BACKGROUND: On 20 September 2022, Uganda declared its fifth Sudan virus disease (SVD) outbreak, culminating in 142 confirmed and 22 probable cases. The reproductive rate (R) of this outbreak was 1.25. We described persons who were exposed to the virus, became infected, and they led to the infection of an unusually high number of cases during the outbreak.
METHODS: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, we defined a super-spreader person (SSP) as any person with real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) confirmed SVD linked to the infection of ≥ 13 other persons (10-fold the outbreak R)

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a leading transfusion associated infectious risk in endemic areas. However, the prevalence of malaria parasitemia has not been well characterized in blood donor populations. This study sought to determine the prevalence of Plasmodium in red blood cell (RBC) and whole blood (WB) units after the rainy season in Uganda.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between May and July 2018, blood was collected from the sample diversion pouch of 1000 WB donors in Kampala and Jinja, Uganda. The RBC pellet from ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) anticoagulated blood was stored at -80°C u

In April 2016, a yellow fever outbreak was detected in Uganda. Removal of contaminating ribosomal RNA in a clinical sample improved the sensitivity of next-generation sequencing. Molecular analyses determined the Uganda yellow fever outbreak was distinct from the concurrent yellow fever outbreak in Angola, improving our understanding of yellow fever epidemiology.

Malaria is the fifth infection leading to death in the world. Plasmodium species is the malarial parasite that infects human cells. The five species of the human Plasmodium parasites are P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, P. malariae and P. knowlesi. Recently, the World Health Organization reported that Uganda has the world's highest malaria incidence, with a rate of 478 cases per 1000 population per year. In this article, a patient who had specific clinical signs and symptoms of malaria after work-related travel to Uganda has been evaluated. The major clinical findings of the patient were chi

The Kampala cancer registry was established in 1954 as a population-based cancer registry, and registration of cases is done by active methods. The registry contributed data on survival for 15 cancer sites or types registered in 1993-1997. For Kaposi sarcoma, only a random sample of the total incident cases was provided for survival study. Follow-up has been carried out predominantly by active methods, with median follow-up ranging from 4-26 months. The proportion with histologically verified diagnosis for various cancers ranged between 36-83%; death certificate only (DCO) cases were negligibl

Between 1976 and 1983 in the Busoga Region in Uganda 10,414 male and 9,560 female patients were detected with trypanosomiasis. Prior to the onset of the epidemic, Glossina f. fuscipes, the sole vector, had broken through the tsetse control barrier and had spread to cover most of the region. The fly was further observed to be resting in Lantana plants and coffee and banana plantations which are widespread in the area. A close and regular contact was thus established between man and fly. It was observed that the young and engergetic persons first became infected, but as the epidemic unfolded the

BACKGROUND: The control of poliomyelitis in Uganda dates back as far as 1950 and acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance has since been used as a criterion for identifying wild polioviruses. Poliovirus isolation was initially pursued through collaborative research however, in 1993, the Expanded Program on Immunization Laboratory (EPI-LAB) was established as a member of the Global Poliovirus Laboratory Network (GPLN) and spearheaded this activity at Uganda Virus Research Institute.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this report is to document the progress and impact of the EPI-LAB on poliovirus eradica

Elimination of sleeping sickness from endemic countries like Uganda is key if the affected communities are to exploit the potential of the available human and livestock resources (production and productivity). Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, the parasite that causes acute sleeping sickness in humans, is transmitted by tsetse flies and co-exists in non-human animal reservoirs. Uganda by Act of Parliament in 1992 decided to handle the complex approach to control of sleeping sickness and animal trypanosomiasis by establishing the Uganda Trypanosomiasis Control Council (UTCC) and its secretariat t

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are the principal tool for malaria control in Africa and are presently treated with a single class of insecticide; however, increasing levels of insecticide resistance threaten their success. In response to this threat nets have been developed that incorporate the synergist, piperonyl butoxide (PBO), which inhibits the activity of cytochrome P450s which is one main mechanisms of insecticide resistance, allowing resistance to pyrethroids to be reversed. However, data on the value and cost effectiveness of these nets is lacking. A large-scale cl

BACKGROUND: Over the past few decades, cholera has remained a global public health challenge, with Africa bearing a disproportionate share of its burden. Uganda has experienced a notable decline in the incidence of cholera over the past decade, largely attributed to intensified public health efforts, including oral cholera vaccination (OCV) campaigns, strengthened surveillance, and targeted WASH interventions. This study seeks to provide information on spatial clustering patterns of cholera incidence and evaluate how these patterns varied across selected outbreak years. METHODS: District-level

Keloids are benign yet persistent fibroproliferative disorders characterized by raised, irregular scars that extend beyond the original wound margins. In addition to causing disfiguring scars, pain, and restricted mobility, keloids significantly impact psychosocial well-being, often leading to emotional distress and socioeconomic challenges for the affected individuals. Although keloids are recognized as being most prevalent among individuals of African descent, there remains a paucity of epidemiological data on their prevalence in African populations. This gap in knowledge has contributed to

BACKGROUND: In 2015, Uganda joined the Global Financing Facility (GFF), a Global Health Initiative for Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH). Similar initiatives have been found to be powerful entities influencing national policy and priorities in Uganda, but few independent studies have assessed the GFF.
OBJECTIVE: To understand the policy process and contextual factors in Uganda that influenced the content of the GFF policy documents (Investment Case and Project Appraisal).
METHODS: We conducted a qualitative policy analysis. The data collection included a

OBJECTIVES: In this study, we investigated the causes of measles-like illnesses (MLI) in the Uganda national surveillance program in order to inform diagnostic assay selection and vaccination strategies.
METHODS: We used metagenomic next-generation sequencing (M-NGS) on the Illumina platform to identify viruses associated with MLI (defined as fever and rash in the presence of either cough, coryza or conjunctivitis) in patient samples that had tested IgM negative for measles between 2010 and 2019.
RESULTS: Viral genomes were identified in 87/271 (32%) of samples, of which 44/271 (16%) contain

BACKGROUND: Systematic infrastructure and regulatory weaknesses over many decades, in communities struggling with animal African trypanosomiasis (AAT) would be expected to create an environment that would promote drug misuse and risk development of drug resistance. Here, we explore rural community practices of livestock keepers, livestock extension officers and drug shop attendants to determine whether appropriate practice was being followed in administration of trypanocides and other drugs.
METHODS: A questionnaire-based survey was undertaken in southwestern Uganda in 2022 involving 451 farm
