Classification and characterization of user groups for wearable fall protection systems: A scoping review.

Wearable fall protection systems (WFPSs) effectively mitigate fall-related injury risks. However, varying application contexts and user characteristics create distinct demands for these assistive technologies. This review investigates the current research status and identifies the key characteristics to classify WFPS users. A literature search across IEEE Xplore, Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed databases (2014-2024) yielded 40 eligible studies, selected following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. These studies emphasize the importance of addressing user-specific needs and optimizing technology to

Plant Wearable Sensors for Data-Driven Precision Agriculture: From Multilevel Sensing to Crop-State Assessment and Adaptive Management.

Plant wearable sensors can resolve physiological responses that soil, weather, and canopy observations capture only indirectly. This critical narrative review evaluates optical, electrochemical, electrical, mechanical, thermal, and acoustic platforms across microenvironmental, growth, biochemical, and stress-related measurements. Crop-state assessment is defined as estimation of management-specific physiological variables, with independent reference measurements and growth-stage-dependent interpretation. The central trade-off is between continuous operation and physiological specificity: physi

A Wireless, Passive Multimodal Wearable Sensor With Decoupled Sensing Capabilities.

Developing electronic skin (e-skin) that perceives multi-stimuli and even exceeds human skin sensing capacity remains a major challenge. Yet existing technologies focused mainly on tactile sensing suffer from poor superimposed multi-stimuli discrimination, external power dependence, and wired transmission modes. Here, we report an integrated wireless passive wearable sensor based on frequency-division inductance-capacitance (LC) resonator array, capable of simultaneously detecting superimposed multi-stimuli including pressure, odor and humidity, along with decoupling. The system's performance

Soft pneumatic actuators for wearable systems: a structural classification and integration-oriented evaluation.

Soft pneumatic actuators promise gentle, body-safe assistance, yet many fail at the moment of integration: inflation alters geometry, increases profile, and stresses seams and ports. This topical review reframes actuator selection through a structure-first lens that links how an actuator is built to how it deforms and how it embeds in garments. Actuators are classified by structural architecture, deformation behavior, and fabrication method, and evaluated against four integration criteria central to wearable systems: geometric compatibility, fabrication scalability, system integration readines

Integrating Multi-Level Micro/Nanostructures to Synergistically Regulate Contact Behavior and Mechanical Deformation for Broad-Range High-Sensitivity Pressure Sensors.

Flexible capacitive pressure sensors hold tremendous promise for human health monitoring, human-machine interfaces, and wearable electronics due to their excellent conformability and high sensitivity. Nevertheless, breaking the inherent trade-off between high sensitivity and a broad detection range remains a challenge. Herein, we rationally design a hierarchical micro/nanostructured capacitive pressure sensor. This architecture strategically integrates a conical microcavity layer to optimize mechanical compressibility, a SiO2 micro/nanosphere layer to regulate interfacial contact behavior, and

Physics-informed hierarchical transformer for wearable sensor-based gait fatigue assessment.

INTRODUCTION: Gait-based fatigue assessment is important for sports injury prevention and rehabilitation monitoring, yet existing methods face limitations in accuracy and physical plausibility. Traditional approaches rely on handcrafted features that fail to capture complex spatiotemporal dependencies, while recent deep learning methods often produce predictions violating biomechanical principles. METHODS: This work presents a framework that integrates differentiable biomechanical constraints into hierarchical attention architecture for wearable inertial measurement unit (IMU)-based fatigue a

DigiPalp: Quantifying palpation of tissue hardness and surface geometry with a smart sensor-equipped glove.

Manual palpation is a cornerstone of medical assessment, yet its subjective nature limits its ability to provide quantitative data of characteristics like tissue hardness. Here, we introduce DigiPalp, a wearable smart glove designed to enable real-time 4D tactile scanning, combining 3D surface mapping with a tissue hardness measurement at each point. This quick (typically <0.5 seconds) and noninvasive measurement is achieved through a fusion of custom piezoresistive pressure sensors and magnetic position sensors embedded into the glove's fingertips. By featuring silicone-encapsulated stretchab

Flexible Piezoresistive Sensors Based on PPy Particles Encapsulating Natural Flat Silkworm Cocoons.

Fabricating flexible sensors with natural materials requires exquisite design and appropriate methods. In this study, a natural flat silk cocoon (FSC) was used as a flexible substrate for fabricating the piezoresistive pressure sensor. Supporting degumming was first applied to acquire sufficient internal space, and then, PPy was evenly coated on the FSC through in situ polymerization. This well-distributed coating of PPy on the surface and inside the FSC endows the assembled flexible pressure sensor with a high sensitivity (0.0633 kPa-1 in the 0-31 kPa range, 0.0228 kPa-1 in the 31-145 kPa ran

A 2.7-μm-thick robust, permeable, and antifreezing hydrogel electrode for long-term ambulatory health monitoring.

Adaptable hydrogel bioelectronics that sustain long-term, uninterrupted operation are critical for early disease diagnosis and personalized health care. However, conventional hydrogel electrodes suffer from mechanical fragility, rapid dehydration, freezing, and poor comfort because of thickness-induced interfacial gaps. We report a 2.7-micrometer-thick robust, permeable, and antifreezing hydrogel electrode for high-quality 8-day electrophysiological monitoring under everyday scenarios. The ultrathin electrode is fabricated using gelatin hydrogels with temperature-controlled phase change proper

The Use of Digital Devices to Monitor Physical Behavior in Motor Neuron Disease: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Motor neuron disease (MND) is a progressive and incurable neurodegenerative disease. The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale-Revised (ALSFRS-R) is the primary clinical tool for assessing disease severity and progression in MND. However, despite its widespread use, it does not adequately capture the extent of physical function decline. There is an urgent need for sensitive measures of disease progression that can be used to robustly evaluate new treatments. Measures of physical function derived from digital devices are beginning to be used to assess disease progres

Machine learning and wearable sensors for automated Parkinson's disease diagnosis aid: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of Parkinson's disease is currently based on clinical evaluation. Despite clinical hallmarks, unfortunately, the error rate is still significant. Low in-vivo diagnostic accuracy of clinical evaluation mainly relies on the lack of quantitative biomarkers for an objective motor performance assessment. Non-invasive technologies, such as wearable sensors, coupled with machine learning algorithms, assess quantitatively and objectively the motor performances, with possible benefits either for in-clinic and at-home settings. We conducted a systematic review of the literature

mPatch: A Wearable Hydrogel Microneedle Patch for In Vivo Optical Sensing of Calcium.

This study presents an in vivo optical hydrogel microneedle platform that measures levels of analytes in interstitial fluid. The platform builds on a previously published technique for molding hydrogel microneedles by developing a composite hydrogel (i.e., PEGDA and polyacrylamide) that is sufficiently stiff to penetrate skin in the hydrated state and whose fluorescence changes dynamically-via a conjugated aptamer-depending on level of analyte. In a demonstration relevant to hypercalcemia, the hydrogel microneedle distinguished varying concentrations of calcium (within a range of 0 to 2 mM, wh
