Recurrent appendicitis after initial conservative management of appendiceal abscess.

Therapy for children with appendiceal abscess remains controversial. The authors present two such cases initially treated conservatively, without interval appendectomy, that later had recurrent appendicitis. An 8-year-old boy presented with fever, abdominal pain, and a right-lower-quadrant abscess (noted by ultrasonography). During laparotomy, the abscess was drained and the appendix was not found. He was lost to follow-up but returned 2 1/2 years later with perforated appendicitis. An appendectomy was performed, and image-guided drainage of a postoperative abscess was required. A 10-year-old …

Acute appendicitis due to schistosomiasis: four cases at the Yalgado Ouédraogo University Hospital of Ouagadougou.

Acute appendicitis is a frequent pathology with diverse causes. Although Burkina Faso is a tropical country with endemic schistosomiasis, bilharzial appendicitis remains rare. We report 4 cases of appendicitis due to schistosomiasis that we treated at the university hospital of Yalgado Ouédraogo to call attention to the need for routine review of appendectomy parts. Four male patients, aged 22, 26, 30, and 35 years old, were admitted for abdominal pains. Eosinophilia was observed in one case. The preoperative diagnosis was acute appendicitis in 2 cases and appendiceal peritonitis in 2 others. …

[Laparoscopic appendicectomy: an 8-year clinical experience].

BACKGROUND: For more than a century, open appendectomy through a laparotomy has been the golden standard for the surgical removal of the appendix. Nowadays, many surgeons question the utility of laparoscopic surgery to perform appendectomies because it is commonly stated that the appendix can be removed through a small surgical incision carrying a minimal surgical trauma to the patient. Although open appendectomy is really safe, on the other hand it carries a considerable risk of postoperative complications, is associated with postoperative pain and affects patient s normal activity. Laparosco…

Current management of appendicular mas - a narrative review.

Appendicular mass is considered as one of the complications of acute appendicitis but there is no consensus on the optimal management of this condition. The management of this condition has always been conservative management with interval appendectomy as popularized by Oschner and Sheerin. The need for interval appendectomy has now been questioned, and an emerging trend has been early appendectomy by laparoscopic method. There are no guidelines on the management of appendicular mass and treatment is decided by the surgeon. We have conducted a narrative review to investigate what is the curren…

Continued increasing incidence of malignant appendiceal tumors in Canada and the United States: A population-based study.

BACKGROUND: To the authors' knowledge, there are limited data regarding the epidemiology of malignant appendiceal tumors. It remains unknown whether the previously reported trends are occurring in different countries and/or continuing in recent years and/or whether they are possibly due to increasing rates of appendectomies. In the current study, the authors investigated the patterns and time trends of malignant appendiceal tumor diagnosis by age group, sex, stage of disease, and histology in Canada and the United States and concomitant rates of appendectomies in Canada. METHODS: The Canadian

Stump appendicitis: challenging diagnosis with serious complication: a case report.

Stump appendicitis is a rare complication of appendectomy because of recurrent inflammation of the residual appendix. The diagnosis is often delayed because of low index of suspicious, which may result in serious complications. Twenty-three-year-old male patient presented with right lower quadrant abdominal pain after 7 month of appendectomy done at a hospital. On physical examination, he has right lower quadrant tenderness and rebound tenderness. Abdominal ultrasound was done with finding of blind-ended tubular noncompressible 2 cm long part of appendix with wall-to-wall diameter of 10 mm. Th…

[Characteristic of hepatorenal perfusion in patients with acute appendicitis].

Analysis of hepatorenal perfusion was conducted in 44 patients, suffering an acute appendicitis. In 22 of them laparoscopic appendectomy was conducted, in 22--appendectomy, using a standard access in accordance with Volkovich-Dyakonov or Mac-Burney method. There was established more favourable impact of laparoscopic appendectomy conduction on hepatorenal postoperative perfusion, what is connected with lesser pain syndrome severity, influencing common hemodynamics, and more rapid elimination (or prophylaxis) of postoperative paralytic ileus, as well as better physical state of the patients.
