BACKGROUND: The natural history of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections in older women is critical for preventive strategies, including vaccination and screening intervals, but is poorly understood. In a 7-year population-based cohort study in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, we examined whether women's age and the duration of carcinogenic HPV infections influenced subsequent persistence of infection and risk of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 (CIN 2) or worse disease.
METHODS: At enrollment, of the 9466 participants eligible for pelvic examination, 9175 were screened for cervical neoplasi

BACKGROUND: The incidence of human papillomavirus-associated vulval neoplasia is increasing worldwide; yet the associated genetic changes remain poorly understood.
METHODS: We have used single-nucleotide polymorphism microarray analysis to perform the first high-resolution investigation of genome-wide allelic imbalance in vulval neoplasia. Our sample series comprised 21 high-grade vulval intraepithelial neoplasia and 6 vulval squamous cell carcinomas, with paired non-lesional samples used to adjust for normal copy number variation.
RESULTS: Overall the most common recurrent aberrations were

The clinical utility of viral-load and integration status of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection remains uncertain. We examined 75 women infected with HPV58, a worldwide rare type found to be prevalent in cervical cancers in eastern Asia. Viral load was significantly higher for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) 1/2, but those for a normal control group and for CIN 3 or cancer overlapped substantially. A pure integrated genome was found for all lesion grades, giving a poor positive predictive value (23.1%) for cancer. The pure episomal form's negative predictive value for cancer was onl

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a significant risk factor for uterine cervical carcinoma. Many studies have also demonstrated the presence of HPV in oral epithelia tissue, but the role of HPV infection in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is still controversial. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and type of HPV in OSCC and oral pre-cancerous lesions. DNA samples were collected by cytobrushing from 51 patients with OSCC, 46 with oral pre-cancerous lesions and 90 normal controls. Nested polymerase chain reaction and gene-chip arrays were used to identify the HPV type

BACKGROUND: Among the high-risk human Papillomavirus (hr-HPV) genotypes related to cervical cancer (CC) cases, HPV16 and 18 are the most studied worldwide. However, several studies have identified HPV 33 and HPV 35 as some of the most common genotypes in sub-Saharan African regions. This study aims to investigate the genetic variability and lineages of HPV 33 and 35 based on the HPV E6 and E7 genes in isolates from South African and Mozambican women with different cervical cytology statuses.
METHODS: The study analysed 26 HPV 33 and 46 HPV 35 DNA samples collected previously from South Africa

OBJECTIVE: To examine trends in the use of cervical cancer screening tests during 2013-2019 among commercially insured women.
METHODS: The study population included women of all ages with continuous enrollment each year in the IBM MarketScan commercial or Medicare supplemental databases and without known history of cervical cancer or precancer (range = 6.9-9.8 million women per year). Annual cervical cancer screening test use was examined by three modalities: cytology alone, cytology plus HPV testing (cotesting), and HPV testing alone. Trends were assessed using 2-sided Poisson regression.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes not only most cervical cancers but also cancers of the vagina, vulva, penis, anus, rectum, and oropharynx. Every year, 200,000 women die of cervical cancer in the world, and China accounts for about 10%. HPV vaccines are effective in preventing HPV infections thus HPV-related cancers worldwide. Studies on the clinical trials of the 2v Cervarix™ and the 4v Gardasil® have suggested that immunization with either of these vaccines provided some level of protection against other HPV types that are closely related to the types contained in the vaccines. Here we cond

BACKGROUND: Currently, the role of human papillomavirus (HPV)-58 in southwestern China has been unexplored. Although there is some controversy, it is proposed that the viral load of HPV correlates with the severity of intraepithelial lesions.
METHODS: We identified 7747 patients from south Sichuan and adjacent regions who were diagnosed with HPV between 2013 and 2017. The HR-HPV subtype distribution was analyzed and the patient's viral loads were quantified using real-time RT-PCR.
RESULTS: Among all 7747 patients screened for HPV genotypes, 1728 patients (22.31%) were identified as having HR

CONTEXT: Almost all cervical cancers are related to the human papillomavirus (HPV). Future strategies for cervical cancer screening will be based on HPV detection. The Hybrid Capture 2 (HC2) test is currently the most widely used method to screen for HPV.
OBJECTIVE: To test the performance of the Cervista HPV HR test for cervical screening.
DESIGN: We examined 875 cervical samples by HC2 and Cervista. Of these, 64 were high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN 2+) cases and were used to test the sensitivity of the assay. The remaining 811 were non-CIN 2+ cases, which were used to co

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide and it is responsible for most cases of cervical uterine cancer. Although HPV infections of the cervix do not always progress to cancer, 90% of cervical cancer cases have been found to be associated with high risk HPV (HR- HPV) infection. HPV DNA testing is widely used, along with Papanicolaou (Pap) testing, to screen for cervical abnormalities. However, there are no data on the prevalence of genotype-specific HPV infections assessed by measuring HPV E6/E7 mRNA in women representative of the Chin

BACKGROUND: Self-collected human papillomavirus (HPV) testing could reduce barriers to cervical cancer screening, with performance comparable to clinician-collected specimens. The ability of self-collected specimens to cross-sectionally and prospectively detect precursor lesions was investigated in an HPV vaccine randomized trial in Costa Rica.
METHODS: In the trial, 7466 women age 18 to 25 years received an HPV16/18 or control vaccine and were followed at least annually for four years. In this secondary analysis, we included all women who provided a self-collected cervicovaginal specimen six

To determine the etiology of combined high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) and adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS) of the uterine cervix, we examined human papillomavirus (HPV) subtypes, methylation status of the HPV-16 L1 gene, and immunohistochemical staining pattern of Krt7 in 8 cases of combined HSIL and AIS. Overall, 6 (75%) of 8 patients with combined HSIL and AIS were infected by the same subtype of HPV in both HSIL and AIS (cases 1-5, HPV-16; and case 6, HPV-18), whereas 2 (25%) patients showed infection with different subtypes of HPV (case 7, HPV-31 and -18; and case 8, HPV-52 a

BACKGROUND: Monitoring of condylomas is an early evidence of population effectiveness of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programs. If reporting could include HPV typing, the contribution by vaccine HPV types to condyloma burden could be monitored.
METHODS: A sentinel site for reporting of condyloma including HPV typing was established at the Centre for Sexual Health in Malmö, Sweden. In 2006 to 2009, when there were few HPV vaccines, 621 subjects with condyloma were reported and HPV genotyped.
RESULTS: Ninety-four percent of the condylomas contained genital HPV types. Thirty-five diff

The last 20 years is one of the most remarkable periods in the fight against cancer, with the realization that some human papillomaviruses are causally related to cancer and with the development of the vaccine against human papillomavirus infections. This is a historical event in medicine and the prophylactic human papillomavirus vaccines have provided powerful tools for primary prevention of cervical cancer and other human papillomavirus-associated diseases. This is very important as human papillomavirus infection is probably the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide, and over
