An analysis of the association of gastroenteric lesions with chronic wasting syndrome of marmosets.

Retrospective pathology data from necropsies of 162 marmosets, Saguinus oedipus, were studied to determine the nature of chronic wasting syndrome, a poorly defined entity associated with a high mortality rate in many marmoset colonies. Paraffin sections of the gastroenteric organs of 116 of these marmosets were re-examined in detail; lesions were identified, quantitated, and analyzed with a method of multiple chi-square testing for possible associations between findings. Five distinct disease entities were identified: prosthenorchosis, amebiasis, paramyxovirus disease, sepsis, and chronic coli…

Anemia, wasting syndrome, and tattooing: A clinical triad to suspect HIV in the community.

Anemia, wasting syndrome, and a history of tattooing form a rare and concerning triad observed in cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Although the overall prevalence of HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) has decreased globally, there is an alarming rise in the risk of transmission linked to unregulated or unlicensed tattooing practices. In this case report, we present the medical history of a man in his 30s, who recently tested positive for HIV-1 antibodies. Upon presentation, he exhibited multiple concerning symptoms, including watery diarrhea, fever, and a signi…

HELIX syndrome in childhood. A claudinopathy with a salt-wasting tubulopathy phenotype with hypermagnesemia.

The thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle (TAL) reabsorbs approximately 30% of filtered NaCl through two mechanisms: transepithelial and paracellular reabsorption. The latter is carried out through a class of tight junction proteins known as claudins. A mutation in the gene encoding claudin-10 causes a rare salt-wasting tubular disorder with hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis. However, unlike Bartter syndrome and Gitelman disease, it usually presents with hypermagnesemia and extrarenal manifestations such as xerostomia, alacrima, and hypohidrosis with ichthyosis, known by the acronym HELIX sy

Tubercular meningitis presenting as cerebral salt wasting syndrome in an adult: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral salt wasting syndrome (CSWS) is a cause of hyponatremia in the setting of intracranial pathologies such as Central Nervous System (CNS) trauma, infections, and tumors. It is important to differentiate CSWS from the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) as their management differs. CSWS leads to hypovolemia as opposed to euvolemia or hypervolemia in SIADH. SIADH is managed with fluid restriction and this could worsen CSWS which is managed with adminstration of intravenous crystalloids to correct hyponatremia. CASE SUMMARY: A 42-year-old male wa…

Excessive loss of salt in urine confirmed that these events were caused by renal salt wasting syndrome after cisplatin administration. On the other hand, the third attack was due to the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion after surgery for a bone fracture. Gitelman's syndrome presenting as recurrent paralytic ileus due to chronic renal tubular K+ wasting.

Gitelman' syndrome, although a relatively frequent cause of chronic hypokalemia in adults, is rarely diagnosed correctly. It is frequently confused with overt diuretic abuse or Bartter's syndrome. We describe a 60 year man with 2 year history of recurrent paralytic ileus attributed to recurrent hypokalemia. Investigations in this patient revealed hypokalemia, metabolic alkalosis, hypocalciurea, and hypomagnesemia a tetrad diagnostic of Gitelman's syndrome. The peculiar clinical features of this condition and its management are discussed.

Application of a protocol for the diagnosis of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome in Italy.

Samples of superficial inguinal and bronchial lymph nodes, ileum, tonsil and lung were taken from three to five pigs on each of 61 farms with a clinical history of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). The samples were examined histologically and by immunohistochemistry for porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2). PMWS was diagnosed in two stages: first, an evaluation of the haematoxylin and eosin-stained sections that identified the cases in which the characteristic PCV-2 cytoplasmic inclusion bodies were apparent, and secondly, a conclusive step in which immunohistochemistry was appli…

Postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome of pigs in Korea: prevalence, microscopic lesions and coexisting microorganisms.

A retrospective study was performed on natural cases of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS), recorded from January 1999 to December 2000, to determine the prevalence, microscopic lesions, and other coexisting pathogens associated with PMWS. PMWS is diagnosed based on three criteria: the presence of clinical signs (retardation of growth), characteristic microscopic lesions (granulomatous inflammation and inclusion body), and the presence of porcine circovirus (PCV)-2 within these lesions. One hundred and thirty three (8.1%) of the 1634 pigs submitted from 1243 pig farms were diagn…

Acute hyponatraemia secondary to cerebral salt wasting syndrome in a patient with tuberculous meningitis.

A 30-year-old HIV-positive man presented with acute hydrocephalus secondary to tuberculous meningitis, for which an external ventricular drain was inserted. He developed marked natriuresis in the postoperative period, which resulted in acute hyponatraemia (131 to 122 mmol/l) and a contraction of his intravascular volume. A diagnosis of cerebral salt wasting syndrome was made, and he responded to sodium and fluid loading. This case highlights the differentiation of cerebral salt wasting syndrome from the more commonly occurring syndrome of inappropriate anti-diuretic hormone secretion as the ae…

Human chorionic gonadotropin hormone prevents wasting syndrome and death in HIV-1 transgenic mice.

At birth, transgenic mice, homozygous for the HIV-1 provirus pNL4-3, deleted in gag/pol, are normal in appearance and weight. Within several days after birth, the pups develop a syndrome characterized by dry, scaly, hyperkeratotic skin, growth failure, and death. The possibility that the homozygous embryos are being protected during gestation by a maternal factor led us to treat the newborn animals with various pregnancy-related hormones including human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), estrogen, progesterone, and dexamethasone. Treatment with hCG prevented death, led to normal growth, and markedl

Cerebral Salt Wasting Syndrome Following Right Occipital Craniotomy in a Patient With Metastatic Lung Adenocarcinoma.

Cerebral salt wasting syndrome (CSW) is characterized by excessive natriuresis leading to hyponatremia and hypovolemia. It is commonly encountered among patients who have undergone brain trauma or subarachnoid hemorrhage. The occurrence of CSW after neurosurgical procedures has been frequently reported in the pediatric age group; however, it is a rare phenomenon in adults. We describe the case of a 59-year-old female who developed symptoms of polyuria and polydipsia after a right occipital craniotomy.

Dimethylaminoparthenolide reduces the incidence of dysplasia and ameliorates a wasting syndrome in HPV16-transgenic mice.

The nuclear factor kappa light chain enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) has been implicated in the progression of cancers induced by high-risk human papillomaviruses (HPV). In cancer patients, NF-κB is also thought to drive a chronic systemic inflammatory status, leading to cachexia. This study addressed the ability of dimethylaminoparthenolide (DMAPT), a water-soluble NF-κB inhibitor, to block the development of HPV-induced lesions and wasting syndrome in HPV16-transgenic mice. Mice received DMAPT orally (100 mg/kg/day), once a day, for 6 consecutive weeks. Body weight was monitored weekly…

Agelas Wasting Syndrome Alters Prokaryotic Symbiont Communities of the Caribbean Brown Tube Sponge, Agelas tubulata.

The brown tube sponge Agelas tubulata (cf. Agelas conifera) is an abundant and long-lived sponge on Caribbean reefs. Recently, a disease-like condition, Agelas wasting syndrome (AWS), was described from A. tubulata in the Florida Keys, where prevalence of the syndrome increased from 7 to 35% of the sponge population between 2010 and 2015. In this study, we characterized the prokaryotic symbiont community of A. tubulata for the first time from individuals collected within the same monitoring plots where AWS was described. We also sampled tissue from A. tubulata exhibiting symptoms of AWS to det…

Microarray analysis of mediastinal lymph node of pigs naturally affected by postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome.

Postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) is one of the pig diseases with major economic impact worldwide. Clinical, pathologic and some immunologic aspects of this disease are relatively well-known, but the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenic mechanisms of the disease are still poorly understood. The objective of the present study was to investigate the global transcriptome changes in the mediastinal lymph nodes from pigs naturally affected by PMWS, as well as healthy counterparts, using the Affymetrix Porcine Genechip(®). From 366 transcripts showing significant differenti…
