We report a case of vitiligo in a 63-year-old man who had undergone intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin treatment following removal of a superficial transitional cell carcinoma in the bladder.

The supernatant arising after biomass separation of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis by flocculation/sedimentation was re-used after being supplemented with 25, 50 and 75% (w/v) of the original culture medium, based on corn steep liquor, glucose and mineral salts. Supplementation at 75% gave a spore concentration (1 x 10(10) c.f.u. ml(-1)) five times greater than that obtained with the other supplements.

The results of the study of B. anthracis vaccine strains Lange 1 and 2 in the form of spores after prolonged storage in 30% glycerine solution at room temperature are presented. The study revealed that spores stored for 100 years germinated and bacterial cells proved to be viable when cultivated in artificial nutrient media and in vivo. They exhibited typical cultural, morphological, biochemical, virulent, antigenic and immunogenic properties.

Anthrax is caused by the gram-positive spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis. The anthrax toxin consists of three proteins, protective antigen (PA), lethal factor (LF), and edema factor (EF). PA facilitates the translocation of LF and EF into the cytosol of mammalian cells. LF is thought to be a zinc-dependent metalloprotease that results in death. EF is a calmodulin- and calcium-dependent adenylate cyclase that causes edema upon entrance into the cytosol by elevating the cAMP levels in cells. The Sterne and Ames strains of Bacillus anthracis carry chromosomal genes bla1 and bla2, which confer beta-lactam resistance when expressed in Escherichia coli. Non-anthrax Bacillus species are rare, but serious causes of bacterial meningitis in those either immunocompromised or treated with CSF diversion. Although resistant to first-line antibiotics, they usually respond to chloramphenicol. We report a case of fulminant Bacillus cereus meningitis that complicated lumbar spinal drainage which proved resistant to all first-line antibiotics including chloramphenicol.

This report summarizes the recent investigations on the use of Bacillus anthracis as a live vector for delivery of antigens. Recombinant strains were constructed by engineering the current live Sterne vaccine. This vaccine, used to prevent anthrax in cattle, causes side-effects due to anthrax toxin activities. DESIGN: The study design is a cohort study.
PARTICIPANTS: Fourteen eyes of 14 patients with epidemic acute postoperative inflammation after exposure to bacteria-contaminated viscoelastic material were studied.
