Vestibulogenic imbalance.

Vestibular lesions may cause imbalance that long outlasts vertigo. Photographic analysis in five cases showed defects not only of the tilting reactions, which are of labyrinthine origin, but also of certain other postural reactions, notably the counterpoising and protective stepping reactions. All of these reflexes are unconscious and consequently such patients are rendered unstable in several ways simultaneously and may have difficulty describing their symptoms.

Vestibular disease, and its relationship to facial paralysis in the horse: a clinical study of 7 cases.

The signs observed in 6 cases of peripheral vestibular disease included incoordination, head tilt and nystagmus. The intensity of the signs varied greatly with duration of the disease, and in 3 cases facial paralysis was also present. Tympanosclerosis was demonstrable in all cases subject to radiology. Trauma was the causative factor in most cases. The causes of, and relationships between, vestibular dysfunction and concomitant facial paralysis are discussed. The exact etiology of the tympanosclerosis is unknown.

Induction of Extremely Severe Nausea via Vestibular Activation on a 7 Tesla MRI Scanner.

Extremely severe nausea was experienced by four subjects positioned prone on a 7T scanner table with their arm extended overhead for a wrist examination and their head positioned approximately 10-20 cm above the magnet's central axis. Movement through the large static and spatial field gradients of current 7T MRI scanner magnets typically causes mild vestibular activation which is well tolerated by most individuals. However, when positioned off-axis, the head moves through regions of even larger and more rapidly changing magnetic fields which in the current study were sufficient to induce the

[Efficacy of non-drug methods of treatment of vestibular dysfunction in elderly patients with vestibular migraine.].

The purpose of the study was to compare the effectiveness of non-drug treatment methods (vestibular rehabilitation, ketogenic diet) for leveling vestibular dysfunction in elderly patients with vestibular migraine. The study included elderly patients with vestibular migraine. In the first group (28 patients), vestibular gymnastics was used to correct vestibular dysfunction, in the second group (28 patients), a ketogenic diet served as a non-pharmacological method of exposure and a control group (28 patients) who did not receive non-drug correction measures. The study showed that vestibular gymn

Pathway of care for visual and vestibular rehabilitation after mild traumatic brain injury: a critical review.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: To review the pathway to care for treatment and management of patients receiving visual and vestibular rehabilitation after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). METHODS & PROCEDURES: English scientific peer-reviewed articles from PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and PsycINFO between 2000 and 2020 were first screened by title and abstract, then those selected underwent full-text review and analysis. MAIN OUTCOMES & RESULTS: The database search yielded 1640 results and after title and abstract review, 75 articles were selected for full-text screening, from which 8 were included in the

Fluctuations in Vestibular Afferent Excitability in Menière's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if Menière's disease is associated with fluctuations in afferent excitability in four human subjects previously implanted with vestibular stimulators. STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal repeated measures. SETTING: Tertiary referral center, human vestibular research laboratory. PATIENTS: Four human subjects with previously uncontrolled Menière's disease unilaterally implanted in each semicircular canal with a vestibular stimulator. One subject had only two canals implanted. INTERVENTION(S): Repeated measures of electrically-evoked slow phase eye velocity and vestibular elect

Vertigo and the processing of vestibular information: A review in the context of predictive coding.

This article investigates the processing of vestibular information by interpreting current experimental knowledge in the framework of predictive coding. We demonstrate that this theoretical framework give us insights into several important questions regarding specific properties of the vestibular system. Particularly, we discuss why the vestibular network is more spatially distributed than other sensory networks, why a mismatch in the vestibular system is more clinically disturbing than in other sensory systems, why the vestibular system is only marginally affected by most cerebral lesions, an

Meniere's disease: histopathology, cytochemistry, and imaging.

Meniere's disease is a poorly understood, disabling syndrome causing spells of vertigo, hearing fluctuation, tinnitus, and aural fullness. In this paper, we present a review of the histopathology, cytochemistry, and imaging of Meniere's disease. Histopathology is significant for neuroepithelial damage with hair cell loss, basement membrane thickening, and perivascular microvascular damage. Cytochemical alterations are significant for altered AQP4 and AQP6 expression in the supporting cell, and altered cochlin and mitochondrial protein expression. Current developments include imaging techniques

Antivertigo medications and drug-induced vertigo. A pharmacological review.

The approach to drug treatment of vertigo is almost exclusively symptomatic. There are 3 major goals for drug treatment of vertigo. The first one is to eliminate the hallucination of motion. Drugs with vestibular 'suppressant' properties are used for this purpose. The major vestibular suppressants are anticholinergic and antihistamine drugs. The second goal is to reduce the accompanying neurovegetative and psychoaffective signs (nausea, vomiting, anxiety). Antidopaminergics are used for this purpose. The third goal is to enhance the process of 'vestibular compensation' to allow the brain to fi

Selective chemical vestibulectomy: preliminary results with human application.

The involved membranous labyrinth of patients with medically intractable Meniere's disease is being accessed by means of a fenestration of the bony horizontal semicircular canal in preparation for the application of a 125 or 250 mcg flake of solid streptomycin. Sensory information originating in the affected vestibular end organ is selectively blocked from reaching the central nervous system. This uniformly results in the rapid elimination of vertiginous symptoms, and at these calculated doses yields preservation of (or in some cases improvement in) preoperative cochlear thresholds. The ration
