OBJECTIVES: To analyze the management strategies in the children who had treatment-resistant dysfunctional voiding (DV).
METHODS: Among 75 children with DV who underwent pelvic floor biofeedback therapy (BF) between 2013 and 2020, 16 patients (14 girls, 87.5%) with a mean age of 9.81 ± 2.53 years that showed incomplete clinical response following urotherapy and initial BF sessions were retrospectively reviewed. The demographic and clinical characteristics, DVSS, and uroflowmetry parameters were recorded before and after the initial BF sessions. Subsequent treatments after initial BF and clini

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) often walk with a less dynamic vertical ground reaction force (vGRF), exemplified by a reduced first peak vGRF and elevated midstance vGRF compared with uninjured controls. However, the mechanism by which altered limb loading affects actual tibial plateau contact forces during walking remains unclear.
METHODS: Our purpose was to use musculoskeletal simulation to evaluate the effects of first peak vGRF biofeedback on bilateral tibiofemoral contact forces relevant to the development of post-traumatic osteoarthritis

PURPOSE: Fixation stability (FS) of the preferred retinal locus (PRL) may be improved by biofeedback fixation training (BFT) with microperimetry. Such training can be done on the patient's PRL or in different retinal loci with better functional characteristics. We studied both options and compared the outcomes.
METHODS: Sixty-seven consecutive patients with bilateral central vision loss, poor FS and visual acuity (VA) lower than 0.3 LogMAR were recruited for BFT with microperimeter. Patients were assigned into 2 groups. In group A, BFT was performed on the patient's spontaneous PRL. In group

BACKGROUND: Body weight supported treadmill training (BWSTT) is a frequently used approach for restoring the ability to walk after spinal cord injury (SCI). However, the duration of BWSTT is usually limited by fatigue of the therapists and patients. Robotic-assisted body weight supported treadmill training (RABWSTT) was developed to tackle the aforesaid limitation. Currently, limited randomized controlled trials are available to investigate its effectiveness, especially on cardiopulmonary function. The aim of this two-arm, parallel-group randomized controlled trial is to examine the feasibilit

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has identified a potential risk of spatial disorientation, motion sickness, and degraded performance to astronauts during re-entry and landing of the proposed Orion crew vehicle. The purpose of this study was to determine if a physiological training procedure, Autogenic-Feedback Training Exercise (AFTE), can mitigate these adverse effects. Fourteen men and six women were assigned to two groups (AFTE, no-treatment Control) matched for motion sickness susceptibility and gender. All subjects received a standard rotating chair test to determ

BACKGROUND: Conducting randomized controlled trials to measure the outcomes of lumbar spine surgery among patients with low back pain involves many methodological challenges. Using real-world data acquired from observational databases represents an alternative approach to attain evidence pertaining to lumbar spine surgery. This study aimed to measure the long-term pain and functional outcomes of patients with chronic low back pain treated with lumbar spine surgery compared with those receiving usual care.
METHODS: A target trial emulation was performed using data acquired from the national Pa

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is common after stroke, leading to adverse outcome. There is a paucity of high-quality evidence for dysphagia therapy, thus making it difficult to determine the best approaches to treatment. Clinical decisions are often based on usual practice, however no formal method of monitoring practice patterns exists.
AIMS: To determine speech and language therapists' (SLTs) approaches to direct dysphagia therapy with stroke patients in the UK and Ireland.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: A 24-item questionnaire was developed, piloted and delivered in a web-based cross-sectional survey targ

INTRODUCTION: Urinary incontinence (UI) is often associated with sexual dysfunction. We present our preliminary experience with a combined rehabilitative approach consisting of biofeedback, functional electrical stimulation, pelvic floor muscle exercises, and vaginal cones.
AIM: The potential impact of such practice on UI and sexual function was analyzed in our case series and discussed.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES AND METHODS: We evaluated three women affected by UI and sexual dysfunction. The patients underwent combined pelvic floor rehabilitation (PFR), kept voiding diaries, and filled out the

PURPOSE: At present, none of the conventional surgical treatments of solitary rectal ulcer associated with internal rectal prolapse seems to be satisfactory because of the high incidence of recurrence. The stapled transanal rectal resection has been demonstrated to successfully cure patients with internal rectal prolapse associated with rectocele, or prolapsed hemorrhoids. This prospective study was designed to evaluate the short-term and long-term results of stapled transanal rectal resection in patients affected by solitary rectal ulcer associated with internal rectal prolapse and nonrespond

OBJECTIVE: This randomized controlled study examined whether a 4-week blood pressure (BP) biofeedback program can reduce BP and BP reactivity to stress in participants with mild hypertension.
METHODS: Participants in the active biofeedback group (n=20) were trained in 4 weekly laboratory sessions to self-regulate their BP with continuous BP feedback signals, whereas participants in the sham biofeedback group (n=18) were told to manipulate their BP without feedback signals. BP, skin temperature, skin conductance, BP reactivity to stress, body weight, and state anxiety were assessed before trai

The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of diminished plantar cutaneous sensation induced by cooling on postural control during double- and single-limb quiet standing. 32 healthy adults were tested on an intervention day and control day. The intervention consisted of 10 min. of ice immersion of the plantar aspect of the feet prior to balance testing. Dependent variables were center of pressure velocity and area during double- and single-limb stance with eyes open and closed. Significant interactions were found between sensation and vision for double-limb center of pressure area, wit

BACKGROUND: Vestibular symptoms after surgery diminish rapidly, but the simultaneous progress in active postural control has not been fully addressed.
OBJECTIVES: The aim was to evaluate the progress in postural control in operated vestibular schwannoma (VS) patients with visual feedback posturography (VFP).
METHODS: 36 consecutive patients with unilateral VS were studied with the VFP pre-operatively, 1 month and 3 months after the surgery. The accuracy and velocity of active postural control movements to distant targets in VFP was measured and compared to that of healthy controls.
RESULTS:

Most clinicians and patients traditionally think of the tension-type headache (TTH) as the "unmigraine" or "nonmigraine." This view may be changing as distinctions between migraines and nonmigrainesdissolve. For many years, clinical diagnosis of TTH was based on nonthrobbing, bilateral pain. The mechanisms underlying the cause of TTH are still poorly understood. Some clinicians keep TTH and migraine in two separate clinical environments, while others see the two as a spectrum disorder with a common pathophysiology;however, there is not enough evidence to make anyone theory the clear-cut victor

Panic disorder patients often complain of shortness of breath or other respiratory complaints, which has been used as evidence for both hyperventilation and false suffocation alarm theories of panic. Training patients to change their breathing patterns is a common intervention, but breathing rarely has been measured objectively in assessing the patient or monitoring therapy results. We report a new breathing training method that makes use of respiratory biofeedback to teach individuals to modify four respiratory characteristics: increased ventilation (Respiratory Rate x Tidal Volume), breath-t
