Renal transplant recipients carry a relatively high risk of developing tuberculosis (TB). In most cases, active TB is the result of reactivation of a latent infection and is located in the lungs. In these patients, clinical presentation of TB can often be atypical and there is a high risk of dissemination and high mortality rates. Therefore, the use of invasive procedures for proper diagnosis is recommended, as well as anti-tuberculosis therapy instituted whenever there is a strong suspicion of TB on clinical grounds, even without microbiological evidence. The treatment of active TB in renal t

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health problem in our country. Its diagnosis in immunodeficient patients is difficult. In this retrospective study, we analyzed the prevalence, clinical presentation, and outcome of TB after renal transplantation (RT) in our Tunisian team's experience. Among 359 renal transplant recipients, 9 (2.5%) developed TB at 49.6 months (range, 3-156 months) after RT. There were 7 men and 2 women of mean age 37.8 years (range, 15-53 years). The organs involved included lymph nodes in 1 case; lung in 5 cases; genitourinary system in 1 case; rachis in 1 case; pleur

Findings of urogenital tuberculosis in computed tomography have been reported seldom although this manifestation of the tuberculous disease is on the second place following pulmonary tuberculosis. We report on a 52 year old women suffering by culturally proven urogenital tuberculosis. The enhanced computed tomography showed hypodense lesions clearly on the cortex border of the kidney. Other findings of renal tuberculosis reported in the current literature as hydrocalices or hydronephrosis were not seen at all. We postulate that the described finding is characteristic for an early stage of rena

A 74-year-old woman presented with a 3-day history of fever and left flank pain. The imaging study revealed a huge complicated cyst in the left kidney. The cyst had a mass effect to the abdomen. We performed laparoscopic renal cyst unroofing. The histopathologic examination disclosed renal tuberculosis of the cyst wall and cystic fluid. Renal tuberculosis is not uncommon; however, renal tuberculosis presenting as a renal cyst is very rare.

The association of renal cancer and renal tuberculosis is uncommon. While the incidental discovery of renal cell carcinoma in a tuberculous kidney is a classical finding, the discovery of tuberculous lesions after nephrectomy for cancer is exceptional. The authors describe the case of a patient operated for renal cancer in whom histological examination revealed associated renal tuberculosis.
