Hyperhomocysteinemia and vitamin B-12 deficiency in elderly using Title IIIc nutrition services.

BACKGROUND: The effect of the folate food fortification program on the prevalence of hyperhomocysteinemia in the older population with coexisting vitamin B-12 deficiency is not known. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to determine the prevalence of hyperhomocysteinemia and vitamin B-12 deficiency in elderly who were using Title IIIc nutrition services, after folate food fortification in the United States. DESIGN: Demographic, nutritional, cognitive, routine diagnostic, and serum methylmalonic acid (MMA) and total homocysteine (tHcy) tests were performed in a convenience sample of 103 elderly enro

Mood disorder with mixed features due to vitamin B(12) and folate deficiency.

Vitamin B(12) and folate deficiency is often associated with affective disorders mainly of the depressive type. We report a case of a 42-year-old woman with a mood disorder with mixed depressed/manic features that was due to vitamin B(12) and folate deficiency. The psychopathology developed over a five-year period without hematologic or other overt clinical characteristics of pernicious anemia. Replacement treatment with vitamin B(12) and folate was rapidly followed by full clinical remission, electroencephalographic normalization and neuropsychological improvement. At a one-year follow-up thi

[Effect of nucleotide containing corrinoids on vitamin B 12 synthesis in Propionibacterium shermanii].

The influence of B12-CN, B12-OH, coenzyme B12, factor III and factor B on the synthesis of vitamin B12 and porphyrins by different strains of P. shermanii was investigated. Neither compound inhibited the development of propionic bacteria or suppressed porphyrin formation. All nucleotide containing analogues of vitamin B12 produced a strong repressive effect on the synthesis of corrinoid compounds regardless of the modifications in the upper and lower cobalt ligands. Factor B containing no nucleotide moiety did not show this effect. It is suggested that the nucleotide moiety of the vitamin B12

[Frequent and rare forms of vitamin B 12 and folic acid deficiency anemias].

The common and rarer causes of vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency are discussed with special reference to pathophysiological aspects and conditions in Switzerland. The overall incidence of Addisonian pernicious anemia was found to be 80 per 100,000 patients, whereas the incidence of other B12 deficiency states was 18 per 100,000 patients. Folic acid deficiency was found in 23 of 100,000 patients, though this figure appears to be an underestimate. Nutritional (latent) folate deficiency seems to be the most frequent vitamin deficiency in Switzerland.

Measurement of intestinal absorption of 57-Co vitamin B-12 by serum counting.

The results of the measurement of vitamin B(12) absorption by counting the radioactivity of 5 ml. serum obtained eight to 10 hours after the ingestion of an oral dose of 0.5 mug. vitamin B(12) labelled with 0.5 muc. (57)Co are compared with those obtained with the urinary excretion (Schilling) test. Inadequate urine collection and impaired renal function were responsible for low results in the Schilling test in four of the 12 control subjects, and an incomplete urine collection in four patients with pernicious anaemia could have led to doubt about the validity of the low result. The measuremen

Association between low vitamin B-12 status and latent tuberculosis infection among adults.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health threat worldwide, but most of the presumed infected individuals remain asymptomatic and contain Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) in a latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), and some of them will progress to active tuberculosis. Vitamin B-12 is crucial to maintain immune function, and play a role in the metabolism of MTB, while few studies investigated the impact of vitamin B-12 deficiency on tuberculosis. Therefore, we carried out the study to explore the association between vitamin B-12 deficiency and LTBI using the Nat

Enhanced anaerobic biotransformation of carbon tetrachloride with precursors of vitamin B(12) biosynthesis.

Relatively low concentrations of Vitamin B(12) are known to accelerate the anaerobic biotransformation of carbon tetrachloride (CT) and chloroform (CF). However, the addition of vitamin B(12) for field-scale bioremediation is expected to be costly. The present study considered a strategy to generate vitamin B(12) by addition of biosynthetic precursors. One of the precursors, porphobilinogen (PB) involved in the formation of the corrin ring, significantly increased the CT biotransformation rates by 2.7-, 8.8- and 10.9-fold when supplemented at 160, 500 and 900 microM, respectively. Vitamin B(12) and folic acid imbalance modifies NK cytotoxicity, lymphocytes B and lymphoprolipheration in aged rats.

Different vitamin B12 and folic acid concentrations could exacerbate the immune response. The aim was to evaluate different dietary folic acid and vitamin B12 levels on the immune response in aged rats. Male Sprague Dawley aged rats were assigned to three folic acid groups (deficient, control, supplemented) each in absence of vitamin B12 for 30 days. Several parameters of innate and acquired immune responses were measured. Serum and hepatic folate levels increased according to folic acid dietary level, while vitamin B12 levels decreased. There was a significant decrease in natural killer cell-

A physiological dose of oral vitamin B-12 improves hematological, biochemical-metabolic indices and peripheral nerve function in B-12 deficient Indian adolescent women.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B-12 deficiency is often considered synonymous with pernicious anemia, a rare condition in which severe malabsorption of the vitamin requires high-dose parenteral treatment. In developing countries such as India, inadequate dietary intake of B-12 due to socio-cultural factors leads to widely prevalent asymptomatic low B-12 status. In this scenario, lower doses of oral B-12 may be effective, safer and more affordable. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of oral B-12 treatment at physiological doses on hematological and biochemical indices and peripheral nerve function in B-12

The role of hyperhomocysteinemia as well as folate, vitamin B(6) and B(12) deficiencies in osteoporosis: a systematic review.

Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHCY) has been suggested as a new risk factor for osteoporosis. Recent epidemiological, clinical and experimental studies provide a growing body of data, which is reviewed in this article. Epidemiological and (randomized) clinical trials suggest that HHCY increases fracture risk, but has minor effects on bone mineral density. Measurement of biochemical bone turnover markers indicates a shift of bone metabolism towards bone resorption. Animal studies confirm these observations showing a reduced bone quality and stimulation of bone resorption in hyperhomocysteinemic animals

CdTe quantum dot as a fluorescence probe for vitamin B(12) in dosage form.

We here report the CdTe quantum dot (CdTe QDs)-based sensor for probing vitamin B12 derivatives in aqueous solution. In this paper, simple and sensitive fluorescence quenching measurements has been employed. The Stern-Volmer constant (KSV), quenching rate constant (kq) and binding constant (K) were rationalized from fluorescence quenching measurement. Furthermore, the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism was discussed. This method was applicable over the concentration ranging from 1 to 14μg/mL (VB12) with correlation coefficient of 0.993. The limit of detection (LOD) of VB12

Vitamin B(12) deficiency as a cause of delirium in a patient with spinal cord injury.

A man with spinal cord injury (SCI) and multiple medical comorbidities had new-onset delirium during his 14th month of hospitalization. Diagnostic workup did not elicit an obvious etiology for mental status changes. Delirium persisted despite psychiatry intervention, and he was unable to be weaned from the ventilator because of prolonged agitation. Routine anemia workup revealed a possible untreated vitamin B(12) deficiency, although laboratory values were inconclusive. Empiric treatment with cyanocobalamin injections was initiated, and his delirium remarkably resolved after 3 weeks of treatme
