PURPOSE: To compare the binocular vision and oculomotor function between sports-concussed athletes and aged-matched controls.
METHODS: Thirty mild concussed athletes were recruited and compared with aged-matched controls. All the participants underwent a comprehensive ocular assessment followed by an oculomotor assessment which included tests for accommodation, vergence, eye movements, and reading parameters.
RESULTS: Three categories of oculomotor-based deficits were found: convergence insufficiency (40%), accommodative insufficiency (25%), and oculomotor-based reading dysfunctions (20%). A

In this study 35 patients with monocular traumatic aphakia were enrolled to document the degree of binocular vision gained by optical correction with contact lenses. The most important factors in achieving binocular vision were the interval between formation of the traumatic cataract and surgery and between the operation and starting wearing contact lenses. There was a statistically significant correlation between these two intervals and the achievement of near stereopsis and normal visual acuity.

PURPOSE: To answer this important outcome question.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Retrospective review of a series of 60 qualified cases of congenital/infantile esotropia surgically binocularly "aligned" (= orthotropia +/- 8 PD) before 30 months of age and showing at one postoperative examination date at least some degree of (subnormal) binocular vision. Every patient was monitored over a very long postoperative followup period (mean 14.7 +/- 3.7 years).
RESULTS: Early binocular alignment with some binocular cooperation does not guarantee a stable outcome. However, even though the final percentage o

PURPOSE: The purpose of this research is to study the vision development in monocular individuals so as to better understand normal binocular vision development and to refine the treatment of infants with infantile esotropia.
METHODS: Thirty-six subjects with one clinically normal eye and one eye with no vision (no light perception or history of enucleation) are studied. In addition to measurement of standard parameters of development such as visual acuity, measurement of motion processing is made by both optokinetic and electrophysiologic techniques. A comparison is made of vision developmen

PURPOSE: Infantile strabismus impedes the development of stereopsis. In optically strabismic monkeys, 2 continuous hours of normal binocular vision per day has been shown to preserve near-normal stereopsis. In this study, we investigated whether, as in learning, multiple shorter periods of intervention would further boost performance.
METHODS: To simulate infantile esotropia, infant monkeys were reared with 30 prism diopters base-in starting at 4 weeks of age. Daily periods of normal binocular vision were provided by replacing prisms with plano lenses. Altogether, 14 monkeys were prism reared

Presbyopes can choose today among different corrections to provide them with functional vision at far and near, and the outcomes and patient satisfaction depend on the selection. In this study, we present a binocular and portable vision simulator, based on temporal multiplexing of two synchronized tunable lenses allowing see-through and programmable visual simulations of presbyopic corrections. Seventeen binocular corrections were tested: 3 Monofocal (Far, Intermediate, Near), 4 Simultaneous Vision (bifocal, trifocal), 2 Monovision (far and near in either eye) and 8 Modified Monovision correct

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs), that provide unequivocal objective evidence of cortical binocularity have been recorded from adults and young infants using a new VEP system developed for this purpose. The system uses alternating field stereoscopy (AFS) to present separate visual stimuli to each eye. With this system, the binocular image pairs to the right and left eyes alternate at a high rate on a single video monitor. The subject wears spectacles incorporating light-scattering liquid crystal lenses which alternate electronically between opaque and clear modes in synchrony with the video mon

Using monocular and dynamic random dot correlogram (DRDC) stimuli, sequential visual evoked potentials changes were demonstrated in 2 patients following cerebral blindness. The recovery of binocular vision was delayed in comparison to the recovery of monocular vision. The results are not due to simple acuity impairment or convergence deficiency, and thus provide evidence for the vulnerability of postsynaptic cortical mechanisms of human binocular vision.

Coordination between visual and motor processes is critical for the selection of stable footholds when walking in uneven terrains. While recent work (Matthis et al. in Curr Biol 8(28):1224-1233, 2018) demonstrates a tight link between gaze (visual) and gait (motor), it remains unclear which aspects of visual information play a role in this visuomotor control loop, and how the loss of this information affects that relationship. Here we examine the role of binocular information in the visuomotor control of walking over complex terrain. We recorded eye and body movements while normally-sighted pa

Binocular vision disorders are commonly found postconcussion and associated with high symptom burden. We investigated the relationship between binocular vision symptoms and neurocognitive test performance. Thirty-four adolescents with concussion and 18 without concussion were assessed for cognitive performance using the CogState Brief Battery. Binocular vision disorders were determined using clinical examination and vision symptoms with the Convergence Insufficiency Symptoms Survey (CISS). A cutoff CISS score of 13 had high predictive accuracy for identifying individuals with a binocular visio

Orbital hypertelorism is defined as an abnormally wide bony interorbital distance. The aims of surgery are both correction of ocular dystopia and cosmetic reconstruction of the nasal crest. Marked improvement of visual function, especially binocular vision, by surgery is not expected. Here we report that surgical treatment unexpectedly resulted in a significant visual improvement for a 13-year-old boy with orbital hypertelorism who also had bilateral cleft lip and palate.

Monovision (MV) contact lenses are commonly used to provide optical correction for presbyopia. Based on their review of the literature on fusional mechanisms, Erickson and Schor predicted that monocular blur associated with MV should not be sufficient to disrupt binocular fusion. We found that fusional vergence ranges in presbyopes corrected with MV were not substantially different from those measured under full binocular nearpoint correction. There were small but statistically significant tendencies for the phoria and base-in vergences to be less exo under MV conditions. Comparisons of findin

Myopia is the fastest-growing, chronic eye condition that covers 30% of the population worldwide and is estimated to be around 50% of the global population (5 billion people) by 2050. Since there is an association between myopia onset and binocular vision disorder, this narrative review aims to establish a relation between the accommodative demand and binocular functions among patients using myopia control strategies. The identified articles follow different methodologies and various myopia control interventions. The literature search includes keywords using Boolean operators on the PubMed and

Although poor monocular visual acuity is the main characteristic of amblyopia, binocular vision is also often disrupted in amblyopia. Motion perception deficits have also been reported to be impaired in both amblyopic and fellow eyes. Occlusion therapy, the gold-standard treatment for amblyopia, is usually unsuccessful at fully restoring binocular visual function or motion perception. We evaluated the effectiveness of a video game-based dichoptic treatment (Vivid Vision) for restoring these aspects of vision in amblyopia. Twenty-one participants (age 6 to 56 years) with strabismic, anisometrop

SIGNIFICANCE: The range of clear and single binocular vision differs between 3D displays and clinical prism vergences, but this difference is unexplained. This difference prevents clinicians from predicting the range of clear and single binocular vision in 3D-viewing patients. In this study, we tested a hypothesis for this difference.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether changing fixation target size in 3D viewing significantly affects the vergence ranges and, if so, then to determine whether the target size effect is driven by fusional vergence gain changes, threshold
