Imaging findings of overuse wrist injuries in young artistic gymnasts.

Wrist pain is highly prevalent in young gymnasts. One of the causes is chronic overuse. Repetitive high-loading of the wrist during training … is. This review provides an overview of imaging findings of the spectrum of chronic overuse-related wrist injuries in gymnasts and proposes a pragmatic modality-selection and approach for practicing radiologists and radiologists in training.

Wrist injuries: a comparison between high- and low-impact sports.

Wrist injuries can be categorized as those caused by high- or low-impact sports. High-impact sports include auto racing, motorcross or bicycle racing, in-line skating, gymnastics, football, soccer, ice skating, snowboarding, and alpine skiing. Low-impact sports include tennis, track and field, and golf. High-impact injuries of the wrist range from displaced fractures and dislocations to ligamentous and acute tendinous tears. Low-impact sports typically result in nondisplaced or occult fractures, contusions, stress reaction, ligamentous sprain, tendinopathy, tenosynovitis, or tendon subluxation…

Wrist surgery: management of chronic scapholunate and lunotriquetral ligament injuries.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After reading this article, the participant should be able to: 1. Recognize the clinical features of chronic scapholunate and lunotriquetral ligament injuries and their long-term sequelae. 2. Describe the current management and latest techniques for treating chronic scapholunate and lunotriquetral ligament injuries and their long-term sequelae, such as wrist arthritis. SUMMARY: This article provides an update on the diagnosis, current management, and latest techniques for the treatment of chronic scapholunate and lunotriquetral ligament injuries and their long-term sequel

The emergent evaluation and treatment of hand and wrist injuries.

The anatomy of the hand is complex, which allows for the dexterity, strength, and adaptability of the most functional aspect of the musculoskeletal system. The evaluation and management of injuries to this area can be time consuming and pose a significant medicolegal risk to the emergency physician. Improperly diagnosed and managed injuries can lead to chronic pain, inability to perform activities of daily living, and even seemingly minor injuries can lead to missed work causing a significant cost to the individual and society. The purpose of this article is to review injuries to the hand and

Wrist injuries in nonprofessional tennis players: relationships with different grips.

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in tennis teaching techniques have been applied in nonprofessional tennis players to develop a more effective play. Hits with enormous amount of top-spin and lower technical and physical training are responsible for most wrist injuries in nonprofessional tennis players. HYPOTHESIS: The use of different grips (Eastern, Western, semi-Western) determines the pattern of wrist injuries in nonprofessional tennis players. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: Between January 2006 and August 2007, we evaluated 370 nonprofessional division II…

Nerve injuries of the elbow, wrist, and hand in athletes.

Upper extremity compression neuropathies are fairly rare in athletes. Initially, most can be managed conservatively. These conditions can follow direct contusion of the tissues that overlay these peripheral nerves or can result from vigorous, repetitive, athletic activity leading to tissue swelling and ischemia with nerve compression symptoms. A complete history and physical examination, including a neurologic examination, should be paramount when treating athletes with upper extremity injuries. Early diagnosis and treatment with conservative measures such as splinting, rest, activity modifica

Can clinical parameters predict fractures in acute pediatric wrist injuries?

OBJECTIVE: Fractures around the wrist are common in pediatric patients presenting to the emergency department (ED). This pilot study was aimed at identifying clinical variables that are most likely to be associated with a fracture. METHODS: This was a prospective blinded case series of patients 3-18 years of age presenting with an acute (<3 days) wrist injury, without obvious deformity. A team of five investigators blinded to the eventual radiographic findings evaluated patients. Physical examination variables included range of motion (ROM), site of maximal tenderness, and functional deficit.

The role of arthroscopy in athletic injuries of the wrist.

Arthroscopy has advanced our understanding of wrist dysfunction due to injuries sustained during participation in sports. Although the initial role of arthroscopy was primarily to facilitate diagnosis of specific injuries, technologic advances have allowed many of these entities to be managed arthroscopically. This minimally invasive surgery, which is used to treat cartilage lesions, ligament instability, synovitis, and other injuries, allows early and more specific diagnosis, satisfactory management, and early return to play or work. Arthroscopy should be considered a primary means of evaluat

Elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand injuries among sport rock climbers.

OBJECTIVES: Sport rock climbing with its repetitive high-torque movements in gaining the ascent of a rock face or wall, often in steep overhanging positions, is associated with a unique distribution and form of upper limb injuries. In this article, we review the biomechanical aspects of sport rock climbing and the types of injuries commonly encountered in the forearm, wrist, and hand regions of elite sport rock climbers. Because elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand injuries predominate, representing 62% of the total injuries encountered, these anatomical areas have been selected for review. DATA S

Hand and wrist injuries in the preadolescent and adolescent athlete.

In this time when physical prowess has been elevated to such a high level, the prepubescent and adolescent athlete have increased demands for performance placed on their immature musculoskeletal system. Although improved skills may result the athlete is exposed to more injury. Prompt, appropriate treatment of the injury with a controlled return to participation may prevent reinjury and disability. To this end, athletes, parents, coaches, trainers, and team physicians must maintain a close rapport for the benefit of the athlete.

Hoffmann pelvic stabilization for injuries to the hand and wrist.

We have used the pelvic Hoffmann technique successfully on two patients requiring flap coverage and have had no difficulty with its management nor complications with the pelvic pin fixation. We feel that this type of fixation provides significant advantages for the treatment of hand and forearm injuries requiring flap coverage for avulsing injuries to the hand and wrist.

Warfare injuries to the wrist. Fusions and motion-preserving procedures.

This retrospective study reports the outcome of secondary reconstruction after severe combat-related injuries to the wrist. Fifteen patients with a median age of 36 years were included. Nine patients underwent total wrist arthrodesis and six had a motion-preserving procedure. In patients with wrist injuries involving the distal radius, concomitant bone defects of the ulna, lunate and scaphoid are often present, making wrist motion-preserving surgical procedures challenging. Total wrist arthrodesis required iliac crest bone grafting in all but one case. The final median QuickDASH score for the …

Cartilage Injuries and Posttraumatic Osteoarthritis in the Wrist: A Review.

OBJECTIVE: Focal cartilage injuries, and posttraumatic osteoarthritis (OA) in the wrist are likely common and a cause of wrist pain. To estimate the incidence of cartilage lesions and to understand the pathomechanisms leading to wrist cartilage injuries and OA, a literature review on the subject was performed combined with a presentation of one of the authors' own experience. DESIGN: This study includes a literature review of the topic. As a comparison to the review findings, the observations of one of the authors' consecutive 48 wrist arthroscopies, were assessed. An Evidence-Based Review of Overuse Wrist Injuries in Athletes.

Overuse wrist injuries are a common problem in athletes and can be related to tendinopathies or osteoarticular pathology. Fortunately, athletes rarely miss time from their sport due to these conditions because many can be treated nonoperatively. For refractory cases, there often is a curative surgical procedure that can be done during the off-season.
