Learning from label proportions in brain-computer interfaces: Online unsupervised learning with guarantees.

OBJECTIVE: Using traditional approaches, a brain-computer interface (BCI) requires the collection of calibration data for new subjects prior to online use. Calibration time can be reduced or eliminated e.g., by subject-to-subject transfer of a pre-trained classifier or unsupervised adaptive classification methods which learn from scratch and adapt over time. While such heuristics work well in practice, none of them can provide theoretical guarantees. Our objective is to modify an event-related potential (ERP) paradigm to work in unison with the machine learning decoder, and thus to achieve a r

[Brain-computer interfaces, Locked-In syndrome, and disorders of consciousness].

Detecting signs of consciousness in patients with severe brain injury constitutes a real challenge for clinicians. The current gold standard in clinical diagnosis is the behavioral scale relying on motor abilities, which are often impaired or nonexistent in these patients. In this context, brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) could offer a potential complementary tool to detect signs of consciousness whilst bypassing the usual motor pathway. In addition to complementing behavioral assessments and potentially reducing error rate, BCIs could also serve as a communication tool for paralyzed but consc

HoloBio: A holographic microscopy tool for quantitative biological analysis.

Holographic imaging in microscopy enables label-free quantitative information of biological specimens and has found applications across a wide range of biomedical studies, from cell morphology to particle dynamics; yet its widespread adoption is often limited by the lack of accessible and standardized analysis software. We present HoloBio, an open-source, Python-based graphical user interface developed to address this issue. This software offers two primary operational modes: a Real-Time mode that enables live processing of holograms at video frame rates, and an Offline mode designed for post-

Performance and usability testing of an automated tool for detection of peripheral artery disease using electronic health records.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a common cardiovascular disorder that is frequently underdiagnosed, which can lead to poorer outcomes due to lower rates of medical optimization. We aimed to develop an automated tool to identify undiagnosed PAD and evaluate physician acceptance of a dashboard representation of risk assessment. Data were derived from electronic health records (EHR). We developed and compared traditional risk score models to novel machine learning models. For usability testing, primary and specialty care physicians were recruited and interviewed until thematic saturation. Data

Chat Modeling: Interaction-Enhanced Agent Framework for Visualizing Literature-Grounded Biological Structures.

Bioscientists frequently seek to visualize the biological systems they have empirically characterized and reported in the literature. Realizing such visualizations requires biological structure modeling, an inherently complex process that demands both biological and geometric understanding. This paper addresses the problem of constructing such 3D models for visualization. In this paper, we introduce a novel agent framework that mitigates the challenges of operating 3D modeling software by transforming user inputs, including natural language descriptions, research publication content, and textu

SAMJ: fast image annotation on ImageJ/Fiji via segment anything model.

Accurate image annotation is essential for training artificial intelligence (AI) systems in biomedical image analysis, enabling tasks such as cell detection, tissue quantification, and disease characterization. However, creating pixel-level annotations is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process that requires expert input, limiting the development and adoption of AI methods. Recent advances in foundation models, such as the Segment Anything Model (SAM), enable interactive object segmentation from simple user prompts, but their integration into widely used bioimage analysis platforms remain

Assessing Mode-Switching Strategies for Assistive Robotic Manipulators Using a Preliminary Version of the Novel Non-invasive Tongue-Computer Interface.

The inductive tongue-computer interface allows individuals with tetraplegia to control assistive devices. However, controlling assistive robotic arms often requires more than 14 different commands, which cannot always fit into a single control layout. Previous studies have separated the commands into modes, but few have investigated strategies to switch between them. In this feasibility study, we compare the efficiency of switching modes using buttons, swipe gestures and double taps using a preliminary version of a new non-invasive mouthpiece unit (nMPU), which includes an integrated activatio

Segmentation of distal airways using structural analysis.

Segmentation of airways in Computed Tomography (CT) scans is a must for accurate support of diagnosis and intervention of many pulmonary disorders. In particular, lung cancer diagnosis would benefit from segmentations reaching most distal airways. We present a method that combines descriptors of bronchi local appearance and graph global structural analysis to fine-tune thresholds on the descriptors adapted for each bronchial level. We have compared our method to the top performers of the EXACT09 challenge and to a commercial software for biopsy planning evaluated in an own-collected data-base

Enhancing Long-Term Motivation of Cardiac Patients by Applying Exergaming in Rehabilitation Training.

Although regular physical activities reduce mortality and increase quality of life many cardiac patients discontinue training due to lack of motivation, lack of time or having health concerns because of a too high training intensity. Therefore, we developed an exergaming based system to enhance long-term motivation in the context of rehabilitation training. We combined different hardware components such as vital sensors, a virtual reality headset, a motion detecting camera, a bicycle ergometer and a motion platform to create an immersive and fun experience for the training user without having

MegaMiner: A Tool for Lead Identification Through Text Mining Using Chemoinformatics Tools and Cloud Computing Environment.

Virtual screening is an indispensable tool to cope with the massive amount of data being tossed by the high throughput omics technologies. With the objective of enhancing the automation capability of virtual screening process a robust portal termed MegaMiner has been built using the cloud computing platform wherein the user submits a text query and directly accesses the proposed lead molecules along with their drug-like, lead-like and docking scores. Textual chemical structural data representation is fraught with ambiguity in the absence of a global identifier. We have used a combination of st

Neuroscience, virtual reality and neurorehabilitation: brain repair as a validation of brain theory.

This paper argues that basing cybertherapy approaches on a theoretical understanding of the brain has advantages. On one hand it provides for a rational approach towards therapy design while on the other allowing for a direct validation of brain theory in the clinic. As an example this paper discusses how the Distributed Adaptive Control architecture, a theory of mind, brain and action, has given rise to a new paradigm in neurorehabilitation called the Rehabilitation Gaming System (RGS) and to novel neuroprosthetic systems. The neuroprosthetic system considered is developed to replace the func

[Navigation surgery and fracture treatment].

During operative fracture treatment the surgeon depends on fluoroscopic or X-ray radiological images as well as CT scans or MRI scans. This means that the surgeon sees only images at a given moment. Continuous imaging is technically complex and is accompanied by considerable exposure to radiation. Between images the surgeon has to depend on his or her knowledge of anatomical relationships and three-dimensional orientation. This may lead to the incorrect positioning of implants with ensuing morbidity and sometimes even death. Throughout the surgical procedure, computer assisted surgery (CAS) in

Comparative Evaluation of Desktop, Room-Scale, and Large-Space Co-Located Collaborative Virtual Reality in Immersive Training.

Large-space co-located collaborative virtual reality provides a training environment in which participants can move, communicate, and coordinate actions within a shared immersive space. However, evidence remains limited on whether this configuration improves spatial presence, team coordination, and learning engagement beyond desktop-based collaboration or distributed room-scale virtual reality. This study evaluated a single-center, three-arm experimental protocol involving 126 participants assigned to 42 three-person teams. Teams were randomized to desktop collaborative simulation, room-scale

SORI: A softness-rendering interface to unravel the nature of softness perception.

Tactile perception of softness serves a critical role in the survival, well-being, and social interaction among various species, including humans. This perception informs activities from food selection in animals to medical palpation for disease detection in humans. Despite its fundamental importance, a comprehensive understanding of how softness is neurologically and cognitively processed remains elusive. Previous research has demonstrated that the somatosensory system leverages both cutaneous and kinesthetic cues for the sensation of softness. Factors such as contact area, depth, and force p
