Intervening on impostor phenomenon: prospective evaluation of a workshop for health science students using a mixed-method design.

BACKGROUND: Unaddressed impostor feelings that impede developing interest in science and self-efficacy in conducting research have a dispiriting effect that perpetuates unsatisfactory diversity in the health science workforce when such feelings are experienced more by those historically underrepresented in the workforce. This warrants effective interventions to reduce the impact of impostor feelings and related factors that diminish career resilience. We examined the effects of a 90-minute workshop on impostor perceptions and growth mindset to raise awareness of impostor phenomenon (IP) and de

The Impact of Biases for Early-Career Women in Medicine: "It's the Little Day-to-Day Microaggressions".

BACKGROUND: Women physicians face multiple systemic and social biases in the clinical setting that erode mental and physical well-being. Gender-based discrimination was reported by 76% of early-career women physicians, decreasing to 57% for mid-career, and 36% for late-career. While these trends suggest that these biases may diminish with career progression, they remain a persistent burden of women physician's careers. This article offers a unique contribution by centering early-career women family physicians, a group underrepresented in qualitative research on workplace bias. This article foc

"Not only standing for, but standing up for diversity": an intersectional qualitative analysis of how university students embody and resist discrimination.

BACKGROUND: Universities are key social institutions that shape student health, wellbeing, and future trajectories. However, they are also embedded in, and contribute to, existing social inequities. Students holding marginalised positions consistently report experiences of discrimination within higher education. Such experiences adversely affect their mental health, sense of belonging, and academic trajectories. Much of this research relies on single-axis analyses, failing to capture the complexity of discrimination. Therefore, this study takes an intersectional, qualitative multi-level approa

Association of demographic characteristics with evolution of interest in anesthesiology during medical school.

BACKGROUND: Physician workforce diversity improves access to care, outcomes, and workforce productivity. Yet, women and sexual minorities remain underrepresented in anesthesiology, while representation for low-income trainees remains poorly characterized. How interest in anesthesiology evolves among these groups during medical school remains unclear. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study of U.S. MD-granting medical school matriculants from 2014-2017 used Association of American Medical Colleges data on self-reported sociodemographic characteristics and anesthesiology interest. Students wer…

Meeting the needs of regional minority groups: the University of Washington's programs to increase the American Indian and Alaskan native physician workforce.

Minority populations in the United States are growing rapidly, but physician workforce diversity has not kept pace with the needs of underserved communities. Minorities comprised 26.4% of the population in 1995; by 2050, these groups will comprise nearly half. Medical schools must enlist greater numbers of minority physicians and train all physicians to provide culturally responsive care. The University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSOM) is the nation's only medical school that serves a five-state region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho). Its mission addresses the need to…

A cross-sectional survey of community health workers and their roles in Indiana.

BACKGROUND: In the US, there is a lack of information about the community health worker (CHW) workforce, which is critical to inform workforce policy, development, and training initiatives. In this manuscript, we report the results of a cross-sectional workforce survey of CHWs in Indiana. METHODS: We conducted a statewide electronic survey of CHWs in Indiana. Eligible participants were self-reported CHWs and over the age of 18. The survey was adapted from an existing tool and included questions about CHWs' demographics, employer, compensation, and roles and responsibilities. The survey was pi

Cultural Humility, Nursing Students, and Aging Adults: A Descriptive Phenomenological Study.

This study explored how engagement with older adults promotes the development of cultural humility in prelicensure nurses. Using a descriptive phenomenological approach informed by Mezirow's transformative learning theory and Kolb's experiential learning theory, nine nursing students were interviewed following their volunteer experience at an international senior athletic competition. Four themes emerged: reframing aging, patient-centered connection, dismantling power dynamics, and shifting from medicalization to holistic care. Findings suggest that meaningful interactions with older adults fo
