Impedancemetry gives important information in otospongiosis, both for relative compliance and impedance audiometry. The detection of the stapedius reflex is facilitated by recruitment in some audiometric types of otospongiosis and enables us to solve many of the masking problems which are particularly difficult in this disease due to the very important cross-hearing (or cross-over). Diphasic impedance changes (on-off effect) once detected must be systematically investigated since they allow us to detect otospongiosis early on. This sign is absolutely characteristic of the onset of a stapediove

Experiments were performed in 18 patients with peripheral facial palsy (Bell's palsy) including unilateral stapedius muscle paralysis. After exposure to narrow band noise centered at 0.5 kHz temporary threshold shift at 0.75 kHz was significantly higher in the ear with paralysis than in the normal ear. After exposure to 2.0 kHz narrow band noise there was no difference in TTS at 3.0 kHz between affected and non-affected ear. It was concluded that the stapedius reflex has a protective function against low frequency sound exposure and suggested that this protection might be extended to higher fr

OBJECTIVES: The mental parsing of linguistic hierarchy is crucial for language comprehension, and while there is growing interest in the cortical tracking of auditory speech, the neurophysiological substrates for tracking written language are still unclear.
METHODS: We recorded electroencephalographic (EEG) responses from participants exposed to auditory and visual streams of either random syllables or tri-syllabic real words. Using a frequency-tagging approach, we analyzed the neural representations of physically presented (i.e., syllables) and mentally constructed (i.e., words) linguistic u

For patients with epilepsy, one of the biggest problems is the unpredictability of the time when the next seizure will occur. Interestingly, some epileptic patients experience a sensory sensation preceding seizures, called aura, which helps them move to safety before a seizure. Here, we describe the development of the first animal model of auras, which could allow for a more detailed study of this phenomenon. Specifically, in mice, we presented sensory stimuli (sound and light cues) a few seconds before kindling an animal to induce seizures. Animals were kindled by electrical stimulation in th

Tactile stimulation has been shown to increase auditory loudness judgments in listeners. This bias could be utilized to enhance perception for people with deficiencies in auditory intensity perception, such as cochlear implant users. However, several aspects of this enhancement remain uncertain. For instance, does the tactile stimulation need to be applied to the hand or body, or can it be applied to the wrist? Furthermore, can the tactile stimulation both amplify and attenuate the perceived auditory loudness? To address these questions, two loudness-matching experiments were conducted. Partic

Objective. Optogenetic stimulation of the auditory nerve offers the ability to overcome the limitations of cochlear implants through spatially precise stimulation, but cannot achieve the temporal precision nor temporal fidelity required for good hearing outcomes. Auditory midbrain recordings have indicated a combined (hybrid) stimulation approach may permit improvements in the temporal precision without sacrificing spatial precision by facilitating electrical activation thresholds. However, previous research has been conducted in undeafened or acutely deafened animal models, and the impact of

In schizophrenia, a disorder associated with N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) hypofunction, auditory cortical plasticity deficits have been indexed by the synchronized electroencephalographic (EEG) auditory steady-state gamma-band (40-Hz) response (ASSR) and the early auditory evoked gamma-band response (aeGBR), both considered to be target engagement biomarkers for NMDAR function, and potentially amenable to treatment by NMDAR modulators. As transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is likely dependent on NMDAR neurotransmission, this preliminary study, conducted in 30 healthy volun

Past research suggests that the ability to recognise the emotional intent of a speaker decreases as a function of age. Yet, few studies have looked at the underlying cause for this effect in a systematic way. This paper builds on the view that emotional prosody perception is a multi-stage process and explores which step of the recognition processing line is impaired in healthy ageing using time-sensitive event-related brain potentials (ERPs). Results suggest that early processes linked to salience detection as reflected in the P200 component and initial build-up of emotional representation as

Lifelong auditory and visual sensory deprivation have been demonstrated to alter both perceptual acuity and the neural processing of remaining senses. Recently, it was demonstrated that individuals with anosmia, i.e. complete olfactory sensory deprivation, displayed enhanced multisensory integration performance. Whether this ability is due to a reorganization of olfactory processing regions to focus on cross-modal multisensory information or whether it is due to enhanced processing within multisensory integration regions is not known. To dissociate these two outcomes, we investigated the neura

OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated the characteristics of visual processing in the auditory-associated cortex in adults with hearing loss using event-related potentials.
METHODS: Ten subjects with bilateral postlingual hearing loss were recruited. Ten age- and sex-matched normal-hearing subjects were included as controls. Visual ("sound" and "non-sound" photos)-evoked potentials were performed. The P170 response in the occipital area as well as N1 and N2 responses in FC3 and FC4 were analyzed.
RESULTS: Adults with hearing loss had higher P170 amplitudes, significantly higher N2 amplit

Cross-modal auditory influence on cell activity in the primary visual cortex emerging at short latencies raises the possibility that the first-order visual thalamic nucleus, which is considered dedicated to unimodal visual processing, could contribute to cross-modal sensory processing, as has been indicated in the auditory and somatosensory systems. To test this hypothesis, the effects of sound stimulation on visual cell activity in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus were examined in anesthetized rats, using juxta-cellular recording and labeling techniques. Visual responses evoked by light

Sound is a sensory stimulant ubiquitously found throughout our environment. Humans have evolved a system that effectively and automatically converts sound sensory inputs into emotions. Although different emotional responses to sounds with different frequency characteristics are empirically recognized, there is a paucity of studies addressing different emotional responses to these sounds and the underlying neural mechanisms. In this study, we examined effects of pure tone (PT) and white noise (WN) inputs at ordinary loudness levels on emotional responses. We found that WN stimuli produced more

Instinctive defensive behaviors are essential for animal survival. Across the animal kingdom, there are sensory stimuli that innately represent threat and trigger stereotyped behaviors such as escape or freezing [1-4]. While innate behaviors are considered to be hard-wired stimulus-responses [5], they act within dynamic environments, and factors such as the properties of the threat [6-9] and its perceived intensity [1, 10, 11], access to food sources [12-14], and expectations from past experience [15, 16] have been shown to influence defensive behaviors, suggesting that their expression can be

Tinnitus is the sensation of a ringing, buzzing, roaring or hissing sound in the absence of an external sound. As tinnitus has been related to hyperactivity and synaptic plasticity changes in the central auditory system, invasive and noninvasive neuromodulation methods have been used to interfere with this underlying mechanism to reduce tinnitus loudness and distress. Recently, transcranial random noise stimulation applied over the auditory cortex induced a more pronounced effect on tinnitus loudness than transcranial direct current and alternating current stimulation. We performed tRNS over t

Interaural timing cues are important for sound source localization and for binaural unmasking of speech that is spatially separated from interfering sounds. Users of a cochlear implant (CI) with residual hearing in the non-implanted ear (bimodal listeners) can only make very limited use of interaural timing cues with their clinical devices. Previous studies showed that bimodal listeners can be sensitive to interaural time differences (ITDs) for simple single- and three-channel stimuli. The modulation enhancement strategy (MEnS) was developed to improve the ITD perception of bimodal listeners.

Cochlear implant (CI) listeners show limits at high frequencies in tasks involving temporal processing such as rate pitch and interaural time difference discrimination. Similar limits have been observed in neural responses to electric stimulation in animals with CI; however, the upper limit of temporal coding of electric pulse train stimuli in the inferior colliculus (IC) of anesthetized animals is lower than the perceptual limit. We hypothesize that the upper limit of temporal neural coding has been underestimated in previous studies due to the confound of anesthesia. To test this hypothesis,

We investigate whether the loss of one eye leads to enhanced multisensory processing. Previously, we measured discrimination of auditory, visual and audiovisual targets in people with one eye compared to controls viewing binocularly or with one eye patched. Both control groups demonstrated typical visual dominance (the Colavita effect) whereas people with one eye show no Colavita effect, and instead show equal preference for visual and auditory stimuli. Here, we loaded temporal processing in an attempt to favour audition and thereby reverse Colavita visual dominance with a modified repetition

The role of sensory feedback in the control of movements was investigated in two deafferented patients with complete loss of cutaneous touch and movement/position sense below the neck and two control groups of different ages. In a synchronized repetitive finger-tapping task in time with a regular auditory pacing signal, the deafferented participants showed a strong influence of extrinsic feedback. In contrast to controls who demonstrated a typical asynchrony between their taps and the pacing signal in all feedback conditions, the deafferented participants, with auditory feedback and visual mon
