Estimation of the contribution of assisted and non-assisted reproductive technology fertility treatments to multiple births during the past 30 years in Japan: 1979-2008.

The effect of assisted reproductive technology (ART) and non-ART ovulation stimulation fertility treatment on the number and rate of multiple live births from 1979-2008 in Japan was estimated using two independent data sources, ART statistics and vital statistics. Japanese ART statistics presented by the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology between 1989 and 2008 were gathered and reanalyzed. The number and rates of ART between 1984 and 1988 were interpolated using an approximation formula, using the values from 1983, when the first ART baby was born in Japan, and the 1989-1992 values. Th…

Disagreement on estimating cause of death under tuberculosis treatment between the national tuberculosis registry and statistics data in South Korea, 2011-2020.

BACKGROUND: Disagreement persists regarding the cause of death in patients with tuberculosis (TB) between the national TB registry and vital registration statistics. This study investigated the disagreement and contributing factors between TB-related and non-TB-related deaths using an integrated national TB database in South Korea. METHODS: We identified a sub-set cohort of 29,033 patients with drug-susceptible TB registered between 2011 and 2020 who died during TB treatment. The cause of death was identified by the Korean National Tuberculosis Surveillance System (KNTSS) and Statistics Korea

Drugs and Drug Classes Involved in Overdose Deaths Among Females, United States: 1999-2017.

Background: Drug overdose deaths among U.S. women have risen steadily from 1999 to 2017, especially among certain ages. Various studies report involvement of drugs and drug classes in overdose deaths. Less is known, however, regarding the combinations that are most often indicated on death certificates, particularly among females. Analyzing mutually, exclusive drug/drug class combinations listed on death certificates of females are the objective of this study. Materials and Methods: Mortality data for U.S. female residents were obtained from the 1999 to 2017 National Vital Statistics System (n…

Measuring population health outcomes.

An ideal population health outcome metric should reflect a population's dynamic state of physical, mental, and social well-being. Positive health outcomes include being alive; functioning well mentally, physically, and socially; and having a sense of well-being. Negative outcomes include death, loss of function, and lack of well-being. In contrast to these health outcomes, diseases and injuries are intermediate factors that influence the likelihood of achieving a state of health. On the basis of a review of outcomes metrics currently in use and the availability of data for at least some US cou

Gender differentials in death registration completeness in Gujarat, India: a policy analysis of structural, economic, and socio-cultural barriers.

BACKGROUND: Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) systems are fundamental to evidence-based governance and public health. In India, a persistent gender disparity exists in death registration: approximately 73% of male deaths are officially recorded compared to only 64% of female deaths nationally (NFHS-5). Gujarat, despite its relatively advanced socio-economic standing and near 93.1% overall death registration rate (CRS 2023), continues to exhibit this troubling gap. OBJECTIVE: This study analyses the structural, economic, and socio-cultural drivers of gender disparities in death re…

Misclassification of coronary heart disease in mortality statistics. Evidence from the WHO-MONICA Ghent-Charleroi Study in Belgium.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To validate the Belgian vital statistics for coronary heart disease (CHD) on the basis of an independent acute myocardial infarction (AMI) register, carried out as part of the WHO-MONICA project. DESIGN: Records of fatal cases of AMI in the WHO-MONICA register were individually linked to the corresponding death certificates. SETTING: Since 1983, the WHO-MONICA Collaborating Centre Ghent/Charleroi registers all fatal and non-fatal AMI in the age group 25-69 years in two geographical areas, Ghent in the northern Dutch speaking part and Charleroi in the southern French speaking…

Mortality Statistics in India: Current Status and Future Prospects.

When plague epidemics swept India in the second half of the 19th century, there was an epidemiological need for mortality statistics; as a result, vital event registration systems were established. However, despite the existence of multiple sources of mortality statistics in many ministries/departments of the government, neither the number of deaths nor the causes of deaths reported annually are complete yet. Multilateral international organisations have supported modelling for the generation of mortality statistics in developing countries rather than supporting and funding the development of

Deaths resulting from animal attacks in the United States.

The objective of this study was to elucidate the etiology and frequency of deaths in the United States from encounters with animals. The number of deaths from venomous and nonvenomous animals is reported annually to the US Department of Health and Human Services and published in Vital Statistics of the United States. This study is a survey of all animal-related fatalities listed as E-codes 905-906 reported in the Vital Statistics of the United States from 1979 through 1990. Data were extracted uniformly from the annual reports and analyzed using descriptive statistics. From 1979 through 1990, …

Deaths: leading causes for 1999.

OBJECTIVES: This report presents final 1999 data on the 10 leading causes of death in the United States by age, race, sex, and Hispanic origin. Leading causes of infant, neonatal, and postneonatal death are also presented. This report supplements the annual report of final mortality statistics and responds to an increasing volume of requests by data users for leading-cause tables with more age and race detail than previously published. METHODS: Data in this report are based on information from all death certificates filed in the 50 States and the District of Columbia in 1999. Causes of death

[Using statistics of tuberculosis clinics and hospitals in the social and epidemiological history of the "white plague" in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries].

During the late XIXth and the beginning of the XXth centuries, the struggle against tuberculosis is a strong reason to redefine health as social gaming, and not as individual gaming anymore. Here the number of actors increases on the market of medical cares, involving some tensions. This paper compares (by the means of death causes statistics) people affected and treated in a local hospital, and those treated in the antitubercular health centres from the province of Liège. It studies the respective contribution of hospital records and statistics list of health centres to the historical epidemi

Years of life lost due to premature death and their trends in people with malignant neoplasm of female genital organs in Shanghai, China during 1995-2018: a population based study.

BACKGROUND: The increasing aging population has been posing a significant challenge to disease burden in developing countries. In particular, the contribution of population aging to and long term changes of disease burden of malignant neoplasm of female genital organs (MNFGO) have not been quantitatively demonstrated. METHODS: Data were collected from the Shanghai Vital Statistics System of Pudong New Area (PNA). Crude mortality rate (CMR), age-standardized mortality rate by Segi's world standard population (ASMRW), and years of life lost (YLL) of MNFGO as the underlying cause of death in age…

Perinatal health care in Japan.

The maternal and infant health care system and vital statistics in Japan are reviewed. The improvement of socioeconomic conditions, higher education for women, comprehensive health care provided by the government, regionalization for high-risk pregnancy, medical advances in the care of pregnant women and neonates, the significant decline of perinatal and neonatal mortality rates in recent decades are all contributing factors in improved maternal-infant health care. On the basis of recent statistics showing that the survival rate of extremely low birth weight infants increased over 80%, the via…

Scaling evidence: national causal evaluation of perinatal quality collaboratives needs better data.

Perinatal quality collaboratives (PQCs) have been widely adopted across US states to improve maternal-infant health care delivery and outcomes, yet rigorous evidence of their national impact on maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity remains limited. This commentary identifies 2 fundamental challenges constraining causal inference in PQC evaluations. First, inconsistent measurement of key outcomes, stemming from staggered state adoption of revised vital statistics certificates and coding changes, confounds attempts to distinguish genuine health improvements from data artifacts. Second…

Abortion Restrictions Threaten Miscarriage Management In The United States.

Miscarriage and abortion require similar clinical management. Restrictions placed on abortion threaten the quality of miscarriage care, a policy spillover that affects many Americans. We combined vital statistics with life-table parameters to estimate that 1,034,000 miscarriages occur annually, including nearly 400,000 in US states with abortion bans. Attempts to restrict mifepristone access further threaten miscarriage management.

Death, demography and the denominator: Age-adjusted Influenza-18 mortality in Ireland.

Using the Irish experience of the 1918-1919 Spanish flu pandemic ("Influenza-18"), we demonstrate how pandemic mortality statistics can be sensitive to the demographic composition of a country. We build a new spatially disaggregated population database for Ireland's 32 counties for 1911-1920 with vital statistics on births, ageing, migration and deaths. Our principal contribution is to show why, and how, age-at-death data should be used to construct the age-standardised statistics necessary to make meaningful comparisons of mortality rates across time and space. We conclude that studies of the…

Oral contraceptives and primary liver cancer: temporal trends in three countries.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if vital statistics support a temporal association between the introduction of oral contraceptives (OC) and the incidence of, and mortality from, primary liver cancer in three countries from different regions of the world. METHODS: We used Cancer Incidence in Five Continents, volumes I-VI, for incidence data on primary liver cancer in the United States and Japan. The Centre for Epidemiology in Stockholm provided the incidence data for Sweden. We obtained mortality data for the U.S. from Vital Statistics of the United States, for Japan from The World Health Statistics A…
