Electrothermal Modeling of Surface Acoustic Wave Resonators and Filters.

In this article, an electrothermal modeling approach of surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonators and filters is presented. The starting point for the model is a preliminary design that has to be assessed for thermal aspects. Due to the high geometrical complexity of SAW components, simplifications are elaborated and qualified on resonator and filter levels to prepare the design for thermal simulation. A thermal model is created and simulated in a finite-element method environment. The simulated behavior is exported as a thermal impedance and implemented in a circuit model of a SAW filter. The la

Noise: Acoustic Trauma and Tinnitus, the US Military Experience.

Tinnitus is commonly experienced by military Service Members and Veterans, especially by the newest generation who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. When patients seek health care for tinnitus, it is important to determine its type, check for comorbid conditions that might be triggering or exacerbating the condition, and to address its functional and psychosocial effects. Otolaryngologists are usually the first health care professional to evaluate a patient with tinnitus, and it is essential to provide appropriate referrals for this high-burden condition. Noise-induced tinnitus is multifaceted;

Acoustic Correlates of the Four-Way Laryngeal Contrast in Marathi.

The study examines acoustic correlates of the four-way laryngeal contrast in Marathi, focusing on temporal parameters, voice quality, and onset f0. Acoustic correlates of the laryngeal contrast were investigated in the speech of 33 native speakers of Marathi, recorded in Mumbai, India, producing a word list containing six sets of words minimally contrastive in terms of laryngeal specification of word-initial velar stops. Measurements were made for the duration of prevoicing, release, and voicing during release. Fundamental frequency was measured at the onset of voicing following the stop and a

Electroglottographic and acoustic analysis of voice in children with vocal nodules.

PURPOSE: Vocal fold nodules are usually caused by voice overuse or vocal hyperfunction, and their symptoms include persistent hoarseness - a disturbance in the vocal fold vibrations which results in a turbulent passage of air in the glottis, manifested as a raspy, rough voice. The aim of the study was to present data concerning voice quality in patients with vocal nodules and to compare electroglottographic analysis (EGG) with acoustic analysis. METHODS: The study examined 57 children with vocal fold nodules (Group 1). Each patient underwent a phoniatric evaluation of the vocal tract, a video

Generalizability of clinically measured acoustic reflexes to brief sounds.

Middle ear muscle contractions (MEMC) can be elicited in response to high-level sounds, and have been used clinically as acoustic reflexes (ARs) during evaluations of auditory system integrity. The results of clinical AR evaluations do not necessarily generalize to different signal types or durations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the likelihood of observing MEMC in response to brief sound stimuli (tones, recorded gunshots, noise) in adult participants (N = 190) exhibiting clinical ARs and excellent hearing sensitivity. Results revealed that the presence of clinical ARs was not a s

Influence of plate acoustic waves on electronic transport in nanowires.

The acoustoelectric effect is the generation of a acoustoelectric current in a non-biased device by a piezoactive acoustic wave. This effect has recently attracted the attention of researchers as a possible method to control the motion of massive objects in the quantum regime. We suggest using this effect for development of highly sensitive nanoelectronic sensors. The sensitivity could be increased through the use of modulation mode of operation based on the acoustic pilot signal and the transition from quasi-stationary measurement to measurement at the modulation frequency. The acoustic delay

Acoustic neuroma with orofacial paresthesia: description of an atypical presentation.

Acoustic neuroma (AN) usually manifests with asymmetric hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness and sense of disequilibrium. About 10% of patients complain of atypical symptoms, which include facial numbness or pain and sudden onset of hearing loss. Patients with atypical symptoms also tend to have larger tumours due to the delay in investigation. We report a particularly interesting case of a patient presented to us with numbness over her right hemifacial region after a dental procedure without significant acoustic and vestibular symptoms. Physical examination and pure tone audiometry revealed no s

A frequent acoustic sign of speech motor delay (SMD).

Recent studies report prevalence, phenotype, and persistence findings for a paediatric motor speech disorder in addition to childhood dysarthria and childhood apraxia of speech termed Speech Motor Delay (SMD). The aim of the present study was to determine if there is a frequent acoustic sign of SMD, with implications for theory, assessment, and treatment. We examined the frequency of 19 acoustic signs of SMD in audio recordings of continuous speech and word-imitation tasks in three groups of speakers with SMD: 50 children (mean age 5.1 years) with idiopathic Speech Delay (SD) from 6 USA cities

Improving Acoustic Models in TORGO Dysarthric Speech Database.

Assistive speech-based technologies can improve the quality of life for people affected with dysarthria, a motor speech disorder. In this paper, we explore multiple ways to improve Gaussian mixture model and deep neural network (DNN) based hidden Markov model (HMM) automatic speech recognition systems for TORGO dysarthric speech database. This work shows significant improvements over the previous attempts in building such systems in TORGO. We trained speaker-specific acoustic models by tuning various acoustic model parameters, using speaker normalized cepstral features and building complex DNN

Infant-Mother Acoustic-Prosodic Alignment and Developmental Risk.

PURPOSE: One promising early marker for autism and other communicative and language disorders is early infant speech production. Here we used daylong recordings of high- and low-risk infant-mother dyads to examine whether acoustic-prosodic alignment as well as two automated measures of infant vocalization are related to developmental risk status indexed via familial risk and developmental progress at 36 months of age. METHOD: Automated analyses of the acoustics of daylong real-world interactions were used to examine whether pitch characteristics of one vocalization by the mother or the child …

Determination of elastic moduli from measured acoustic velocities.

Methods are evaluated in solution of the inverse problem associated with determination of elastic moduli for crystals of arbitrary symmetry from elastic wave velocities measured in many crystallographic directions. A package of MATLAB functions provides a robust and flexible environment for analysis of ultrasonic, Brillouin, or Impulsive Stimulated Light Scattering datasets. Three inverse algorithms are considered: the gradient-based methods of Levenberg-Marquardt and Backus-Gilbert, and a non-gradient-based (Nelder-Mead) simplex approach. Several data types are considered: body wave velocitie

Larval Zebrafish Lateral Line as a Model for Acoustic Trauma.

Excessive noise exposure damages sensory hair cells, leading to permanent hearing loss. Zebrafish are a highly tractable model that have advanced our understanding of drug-induced hair cell death, yet no comparable model exists for noise exposure research. We demonstrate the utility of zebrafish as model to increase understanding of hair cell damage from acoustic trauma and develop protective therapies. We created an acoustic trauma system using underwater cavitation to stimulate lateral line hair cells. We found that acoustic stimulation resulted in exposure time- and intensity-dependent late
