Network pharmacological investigation and experimental verification of the peel of Zea mays L. regulating metabolic reprogramming in the treatment of diabetic nephropathy.

BACKGROUND: Zea mays L. is one of the most significant genes in the Gramineae family, and the peel of Zea mays L. (YMP), an unproven folk remedy for diabetes, has not been well studied. Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the most well-known and dangerous microvascular effects of diabetes mellitus. The effects and mechanisms of YMP on metabolic reprogramming are largely unknown. METHODS: The components of YMP were systematically identified using UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS. A network pharmacology study between DN and significant components was then carried out. The pharmacological trials of YMP were eva…

Corn (Zea mays L.): A low methylmercury staple cereal source and an important biospheric sink of atmospheric mercury, and health risk assessment.

In mercury (Hg) contaminated areas of Asia, human exposure to toxic methyl-Hg (MeHg) through a rice-based diet of locally produced crop may pose a health threat. Alternative cropping system to rice in such areas would be most desirable. In this study, corn, the leading cereal source in the world with large biomass, was demonstrated to accumulate an insignificant amount of MeHg from the soil in its edible portion compared to that in rice, suggesting corn being a very competitive alternative crop. By examining Hg stable isotope composition, Hg in the aerial parts of corn was found to be mostly f

Maize silk-based biostimulant seed priming enhances salt resilience and productivity in Zea mays by upregulating antioxidant defenses and targeted ion-transport genes.

Biostimulant-rich plant extracts offer a sustainable agricultural strategy to mitigate plant stress. Two-year field experiments (2024-2025) evaluated maize seed priming with maize silk extract (MSE) at 5%, 10%, and 15% (based on dry weight) under normal (NC, ECe=1.48 dS m⁻¹) and saline (SC, ECe=8.90 dS m⁻¹) conditions. SC significantly impaired photosynthesis, leaf integrity, and nutritional balance, ultimately reducing plant growth and grain yield. These detrimental effects were driven by elevated oxidative stress (superoxide and H2O2) and cellular damage (electrolyte leakage and malondialdeh

Signaling Molecule Hydrogen Sulfide Improves Seed Germination and Seedling Growth of Maize (Zea mays L.) Under High Temperature by Inducing Antioxidant System and Osmolyte Biosynthesis.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a novel type signaling molecule in plants. Seed germination is a key stage of life cycle of plants, which is vulnerable to environmental stress including high temperature. However, under high temperature stress, whether pre-soaking of maize seeds with NaHS (a H2S donor) could improve seed germination and seedling growth and the possible mechanisms are not completely clear. In this study, maize seeds pre-soaked with NaHS enhanced germination percentage, sprout length, root length, and fresh weight compared with the control without NaHS treatment, illustrating that H2S

Fermented non-digestible fraction from combined nixtamalized corn (Zea mays L.)/cooked common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) chips modulate anti-inflammatory markers on RAW 264.7 macrophages.

Chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are low-level inflammation processes affected by several factors including diet. It has been reported that mixed whole grain and legume consumption, e.g. corn and common bean, might be a beneficial combination due to its content of bioactive compounds. A considerable amount would be retained in the non-digestible fraction (NDF), reaching the colon, where microbiota produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and phenolic compounds (PC) with known anti-inflammatory effect. The aim of this study was to estimate the anti-inflammatory potential of fermented-NDF
