Experimental animals and in vitro systems in the study of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus.

The history of lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) research is reviewed from the point of view of whether the main discoveries concerning LCM pathogenesis have stemmed from animal or in vitro research methods. Most of the results initially stemmed from animal experiments, but in recent years recourse has increasingly been made to in vitro techniques to confirm and amplify the animal-based conclusions.Different research approaches are discussed and an attempt is made to assess the role of in vitro versus animal methods in obtaining knowledge on this virus. The same analysis is applied to the fut

The influence of cultivation parameters on the reproduction of recombinant influenza viruses expressing immunodominant proteins of Mycobacterium bovis.

INTRODUCTION: Influenza A virus is considered a promising vector platform for the creation of recombinant vaccines due to its high immunogenicity and ability to induce a pronounced humoral and cellular immune response. The aim of the study is to investigate the optimal cultivation parameters for recombinant influenza A virus strains expressing Mycobacterium bovis ESAT-6 and TB10.4 antigens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cultivation conditions for recombinant influenza viruses A/Ast/PR8-NS124-ESAT6 and A/Ast/PR8-NS124-TB10.4, expressing the ESAT6 and TB10.4 proteins of M. bovis, were optimized. The v

Increased Human Incidence of West Nile Virus Disease near Rice Fields in California but Not in Southern United States.

Anthropogenic land use change, including agriculture, can alter mosquito larval habitat quality, increase mosquito abundance, and increase incidence of vector-borne disease. Rice is a staple food crop for more than half of the world's population, with ∼1% of global production occurring within the United States (US). Flooded rice fields provide enormous areas of larval habitat for mosquito species and may be hotspots for mosquito-borne pathogens, including West Nile virus (WNV). West Nile virus was introduced into the Americas in 1999 and causes yearly epidemics in the US with an average of app

Viroid ecology in hops (Humulus lupulus L.): high prevalence in commercial systems but low presence in wild populations.

INTRODUCTION: Hop (Humulus lupulus L.), a vital crop in the brewing industry, is increasingly threatened by infections caused by viroids and viruses. The extensive use of vegetative propagation in hop cultivation facilitates the accumulation and dissemination of these pathogens. However, little is known about their prevalence and ecological behavior in non-commercial settings. This study provides a comprehensive overview of viroid and virus infections across Germany, with particular attention to their occurrence and potential transmission across commercial, settlement, and wild hop populations
