A systematic autopsy survey of human infant bridging veins.

In the first years of life, subdural haemorrhage (SDH) within the cranial cavity can occur through accidental and non-accidental mechanisms as well as from birth-related injury. This type of bleeding is the most common finding in victims of abusive head trauma (AHT). Historically, the most frequent cause of SDHs in infancy is suggested to be traumatic damage to bridging veins traversing from the brain to the dural membrane. However, several alternative hypotheses have been suggested for the cause and origin of subdural bleeding. It has also been suggested by some that bridging veins are too la

Metal ions affecting the skin and eyes.

The skin and eyes remain in constant exposure to the surrounding environment and are subject to accidental, occupational, and biological risks at all times, Normal development, homeostasis, and repair following injury depend upon appropriate levels of calcium, zinc, magnesium, copper, iron, and minute amounts of other trace metals. Both tissues exist in a permanent state of dynamic equilibrium with the environment whereby cells lost through natural wear and tear are replaced through genetically regulated mitotic patterns. Normal functional requirements of the constituent tissues depend on crit

A study of fatal injuries in Nigerian factories.

A study of the pattern of occupational injury mortality rates by industry and cause of death was undertaken to indicate the high-risk types of industry and the major causes of death, which could subsequently be used in developing cost-effective strategies for prevention. This is the first such study of accidental mortality factors in Nigerian factories. This paper reports the outcome of the study of mortality in Nigerian factories over a 10 year period (1987-1996). Between 1987 and 1996, a total of 3183 injuries were reported, of which 71 (2.2%) were fatal. The annual case fatality rate ranged

Association of intradialytic hypotension and physical performance with fall and fracture incidence in hemodialysis patients: The REPnet-HD study.

Although hypotension has been linked to fall-related injuries in older adults, evidence in hemodialysis (HD) patients remains limited. This study examined the effects of intradialytic hypotension (IDH) and physical performance on the risk of subsequent falls and fractures. In this prospective cohort study, 518 ambulatory HD patients were observed over 1 year to track the occurrence of accidental falls, severe falls (those requiring medical intervention), and fractures. Baseline assessments included IDH (defined as nadir systolic blood pressure [BP] during dialysis <90 mmHg or intervention for

Sexual abuse or traffic accidental trauma? Analysis of a case.

The authors present a complex case of a 5-year-old child who was involved in a traffic accident as a pedestrian hit by a car and reported widespread injuries mostly extrinsic at the anal level, suspected sexual abuse. As reflected in the literature (1), about 1 in 4 children are victims of abuse in their lifetime, and anogenital injuries are included in the clinical signs of suspected sexual abuse. In fact, we learn from the 2023 (2) update on the interpretation of clinical signs in cases of suspected child sexual abuse that a perianal laceration with exposure of the tissues underlying the der

Skeletal survey yields in low vs. high risk pediatric patients with skull fractures.

BACKGROUND: To assess for occult fractures, physicians often opt to obtain skeletal surveys (SS) in young, acutely head-injured patients who present with skull fractures. Data informing optimal decision management are lacking. OBJECTIVE: To determine the positive yields of radiologic SS in young patients with skull fractures presumed to be at low vs. high risk for abuse. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: 476 acutely head injured, skull-fractured patients <3 years hospitalized for intensive care across 18 sites between February 2011 and March 2021. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, secondary an

Iatrogenic femoral nerve injuries: Analysis of medico-legal issues through a scoping review approach.

PURPOSE: Accidental femoral nerve injury is a well-known iatrogenic complication of orthopaedic, abdominal, and pelvic surgery. Because of the largely transitory nature of the symptoms associated with nerve damage, its true incidence is in all likelihood underestimated. This work aims to illustrate the surgical contexts within which this nerve injury is reported, based on the evidence obtained from a Scoping Review of the literature of the last 20 years, with specific reference to the underlying etiopathogenetic mechanisms and prognostic outcomes, to highlight the evaluation issues of medico-l

Fully Intra-articular Lasso-Loop Stitch Technique for Arthroscopic Anterior Talofibular Ligament Repair.

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic techniques have gradually become popular for anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) repair. However, the reliability of the repair and the risk of nerve injuries are of concern. The aim of this study was to evaluate the fully intra-articular lasso-loop stitch technique for arthroscopic ATFL repair. METHODS: From October 2018 to December 2019, 43 cases with chronic lateral ankle instability were treated with this fully intra-articular lasso-loop stitch technique using the Arthro-Pierce instrument. Anatomical variation and distribution of the vagus nerve in the esophageal hiatus: a cross-sectional study of post-mortem cases in Uganda.

PURPOSE: Vagus nerve injuries during gastroesophageal surgery may cause significant symptoms due to loss of vagal anti-inflammatory and neuromodulator function. Many previous studies have shown high anatomical variability of the vagus nerve at the esophageal hiatus, but information on its variability in Uganda specifically and Africa in general is scanty. This study provides a reliable and detailed description of the anatomical variation and distribution of the vagus nerve in the esophageal hiatus region of post-mortem cases in Uganda. METHODS: This was an analytical cross-sectional survey of

Enthesitis of the direct tendon of the rectus femoris muscle in a professional volleyball player: A case report.

Enthesitis of the direct tendon of the rectus femoris muscle is a rare pathology which mainly affects professional athletes, and it is caused by overuse and repetitive microtrauma. Athletic jumping and kicking exert a great stress on the direct tendon of the rectus femoris muscle, and volleyball and football players are therefore most frequently affected. Enthesitis may occur suddenly causing pain and functional impairment possibly associated with partial or complete tendon injuries, or it may be a chronic condition causing non-specific clinical symptoms. We present the case of a professional v

Paternal involvement in childcare and unintentional injury of young children: a population-based cohort study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death in young children. A previous study reported the protective effect of maternal parenting on young childhood injury; however, few studies have shown an association between paternal involvement in childcare and young childhood injury. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of paternal involvement in childcare to reduce the likelihood of childhood injury. METHODS: A population-based birth cohort study in Japan (2001-02), the 'Longitudinal Survey of Babies Born in 21st Century', was used (n = 42 144). The impact of pat

The Use of Middle Meningeal Artery Embolization to Treat Chronic Subdural Hematoma in the Pediatric Population: A Review of the Literature.

Chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) is rare in the pediatric population and typically arises from various causes. These include trauma (accidental, non-accidental, or birth-related injuries), coagulopathies (such as hemophilia or von Willebrand disease), vascular malformations (such as arteriovenous malformations), and complications from previous surgeries. These diverse etiologies contribute to the complexity of managing this condition. Although middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization is proven effective in adults, limited studies have investigated its applicability in pediatrics. This study

Spotlight on postural control in patients with multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease that heavily affects postural control, predisposing patients to accidental falls and fall-related injuries, with a relevant burden on their families, health care systems and themselves. Clinical scales aimed to assess balance are easy to administer in daily clinical setting, but suffer from several limitations including their variable execution, subjective judgment in the scoring system, poor performance in identifying patients at higher risk of falls, and statistical concerns mainly related to distribution of their scores. Today we are able to objectively
