A Diagnostic Study Using STARD Platform on Liquid-Based Cytology in Cervical Smear and Its Positivity Rate among Females with Abnormal Vaginal Conditions Attending a Tertiary Care Center.

BACKGROUND: Liquid-based cytology (LBC) is a newer method of preparing cervical cell samples. This technique involves collecting cells in a liquid fixative and preparing and evaluating them. AIM: This study aims to investigate cervical smears prepared using the Ezi-Prep LBC method and analyze the positivity rate for cervical cancer and assess the diagnostic accuracy of LBC in detecting cervical abnormalities among females with abnormal vaginal conditions attending a tertiary care center. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present diagnostic study was performed in a tertiary care hospital over a peri

Value of Papanicolaou-stained smears in the diagnosis of trichomoniasis, candidiasis, and cervical herpes simplex virus infection in women.

In the diagnosis of trichomoniasis Papanicolaou-stained cervical smears gave marginally better results than cultures of vaginal secretion; stained cervical smears and wet films of vaginal material gave similar results. Culture of vaginal secretion on Sabouraud's medium gave the best results in the diagnosis of candidiasis; Papanicolaou-stained smears gave significantly fewer positive results than either cultures or Gram-stained vaginal smears. Papanicolaou-stained smears were reported as positive in only two of five patients with cervical herpes simplex virus infection. It is concluded that Pa…

Mucosal cytology in the determination of the pubertal status in girls.

AIM: To assess and validate the diagnostic value of buccal and vaginal smears in the ambulatory care of girls with potential disorders of puberty. METHODS: Smears were obtained from 77 girls who presented for assessment of their pubertal status, stained as described by Papanicolaou, examined for signs of estrogenization according to the method of Schmitt, and compared with the clinical status. RESULTS: Vaginal but not buccal smears reflect accurately the changes of sexual maturation, even more sensitive than single serum hormone measurements. CONCLUSIONS: Vaginal smears represent a valid, r…

Comparisons between direct microscopic and cultural methods for recognition of Corynebacterium vaginale in women with vaginitis.

The frequency with which clue cells could be detected in Gram-stained vaginal smears and/or cervical Papanicolaou (Pap) smears was compared with the frequency of Corynebacterium vaginale (Haemophilus vaginalis) isolation in a group of 236 female patients, of whom 221 had vaginitis. Vaginal clue cells were found most often in women from whom C. vaginale was isolated (P = 0.00006) whereas, conversely, clue cells in cervical Pap smears were reported more frequently in women with negative cultures for this organism (P = 0.006). C. vaginale isolations were made more frequently from women with both …

The forensic value of the immunohistochemical detection of oestrogen receptors in vaginal epithelium.

This study investigated whether oestrogen receptors can be immunohistochemically detected in paraffin-embedded vaginal mucosa samples using monoclonal antibodies and whether the method would be suitable for the identification of vaginal cells in cytological smears. Samples of vaginal mucosa were obtained from living females and female corpses, as vaginal smears. For comparison purposes, resected prepuce samples and samples of postmortem male urethral mucosa were also investigated. Nuclear oestrogen receptors could be regularly detected in the basal, parabasal and deeper intermediate epithelium…

Comparison of four techniques for the routine diagnosis of Trichomonas vaginalis infection.

Specimens from 495 patients attending Johannesburg hospitals and family planning clinics were examined for Trichomonas vaginalis by microscopy of Giemsa (GS), Papanicolaou (PAP), and acridine-orange (AO) stained smears, and by culture in Feinberg-Whittington medium. Culture, Pap and GS stained smears from vaginal swabs yielded fewer positives than AO stained smears. Although Pap-stained cytological smears gave the highest number of positives, in 30% of these cases the presence of T.vaginalis could not be confirmed by examination of vaginal swabs. Of the positive AO-stained smears, 93% were als

Presence of tumor cells in the vagina during surgical treatment could be the source of vaginal recurrence in patients with endometrial carcinoma - A pilot prospective study.

BACKGROUND: The commonest site of recurrence in endometrial cancer (EC) is the vagina, with a rate of 16%. The aim of this study was to determine if vaginal recurrences in EC patients could develop due to contamination of the vagina with glandular tumor cells dropping off on polypoid, large size EC or tumors involving the endocervix, through manipulation of the uterus during surgery. METHODS: This pilot prospective study included 10 consecutive patients with EC, surgically treated with hysterectomy and additional lymphadenectomy according to stage. In every case, 2 proximal vaginal smears wer…

Vaginal cytology in endocrinopathies.

In order to evaluate the diagnostic significance of vaginal smears in endocrinopathies associated with menstrual disorders, the cytologic pattern of vaginal smears was examined in 703 patients who had a well-established diagnosis of the disorder's origin. The patients were classified into four groups according to their menstrual disorders: primary amenorrhea (159 patients), secondary amenorrhea (116 patients), primary oligomenorrhea (214 patients) and secondary oligomenorrhea (214 patients). Using the maturation index and the maturation value, three cytologic patterns of vaginal smears were di…

Vaginal cytology in the queen: clinical and cytological correlations.

ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to characterise vaginal cytological patterns and standardise its interpretation in female cats. Vaginal cytology has a broadly recognised value for oestrous cycle staging because of the responsiveness of the vaginal epithelium to oestrogens causing changes in the cellular pattern. Unlike the bitch, vaginal cytology is not routinely used in queens.MethodsA total of 39 vaginal smears were collected from 31 intact queens using a simple and quick procedure with little, if any, physical restraint, analysed for cellularity, clearing, epithelial cell types and the …

Pericardial Tuberculoma: Transition from Asymptomatic Pericardial Effusion to Pericardial Mass.

OBJECTIVE: Human papillomavirus (HPV) testing is widely incorporated into cervical cancer screening strategies. Current screening requires pelvic examination for cervical sampling, which may compromise participation. The acceptance could be raised by introducing testing on vaginal swabs. We explored the interchangeability of vaginal swabs and cervical smears for HPV testing, by means of a prospective study conducted in female sex workers (FSWs). Besides, we report on the occurrence of 32 different HPV genotypes in FSW with low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) or high-grade squamous

[Blastomycoid flora of the urogenital tract in nonpregnant and pregnant patients].

Vaginal and vulva smears and urine obtained by catheters from 232 pregnant and 251 non-pregnant women were examined for the growth of yeasts. These fungi could be grown from the vulvo-vaginal smears from 26,7% of the pregnant women. Yeasts were found in 6,4% of the urine samples. In the case of non-pregnant women, fungi were found in 19,9% of the vulvo-vaginal smears, whereas 3,2% of the urine samples contained yeasts. The growth of yeasts was encouraged by the addition of various urine dilutions using to a nutrient solution containing Candida albicans of Torulopsis glabrata the urine obtained…

Methodological Factors Affecting Canine Vaginal Cytology: The Influence of Sampling Site, Swab Condition, and Fixation Method.

BACKGROUND: Vaginal cytology is widely used for cycle staging in bitches because of its practicality and low cost; however, its diagnostic r … sal cells (p = 0.0078) and anuclear superficial cells (p < 0.0001) were more frequently observed in vaginal smears. Overall, sampling location significantly affected the distinction between proestrus and estrus. Swab condition significantly influenced smear quality and cellular presentation but had minimal impact on cycle stage classification. Smears obtained us …

Cytologic findings in rectovaginal fistulae.

This study was designed to evaluate the cytologic components in vaginal smears from women with rectovaginal fistulae and consisted of smears from 23 women. The etiology of the fistulae was complications of irradiation (14 cases), neoplasms (7 cases) and pelvic abscess or inflammation (2 cases). Thirteen cases (15 smears) contained benign colonic cells compatible with rectovaginal fistulae; 10 cases (17 smears) did not. Fecal material was present in 7 cases, 5 of which also contained colonic glandular cells. Changes of irradiation were noted in 2 cases and reparative changes in 2 others. In the…

Reproductive functional anatomy and oestrous cycle pattern of the female brush-tailed porcupine (Atherurus africanus, Gray 1842) from Gabon.

In the present study, we examined certain features of the functional anatomy of the female genital tract of the wild brush-tailed porcupine (Atherurus africanus) to obtain data on the reproductive biology of this African forest rodent. Two consecutive experiments were performed. The aim of the first was to establish macroscopic and microscopic features of the genital organs, and to explore correlations between predominant ovarian structures and vaginal contents in 20 wild, mature females. In the second experiment, we inspected the external genitalia and vaginal smears of a further 10 females i…

[Cholesterol in serum and vaginal content in healthy, non-pregnant women].

We examined 97 healthy and non-pregnant women aged between 17 and 58 years, who especially did not show any symptoms of vulvitis or colpitis, for the contents of cholesterol in serum and vaginal smear. In the vaginal smear we found significantly lower concentrations of total cholesterol as in serum, whereas the part of free cholesterol on total cholesterol in vaginal smear was triple than in serum and its absolutely concentration was double than that in serum. Possible reasons are discussed.
