Medical records of 68 horses with urolithiasis were examined. Calculi were in the bladder in 47 horses, urethra in 11 horses, kidneys in 15 horses, and ureter in two horses. They occurred at several sites in six horses. Common clinical signs included hematuria, altered micturition (pollakiuria, dysuria, urinary incontinence), and tenesmus. Weight loss, possibly attributable to chronic renal failure and colic, was associated more commonly with renal and ureteral calculi. Weight loss also occurred in 13% of horses with cystic calculi only. In male horses, most cystic calculi were removed by peri

Spinal cord injury (SCI) may lead to urinary system disturbances. Patients with SCI usually have neurogenic bladder, and treatment optionss for this condition include clean intermittent catheterization and a permanent indwelling urethral or suprapubic catheter. Complications of catheterization include urinary tract infection, calculi, urinary tract injury, bladder contraction, bladder spasm, renal dysfunction, bladder cancer, and so forth. To the best of our knowledge, ureteral rupture is an unusual complication of catheterization, and ureteral rupture has been rarely reported in SCI patients.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic literature review on urethral calculi in a contemporary cohort describing etiology, investigation, and management patterns.
METHODS: A systematic search of MEDLINE and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) databases was performed. Articles, including case reports and case series on urethral calculi published between January 2000 and December 2019, were included. Full-text manuscripts were reviewed for clinical parameters including symptomatology, etiology, medical history, investigations, treatment, and outcomes. Data were collated and ana

Nephrogenic adenoma is a rare metaplastic benign lesion of urothelium in response to genitourinary tract procedures, chronic infection, trauma, urinary calculi and immunosuppressive therapy after renal transplantation. It has been reported to occur throughout the urinary tract especially, in the urinary bladder. We report a case of nephrogenic adenoma arising from the lower end of the right ureter with clinical and radiological features suspicious of carcinoma.

In the area of Rügen-Stralsund a maximum value of urolithiasis and cholelithiasis was found. In 27,133 autopsies the frequency of urolithiasis was 6%. Obesity, hypertension and diabetes mellitus may increase the tendency of cholelithiasis patients to develop additional urolithiasis. Ureteral and urinary bladder calculi are more frequently among male patients. In cases with benign prostatic hyperplasia the incidence of urolithiasis was not higher than in female patients. In the autopsy material multiple calculi and bilateral cases occur more frequently. Hypertension and increased heart weight d…

To assess the impact of the use of plain X-ray films and ultrasound examinations on clinical decision-making in patients referred with symptoms of bladder outflow obstruction. Patients with symptoms of bladder outflow obstruction were recruited prospectively. After clinical assessment they underwent standard investigations of plain X-ray of the kidneys, ureters and bladder, and upper and lower urinary tract ultrasound. A management decision was made on the basis of all results. These decisions were then reviewed with specific reference to radiological findings to assess the role of imaging in

Although routine screening for bladder cancer is not recommended, microscopic hematuria is often incidentally discovered by primary care physicians. The American Urological Association has published an updated guideline for the management of asymptomatic microscopic hematuria, which is defined as the presence of three or more red blood cells per high-power field visible in a properly collected urine specimen without evidence of infection. The most common causes of microscopic hematuria are urinary tract infection, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and urinary calculi. However, up to 5% of patients

A wide range of abnormalities in the genito-urinary system predispose to infection and surgical solutions may be appropriate. This review considers the investigation of obstruction and the relationship between urinary infections and renal damage, chronic renal disease, renal abscesses, reflux, calculi, catheterization and instrumentation, the neuropathic bladder and prostatitis as well as the role of antibiotic prophylaxis in urological surgery. Recommendations for the urosurgical management of urinary infection are made.

INTRODUCTION: Plain x-rays and contrast urography are important for diagnosing urinary tract diseases. The first plain film of the urinary tract was made in 1896, and the first tests using contrasts started in 1904. Excretory urography has been used since 1930.
PLAIN FILM OF THE URINARY TRACT: Plain films of the urinary tract are used in the kidney area, the area of the ureter and urinary bladder. They also show structures (lumbar and sacral spine and pelvis), muscles (m. iliopsoas) as well as calculi.
EXCRETORY UROGRAPHY: X-ray visualization of the urinary tract with contrast substances is

X-ray diffraction crystallography was used to determine the crystalline composition of 18 equine urinary calculi, including stones originating in the kidney, bladder and urethra. Calcium carbonate in the form of calcite was found to be the major component in all calculi examined. Other components commonly found included weddellite and substituted vaterite. Urine deposits from a number of normal horses were also examined. The significance of these findings, as well as those from a number of previous reports, are discussed in relation to the possible aetiology of urolithiasis in the horse.

The occurrence of bladder calculi in women is uncommon, and the evaluation of bladder stone in women with any history of previous pelvic surgery demands careful attention. Bladder erosion due to previous anti-incontinence surgery formed the nidus for stone formation, and often presented as recurrent cystitis or refractory urinary incontinence since the early postoperative period. We hereby report a rarely delayed appearance of the symptomatic iatrogenic bladder stone occurring 10 years after previous tension-free vaginal tape procedure.

Experiments are described demonstrating that experimental insemination with autologous or homologous sperm into the ventral prostate or bladder neck of outbred Zbar male rats induces intravesical precipitation or stones. These observations suggest that clinical conditions resulting in intravesical sperm may be contributory to bladder lithiasis in man and may have relevance to its prevalence in men vs. women.

Seven patients were treated by the Schlegel-Mobley version of the vesicostomy. Six had neurogenic bladder and one an inoperable carcinoma of the urethra. There were no immediate complications. Urine collection from the stoma functioned satisfactorily, but stenosis of the stoma developed in three patients. The upper urinary tract was improved except in one debilitated patient, who had renal calculi already at the time of operation. Dilatation of the bladder remnant is a problem. Urinary infection was not positively influenced. It is concluded, that the operation is not ideal, but provided the p

BACKGROUND: Urachal calculi are uncommon complications of urachal remnants. Their clinical and radiological appearances overlap with bladder calculi, vesicourachal diverticula, infected urachal cysts, and calcified urachal tumors, creating a potential diagnostic pitfall.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 54-year-old man presented with intermittent lower abdominal pain lasting more than six months without hematuria, dysuria, umbilical discharge, fever, or other lower urinary tract symptoms. Cystoscopy at a local hospital showed bladder inflammation but no stone. In our hospital, computed tomography demonstr

Of all primary bladder cancers, primary adenocarcinoma is an uncommon tumor. When considering all tumor origin areas, secondary bladder involvement from carcinoma, whether by direct extension or metastasis, is actually more prevalent than primary adenocarcinoma, despite its rarity. The most common source of subsequent bladder tumors is endometrial, lung, colon, prostate, breast, or other organ adenocarcinomas. Primary bladder adenocarcinoma is thought to result from urothelial metaplasia, which is frequently linked to persistent irritation or inflammation. Bladder exstrophy, recurrent urinary

Objective: To explore the characteristics, prevention and treatment strategies of lower urinary tract injury in transvaginal reconstructive pelvic surgery (vRPS). Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 24 patients who suffered lower urinary tract injuries occuring in vRPS from January 2005 to June 2021, among which 4 cases were referred to our hospital from other hospitals. Results: (1) In our hospital, 1 952 patients underwent vRPS for anterior and (or) middle pelvic organ prolapse during that study period, with a 1.0% (20/1 952) incidence of lower urinary tract injuries occurring

Urinary retention in young children and infancy is relatively rare. The commonest malignancy cause of bladder outlet obstruction in infancy is prostatic rhabdomyosarcoma; the commonest cause of congenital bladder outlet obstruction in a male infantis posterior urethral valve and the commonest cause of urethral obstruction in male children is urethral calculi. We present here a report on three cases of urethral obstruction in male children.
