Low CYP1A2 activity in rural Shona children of Zimbabwe.

Caffeine is increasingly used as a biochemical probe for liver function, in cancer epidemiology, and in pharmacogenetics, with its recognized ability to assess the activities of CYP1A2, xanthine oxidase, and N-acetyltransferase-2. The activity of these hepatic enzymes was tested in 45 Shona children from a rural area of Zimbabwe with use of caffeine as a probe. Many of these rural black children had lower indexes of CYP1A2 activity than otherwise on our extensive records; the average value (3.78 +/- 2.9) was significantly (p < 0.001) lower than that of healthy white urban children from Zimbabw…

Endemic goitre in Chinamora, Zimbabwe. The Chinamora Research Team.

In a survey of 3841 rural dwellers in Chinamora, Zimbabwe, goitre was found in 29%. There was associated moderate iodine deficiency, and 8 people out of a subgroup of 229 had biochemical myxoedema; 2 others had biochemical thyrotoxicosis. Thyrotropin levels were not raised in 100 children aged less than one year. There did not seem to be a role for goitrogens in the pathogenesis of the goitres. A nationwide iodinisation programme should be introduced in Zimbabwe.

The political economy of tobacco of Zimbabwe: An analysis of stakeholder perspectives.

Tobacco continues to be viewed as a path to economic development by some governments, including Zimbabwe, despite widespread knowledge of tobacco's negative consequences for users, farmers and the environment. Zimbabwe is one of the top five tobacco producers in the world and the largest tobacco producer in the African region. Zimbabwe's focus on tobacco production creates difficulties for the implementation of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) which it signed in 2014. Our objective was to understand the political economy of tobacco in Zimbabwe, w…

[Comparison of the disease burden of schistosomiasis globally and in China and Zimbabwe].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the trends in the disease burden of schistosomiasis worldwide and in China, and Zimbabwe from 1990 to 2019, so as to provide insights into the formulation of the schistosomiasis control strategy in Zimbabwe. METHODS: Based on Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD 2019) data sources, the age-standardized prevalence, mortality, disability-adjusted life year (DALY) rate of schistosomiasis were compared in the world, China, and Zimbabwe and the trends in the disease burden of schistosomiasis from 1990 to 2019 were investigated using Joinpoint regression analysis. In a…

Governing a pandemic: biopower and the COVID-19 response in Zimbabwe.

INTRODUCTION: The extraordinary explosion of state power towards the COVID-19 response has attracted scholarly and policy attention in relation to pandemic politics. This paper relies on Foucault's theoretical differentiation of the political management of epidemics to understand how governmental framing of COVID-19 reflects biopolitical powers and how power was mobilised to control the pandemic in Zimbabwe. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of published literature, cabinet resolutions and statutory instruments related to COVID-19 in Zimbabwe. RESULTS: The COVID-19 response in Zimbabwe …

Spatial overlaps in the distribution of HIV/AIDS and malaria in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: In most developing economies particularly in Africa, more people are likely to die of HIV/AIDS and malaria compared to other diseases. HIV/AIDS tends to be superimposed on the long standing malaria burden particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. The detection and understanding of spatial overlaps in disease occurrence is important for integrated and targeted disease control. Integrated disease control can enhance efficiency and cost-effectiveness through the development of drugs targeting multiple infections in the same geographic space. METHODS: Using Zimbabwe as a case study, this st…

A pilot study to delimit tsetse target populations in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Tsetse (Glossina sensu stricto) are cyclical vectors of human and animal trypanosomoses, that are presently targeted by the Pan African Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Eradication Campaign (PATTEC) coordinated by the African Union. In order to achieve effective control of tsetse, there is need to produce elaborate plans to guide intervention programmes. A model intended to aid in the planning of intervention programmes and assist a fuller understanding of tsetse distribution was applied, in a pilot study in the Masoka area, Mid-Zambezi valley in Zimbabwe, and targeting two savannah spec…

Community groups as 'critical enablers' of the HIV response in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: The Investment Framework for a more effective HIV response has become integral to discussions on how best to respond to the HIV epidemic. The Framework calls for greater synergy and attention to factors that serve as 'critical enablers' and optimise HIV programmes. In this paper we argue for recognition of informal and indigenous community groups as 'critical enablers' of the HIV response. METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted in Matobo district of the Matabeleland South province in Zimbabwe. It draws on 19 individual in-depth interviews and 9 focus group discussions condu…

Use of traditional and orthodox health services in urban Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Health care in Zimbabwe is provided by both orthodox and traditional care providers. With formal medical services under economic strain it is important to understand the extent of consulting with traditional care providers and their effectiveness. METHODS: A cross-sectional community survey recorded consultations and self-treatment for episodes of illness among 1251 individuals in 222 households randomly selected in two high-density suburbs of Harare, Zimbabwe. Three dependent variables (illness experience, consultation behaviour and choice of care provider) were analysed against …

A retrospective study of poisoning due to snake venom in Zimbabwe.

1. Hospital records at the six major referral hospitals in urban Zimbabwe were reviewed for the years 1980-1989 in order to determine the types of snake, incidence, morbidity and mortality associated with snake venom poisoning. 2. A total of 1087 cases of animal toxin poisoning were retrieved retrospectively, 91.5% (995) of which were due to snake venom poisoning. Of the 995 cases, 50.9% (506) were females and 49.1% (489) males. The majority of patients were aged from 21 to 30 years (22%), followed by the 6-15 (16%) and the 16-20 year age groups (11%), respectively. 3. The mean period of hospi…

Pathogens in dog bite wounds in dogs in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Over a year swabs were taken from 87 untreated bite wounds in dogs seen by veterinary practitioners in Harare, Zimbabwe. Swabs were also taken from normal skin adjacent to the wound site, and gingival swabs were collected from normal dogs coming to the same clinics. The swabs were cultured aerobically for pathogens, particularly Staphylococcus intermedius, and the antibiotic sensitivities of the pathogens were determined by disc diffusion assay. The most common pathogens isolated from the wounds were S intermedius (23 per cent), Escherichia coli (18 per cent) and non-lactose-fermenting colifor…
