OBJECTIVE: To establish a unified tuberculosis staging system for trunk and limbs joints (Osteoarticular tuberculosis At Qinghai Fourth People's Hospital, QFOT), and verify the rationality and applicability of the classification system.
METHOD: Searching our hospital's electronic medical record database from 2019 to 2022, including data of patients with bone and joint tuberculosis according to preset inclusion and exclusion criteria, and formulating a bone and joint tuberculosis staging system of the Fourth People's Hospital of Qinghai Province based on imaging data related to bone collapse,

BACKGROUND: In view of the current difficulty of clinically diagnosing osteoarticular tuberculosis, our aim was to use mass spectrometry to establish diagnostic models and to screen and identify serum proteins which could serve as potential diagnostic biomarkers for early detection of osteoarticular tuberculosis.
METHODS: Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) was used to select an osteoarticular tuberculosis-specific serum peptide profile and establish diagnostic models. Further, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) wa

Osteoarticular tuberculosis (OAT) may cause severe complications and disability. Due to its indolent nature, OAT is difficult to diagnose in the early stages. Diagnosis by conventional culture is time-consuming and insensitive, and polymerase chain reaction-based molecular diagnostic methods are incapable of excluding co-infections. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) may identify a broad spectrum of microorganisms, including Mycobacterium, bacteria and fungi, in clinical specimens. Therefore, the diagnosis of OAT may be rapidly performed using mNGS. The present study reports on a ca

A few studies are dealing with the role of fine-needle aspiration cytology in diagnosing osteoarticular tuberculosis (TB). The present study was undertaken to study the cytomorphological features of six cases of osteoarticular TB throughout 1 year, diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration cytology. The Papanicolaou, Giemsa, Ziehl-Neelsen, and periodic acid-Schiff stains were used in each case. The sampled material was also cultured in Lowenstein- Jensen media for Mycobacterium species and polymerase chain reaction assay for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Histopathological findings were correlated when

Delay in diagnosing osteoarticular tuberculosis (OATB) contributes significantly to morbidity by causing disfiguration and neurological sequelae. The delay caused by conventional culture and the expertise and expense involved in other nucleic acid based tests, make LAMP (loop-mediated isothermal amplification) assay a favorable middle path. We evaluated LAMP assay using IS6110 and MPB64 for rapid diagnosis of OATB by comparing with IS6110 PCR and culture. LAMP assay was performed on 140 synovial fluid and pus samples (10 culture-positive proven cases, 80 culture-negative probable cases, and 50

BACKGROUND: Osteoarticular mycobacterial infections significantly impact patient health by causing severe joint and bone diseases. However, clinical experience in diagnosis and treatment remains limited.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated the clinical characteristics and prognosis of patients with osteoarticular mycobacterial infection.
METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 74 adult patients diagnosed with osteoarticular mycobacterial infection, including 57 (77%) with tuberculosis (TB) and 17 (23%) with non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infection, between January 2009 and January 2023 from a terti

BACKGROUND: Pediatric osteoarticular tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health challenge, particularly in resource-limited settings, where delayed diagnosis and treatment frequently lead to severe long-term complications. Despite advancements in TB control, skeletal TB in children is often misdiagnosed due to its non-specific clinical presentation, contributing to poor outcomes such as joint deformities, growth disturbances, and chronic pain. The complexity of diagnosing osteoarticular TB is further exacerbated by the limited sensitivity of conventional diagnostic tools and the ove

BACKGROUND: Conventional diagnostics for Osteoarticular Tuberculosis (OATB) are slow and prone to inaccuracy due to low bacterial load, delaying treatment. Xpert MTB/RIF is WHO-recommended for TB cases, but there is a dearth of literature for non-spinal OATB.
METHODS: In a 4-year study (Sept 2016-Feb 2020), non-spinal osteoarticular infections were retrospectively analyzed. Xpert MTB/RIF sensitivity and specificity were evaluated against tuberculosis defined by histology and culture against patients having culture-isolated pyogenic infections as a reference standard for negative tuberculosis.

Osteoarticular tuberculosis (OATB) is one of the most common clinical types of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB), characterized primarily by progressive bone destruction and high morbidity. Standard anti-tuberculous chemotherapy has limited efficacy in reversing established bone damage. Vitamin D, a fat-soluble steroid hormone with immunomodulatory and bone-metabolic properties, shows promise as an adjunctive therapeutic agent. Mechanistically, vitamin D enhances anti-tuberculous immunity through multiple pathways: inducing antimicrobial peptide LL-37 expression, activating autophagic flux, a

OBJECTIVE: Osteoarticular tuberculosis (OATB) is one of the most common forms of extrapulmonary tuberculosis; however, limited epidemiological data are available on this public health concern worldwide, especially in developing countries. This study aimed to analyze the clinical epidemiology and drug resistance characteristics of OATB cases in Hunan province which located in South-central China.
METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled OATB patients with Mycobacterium tuberculosis culture positive at Hunan Chest Hospital from January 2013 through March 31, 2022. The multiple demographic, clinical
