression of third part of duodenum between abdominal aorta and overlying superior mesenteric artery caused by a decrease in angle between the two vessels. Rapid loss of retroperitoneal fat, in conditions leading to severe weight loss is the main factor responsible for this disorder. Superior mesenteric artery syndrome in association with abdominal tuberculosis has not been reported earlier to the best of our knowledge. Therefore, an unknown

A woman in her 70s presented to our hospital with epigastric pain, back pain, and weight loss. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy was performed, and numerous protuberances, which were suspected to be submucosal tumors, were found at the gastric corpus. The patient was diagnosed with gastric tuberculosis based on the biopsy results of these protuberances. Histopathological analysis demonstrated non-caseating epithelioid granuloma. A positive culture for Mycobacterium tuberculosis was also obtained on gastric juice analysis and confirmed using polymerase chain reaction assay. In the rapidly aging popula
