Chimpanzees empathize with group mates and humans, but not with baboons or unfamiliar chimpanzees.

Human empathy can extend to strangers and even other species, but it is unknown whether non-humans are similarly broad in their empathic responses. We explored the breadth and flexibility of empathy in chimpanzees, a close relative of humans. We used contagious yawning to measure involuntary empathy and showed chimpanzees videos of familiar humans, unfamiliar humans and gelada baboons (an unfamiliar species). We tested whether each class of stimuli elicited contagion by comparing the effect of yawn and control videos. After including previous data on the response to ingroup and outgroup chimpa…

Pandiculation: nature's way of maintaining the functional integrity of the myofascial system?

Pandiculation is the involuntary stretching of the soft tissues, which occurs in most animal species and is associated with transitions between cyclic biological behaviors, especially the sleep-wake rhythm (Walusinski, 2006). Yawning is considered a special case of pandiculation that affects the musculature of the mouth, respiratory system and upper spine (Baenninger, 1997). When, as often happens, yawning occurs simultaneously with pandiculation in other body regions (Bertolini and Gessa, 1981; Lehmann, 1979; Urba-Holmgren et al., 1977) the combined behavior is referred to as the stretch-yawn…

On the functional anatomy of the urge-for-action.

Several common neuropsychiatric disorders (e.g., obsessive-compulsive disorder, Tourette syndrome (TS), autistic spectrum disorder) are associated with unpleasant bodily sensations that are perceived as an urge for action. Similarly, many of our everyday behaviors are also characterized by bodily sensations that we experience as urges for action. Where do these urges originate? In this paper, we consider the nature and the functional anatomy of "urges-for-action," both in the context of everyday behaviors such as yawning, swallowing, and micturition, and in relation to clinical disorders in wh…

Effects of stimulation techniques on vocal responses: implications for assessment and treatment.

During voice evaluation and treatment it is customary for clinicians to elicit samples of the vowel /a/ from clients using various elicitation techniques. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of four commonly used stimulation tasks on the laryngeal mechanism. Eleven female singing students, studying at a university music school, served as subjects for the study. The subjects phonated the vowel /a/ using 4 vocal stimulation techniques: yawn-sigh, gentle onset, focus, and the use of the voiceless fricative. Videoendoscopic and acoustic evaluations of their productions were done.

Determination of the role of the 5-ht6 receptor in the rat brain: a study using antisense oligonucleotides.

The purpose of the present study was to determine possible physiological functions of the 5-ht6 receptor using antisense oligonucleotides (AOs) in male rats. Repeated intracerebroventricular treatment with AOs but not with a scrambled form of the antisense sequence (SO) gave rise to a specific behavioral syndrome of yawning, stretching and chewing and caused a 30% reduction in the number of [3H]-lysergic acid diethylamide binding sites (measured in the presence of 300 nM spiperone). Neither sequence, however, had any effect on other parameters measured (e.g., locomotor activity, body weight, f…

Parakinesia Brachialis Oscitans in a Patient With a First Manifestation of Multiple Sclerosis.

OBJECTIVES: Parakinesia brachialis oscitans (PBO) is the involuntary movement of an otherwise paretic upper limb triggered by yawning. We describe the first case of PBO in a patient with a first manifestation of tumefactive multiple sclerosis (MS). METHODS: A 35-year-old man presented to the emergency department with a first episode of generalized seizure. Neurologic examination revealed left-sided spastic hemiparesis, predominantly affecting his upper limb. Brain MRI showed a tumefactive right hemisphere lesion consistent with demyelination. CSF did not document unmatched oligoclonal bands. …

[Behavioral effects of chronic apomorphine, and D-1/D-2 dopamine receptor activities in rats].

The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of chronic treatment with apomorphine on yawning and stereotyped behaviors induced by apomorphine, and catalepic responses induced by haloperidol. Rats received apomorphine (1 mg/kg, sc), a direct dopamine D1/D2 agonist, or vehicle once a day for 21 days. The chronic treatment with apomorphine shifted to the right the dose response curve of yawning to administration of apomorphine, which preferentially activates presynaptic dopamine D-2 receptors (auto receptors) at low doses. Haloperidol (0.5 mg/kg, ip)-induced catalepsy mediated by t…

Bilateral dislocation of the mandible. 2 cases in a nuclear family.

Two cases of bilateral dislocation occurred in two brothers, aged 20 and 23 within a period of seventeen months. The junior one was the first victim in the month of April 1999 and the senior brother later in November 2000. The first was triggered by yawning whereas the second by vomiting. Different types of dislocation, diagnosis and management of dislocation is presented. The occurrence in two siblings raises the question of familial predisposition to dislocation.

Classification and Detection of Breathing Patterns with Wearable Sensors and Deep Learning.

Rapid assessment of breathing patterns is important for several emergency medical situations. In this research, we developed a non-invasive breathing analysis system that automatically detects different types of breathing patterns of clinical significance. Accelerometer and gyroscopic data were collected from light-weight wireless sensors placed on the chest and abdomen of 100 normal volunteers who simulated various breathing events (central sleep apnea, coughing, obstructive sleep apnea, sighing, and yawning). We then constructed synthetic datasets by injecting annotated examples of the vario…

Intermittent dietary supplementation with fish oil prevents high fat diet-induced enhanced sensitivity to dopaminergic drugs.

Eating a high fat diet can lead to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dopamine system dysfunction. For example, rats eating high fat chow are more sensitive than rats eating standard chow to the behavioral effects (e.g., locomotion and yawning) of dopaminergic drugs (e.g., quinpirole and cocaine). Daily dietary supplementation with 20% (w/w) fish oil prevents high fat diet-induced enhanced sensitivity to quinpirole-induced yawning and cocaine-induced locomotion; however, doctors recommend that patients take fish oil just two to three times a week. To test the hypothesis that intermittent (i.e., 2 d…

Single Injection of Twin Nerve Block in Longstanding Unilateral Temporomandibular Joint Dislocation: A Novel Technique.

Unilateral temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dislocation is a rare condition often triggered by yawning, vomiting, or other activities involving wide opening of the mouth, resulting from the forward movement of the condylar head. This case report highlights a longstanding unilateral TMJ dislocation managed by the single injection of local anesthetics into the deep temporal and masseteric nerve peripheries, alleviating muscle spasm and pain to restore TMJ function.

Involuntary motor phenomena in the locked-in syndrome.

Several involuntary movements were observed in patients who were totally immobile except for vertical gaze due to bilateral pyramidal transverse lesion at the pontine or midbrain level. In those conscious locked-in patients extensor spasms and flexor spasms could be elicited by nonspecific stimulation. Mimic pain reactions, pathological crying, and primordial screaming ("cat crying') were also noted. Other motor patterns were whining, moaning, groaning, sighing, and yawning. The pathophysiological implications of these observations are discussed.

A Case of Eagle Syndrome in a Chiropractic Patient.

Eagle syndrome is a rare condition that is characterized by, among other things, pain in the face and neck, with the majority of cases being unilateral and isolated to the lower jaw. It is not uncommon for the pain to radiate to the ear. Symptoms can be constant or intermittent and may increase with yawning or rotation of the head, causing Eagle syndrome to be frequently misdiagnosed. The objective of this report is to summarize the symptoms, diagnostic workup, necessary imaging, and management of Eagle syndrome.

The premonitory phase of migraine is due to hypothalamic dysfunction: revisiting the evidence.

OBJECTIVE: To critically appraise the evidence for and against premonitory symptoms in migraine being due to hypothalamic dysfunction. DISCUSSION: Some premonitory symptoms (e.g. fatigue, mood changes, yawning, and food craving) are associated with the physiologic effects of neurotransmitters such as orexins, neuropeptide Y, and dopamine; all of which are expressed in hypothalamic neurons. In rodents, electrophysiologic recordings have shown that these neurotransmitters modulate nociceptive transmission at the level of second-order neurons in the trigeminocervical complex (TCC). Additional in…
