Cognitive deficits in multiple sclerosis patients with cerebellar symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Cerebellar dysfunction is common in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). However, neuropsychological studies of this clinical feature are lacking. OBJECTIVE: We investigate the neuropsychological features in relapsing-remitting MS (RR-MS) patients with and without cerebellar dysfunction. METHODS: Twenty-one RR-MS patients with cerebellar dysfunction (RR-MSc), characterized by prevalent ataxic gait and nystagmus, and 21 RR-MS patients without any cerebellar manifestation (RR-MSnc) pair-matched for demographical and clinical variables were studied. All patients from each group un

Cognitive correlates of HVOT performance differ between individuals with mild cognitive impairment and normal controls.

OBJECTIVE: To clinically characterize performance on the Hooper Visual Organization Test (HVOT) among participants with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and to identify naming and executive functioning correlates associated with HVOT performance among MCI participants and normal controls (NC). BACKGROUND: The HVOT is a common neuropsychological instrument that measures visuospatial skills and agnosia. It has, however, been criticized for its multifactorial nature, as several studies have reported executive or language correlates of HVOT performance. To our knowledge, simultaneous comparison of

Impairment in non-word repetition: a marker for language impairment or reading impairment?

AIM: A deficit in non-word repetition (NWR), a measure of short-term phonological memory proposed as a marker for language impairment, is found not only in language impairment but also in reading impairment. We evaluated the strength of association between language impairment and reading impairment in children with current, past, and no language impairment and assessed any differential impairment of NWR, compared with two other tests of verbal memory in children with language impairment with and without reading impairment. METHOD: Our sample comprised children aged 6-16y 11mo participating in

The neural correlates of semantic richness: evidence from an fMRI study of word learning.

We investigated the neural correlates of concrete nouns with either many or few semantic features. A group of 21 participants underwent two days of training and were then asked to categorize 40 newly learned words and a set of matched familiar words as living or nonliving in an MRI scanner. Our results showed that the most reliable effects of semantic richness were located in the left angular gyrus (AG) and middle temporal gyrus (MTG), where activation was higher for semantically rich than poor words. Other areas showing the same pattern included bilateral precuneus and posterior cingulate gyr

Recollection and familiarity in amnestic mild cognitive impairment: a global decline in recognition memory.

Despite memory failures being a central feature of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (a-MCI), there is limited research into the nature of the memory impairment associated with this condition. A further understanding could lead to refinement of criteria needed to qualify for this designation and aid in prediction of who will progress to development of clinical Alzheimer's disease. Dual process models posit that recognition memory is supported by the dissociable processes of recollection and familiarity. The present study sought to evaluate recognition memory in a-MCI in the framework of the d

Cognitive impairment and quality of life in long-term survivors of malignant brain tumors.

Thirtysix long-term survivors following the treatment of a malignant supratentorial brain tumor were examined for cognitive functions and global level of autonomy. Eighteen patients were symptom-free (SF) and 18 had clinical and neuroradiological recurrence (RE). The control group included 30 healthy subjects. All subjects underwent a neuropsychological battery for general and specific cognitive functions. The level of autonomy was assessed by means of the Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS) for oncological patients. SF patients showed less impairment than RE patients both at the tests, as well

Cognitive processes in auditory hallucinations: attributional biases and metacognition.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive models suggest that auditory hallucinations are experienced when mental events are misattributed to an external source; therefore, this study was designed to examine attributional biases in patients experiencing auditory hallucinations. The study also examined the role of metacognitive beliefs in the experience of auditory hallucinations, as some theories have implicated metacognition in the development and maintenance of auditory hallucinations. METHODS: Fifteen participants with a diagnosis of schizophrenia experiencing auditory hallucinations were compared with 15 non

Diagnosis and rehabilitation attempt of a patient with acquired deep dyslexia.

This study presents a patient (JH) suffering from acquired deep dyslexia. According to a cognitive model of reading, JH exhibited a significant impairment in both the phonological and lexical routes to reading. A rehabilitation program was proposed. We decided to focus on the lexical route using a priming paradigm. The written words were associated with a picture and the patient was invited to construct a mental association between the written word and the image. During five sessions, JH was trained to read 50 words. A pre-test, a post-test, and an 8-month follow-up session consisted of readin

The neural substrates of visual implicit memory: do the two hemispheres play different roles?

Identification of visually presented words is facilitated by implicit memory, or visual priming, for past visual experiences with those words. There is disagreement over the neuro-anatomical substrates of this form of implicit memory. Several studies have suggested that this form of priming relies on a visual word-form system localized in the right occipital lobe, whereas other studies have indicated that both hemispheres are equally involved. The discrepancies may be related to the types of priming tasks that have been used because the former studies have relied primarily on word-stem complet

Association between functional performance and executive cognitive functions in an elderly population including patients with low ankle-brachial index.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral arterial disease, as measured by the ankle-brachial index (ABI), is prevalent among the elderly, and is associated with functional performance, assessed by the 6-minute walk test (6MWT). Executive cognitive function (ECF) impairments are also prevalent in this population, but no existing study has investigated the association between ECF and functional performance in an elderly population including individuals with low ABI. AIM: To investigate the association between functional performance, as measured by the 6MWT, and loss in ECF, in an elderly sample including indiv

Cognitive function in non-demented older adults with hypothyroidism.

PURPOSE: (1) to evaluate objectively changes in cognitive function and electrophysiologic characteristics associated with hypothyroidism of varying severity and duration in primarily older persons; (2) to determine whether these changes are reversible when a euthyroid state has been attained after treatment with thyroid hormone. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We enrolled 54 non-demented hypothyroid patients (31-99, mean 68.6 +/- 16.4 years) with biochemical evidence of hypothyroidism (38 had overt and 14 had minimal hypothyroidism) and 30 euthyroid controls (31-96, mean 63.7 +/- 18.4 years) screened f

Cross-validation of verbal fluency measures as embedded performance validity tests in a clinical sample.

This study evaluated the utility of the Controlled Oral Word Association Test (COWAT-FAS) and Animal Naming as embedded performance validity tests (PVTs) in a mixed clinical sample of 165 military veterans referred for neuropsychological evaluation. Participants had either a self-reported history of mild TBI or were referred for evaluation of possible ADHD. Participants were classified as credible (0 PVT failures; n = 92) or non-credible (≥2 PVT failures; n = 73). Classification accuracy was examined for COWAT and Animal Naming raw scores, demographically adjusted T-scores, and two previously

The route of administration exacerbates prefrontal functional impairments in crack cocaine users.

Studies have evidenced more severe health consequences in individuals who smoked crack cocaine as compared to intranasal cocaine users. Differential neurocognitive deficits between the crack and intranasal cocaine-addicted patients, associated with prefrontal cortex functions, have never been tested using complex cognitive tasks in humans. In this study, we examined possible distinct neurocognitive deficits in 43 crack-addicted patients (CrD) compared with 36 intranasal cocaine-addicted patients (CD) and 32 controls. CrD and CD were evaluated after 2 weeks of supervised detoxification in two i

A comparison of age-related deficits in memory and frontal lobe function following oral lorazepam administration.

Differential responses on cognitive function of young (18-45 years, n = 17) and elderly (60-75 years, n = 9) subjects were compared before and after a challenge with lorazepam (2 mg oral) or placebo. Tests of memory and frontal lobe function were administered to determine the specificity of the amnesic deficit produced and the interaction of drug and the aging brain. Anterograde amnesia, as assessed by recall of a word list, was noted in both groups and was greater in the elderly. Whereas lorazepam produced only impaired recall in the young group, the elderly group manifested a further range o

Learning graphic symbols in two languages: Effects of monolingual teaching.

PURPOSE: Limited research exists to guide augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) intervention for children from multilingual backgrounds. When a graphic symbol-based AAC system is provided to children, they need to learn the meaning of the graphic symbols. This study determined the effect of teaching the association between a graphic symbol and a spoken word in one language on the ability of bilingual children without disabilities to transfer this learning to their second language. METHOD: A one-group pre-test-post-test design was used. The ability of 30 English-Afrikaans bilingual

Subclinical carotid artery atherosclerosis and performance on cognitive tests in middle-aged adults: Baseline results from the ELSA-Brasil.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) may be used as a biomarker for early cognitive impairment. However, the results of the association between CIMT and cognitive function in middle-aged subjects are mixed. We aimed to investigate this association in a large Brazilian sample with no history of stroke at baseline. Additionally, we tested the effect of interactions between CIMT and cardiovascular risk factors on cognitive performance. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, cognition was evaluated using the delayed word recall (DWRT), the category fluency, and the t

Evidence for an association between hookworm infection and cognitive function in Indonesian school children.

The association between helminth infection and cognitive and motor function was investigated in school-age children in Java, Indonesia. 432 children from 42 primary schools participated in the study. Children were stratified by age and sex into two age groups, 8-9 years and 11-13 years. Children infected with hookworm performed significantly worse than children without hookworm infection in 6 of the 14 cognitive or motor tests. After controlling for school (as a random effect) plus age, socio-economic status and parental education, sex, stunting (height-for-age < - 2sd), body mass index, haemo

Longitudinal associations between physical activity and cognition post-stroke: the Nor-COAST study.

Previous research has been inconsistent regarding the longitudinal relationship between physical activity and cognition after a stroke. In this study, we hypothesized that (i) higher levels of objectively measured daily step counts would be associated with better cognitive function at a group level (between-person level), and (ii) at an individual level, changes from expected step counts would be bi-directionally associated with changes from expected cognitive performance (within-person level) at the same and subsequent time points. We used data from 468 participants of the Norwegian Cognitive
