BACKGROUND: Immediate molar implants (IMIs) have been shown to provide an effective treatment, but their placement comes with potential anatomically related risks.
METHODS: CBCTs of>400 dental sites were analyzed for key anatomical features at mandibular molar sites that can impact the placement of IMIs. Features measured included distances from each molar furcation to points risking lingual plate perforation or inferior alveolar nerve (IAC) damage, distances from molar root apices to IAC, mesiodistal and buccolingual widths of molar inter-septal bone (ISB), and thicknesses of buccal and ling

Ultrasound accelerates healing in fractured bone; however, the mechanisms responsible are poorly understood. Experimental setups and ultrasound exposures vary or are not adequately characterized across studies, resulting in inter-study variation and difficulty in concluding biological effects. This study investigated experimental variability introduced through the cell culture platform used. Continuous wave ultrasound (45 kHz; 10, 25 or 75 mW/cm2, 5 min/d) was applied, using a Duoson device, to Saos-2 cells seeded in multiwell plates or Petri dishes. Pressure field and vibration quantification

The goal of this study was to evaluate single-level anterior cervical discectomy and stabilization for bilateral facet fracture dislocations using bone graft and anterior titanium plates with unicortical screw fixation in the clinical setting. We conducted a retrospective review during a consecutive 6-year period of patients treated in a single institution for traumatic single-level cervical bilateral facet fracture-dislocation. All fracture-dislocations that could be aligned with traction were subsequently stabilized using an anterior cervical discectomy with bone graft and titanium unicortic

The need to provide rigid bony fixation in the surgical treatment of craniofacial deformities has inspired an on-going evolution of surgical innovations and implants. Because of the young age of many treated craniosynostosis patients and the unique pattern of cranial vault growth, the extensive implantation of metal devices is potentially problematic. The use of resorbable plate and screw devices offers all of the benefits of rigid fixation without many of their potential risks. Since the introduction of resorbable plate and screw devices in 1996, tens of thousands of craniofacial patients hav

Osteotomies around the knee are an effective procedure that shifts the weight-bearing axis from the pathologic side to the uninvolved side to alleviate pain, unload cartilage transplantations, slow down the progression of arthritis, and protect ligament reconstructions. The advancement in plates from nonlocking to locking have increased the stability of constructs to allow for early mobilization and maintained corrections. Further developments with patient-specific instrumentation have made these techniques more reproducible and accurate. Bone grafting and biologics remain a topic of debate bu

The growth plate is a cartilaginous tissue found at the ends of growing long bones, which contributes to the lengthening of bones during development. This unique structure contains at least three distinctive layers, including resting, proliferative, and hypertrophic chondrocyte zones, maintained by a complex regulatory network. Due to its soft tissue nature, the growth plate is the most susceptible tissue of the growing skeleton to injury in childhood. Although most growth plate damage in fractures can heal, some damage can result in growth arrest or disorder, impairing leg length and resultin

BACKGROUND: Flail chest wall injuries (FCI) are common in younger patients due to high-speed trauma and in older patients due to low-energy trauma or falls from a low height. They show a high incidence of concomitant injuries and are therefore associated with high morbidity and mortality. If there is also an ipsilateral clavicular fracture (CF), the outcome is significantly poorer. The skeleton of the shoulder and chest loses stability and can lead to a loss of function of the shoulder and a pronounced deformation of the chest wall.
OBJECTIVE: This article shows the origin and clinical import

More than 200 surgeries have been described for hallux valgus correction. The distal V-shape chevron-type osteotomy was described with no more than 50% translation of the distal fragment in relation to the metatarsal shaft. This concept of high, powerful correction for distal chevron osteotomy fixed by the Mini MaxLock Extreme ISO gives the surgeon the possibility of a mini-invasive rapid solution. A new technique of fixation is based on the Murawski and Beskin concept, because a powerful correction can be performed with a minimally invasive approach, but, in contrast to other studies, with st

The severity of growth arrest and angular deformities experienced by adolescent patients who have fractured their bone growth plates depends on the Salter-Harris (SH) classification of the injury. The SH classification depends on which anatomical elements of the zonal structure of the growth plate and the adjacent bone structures are injured. Animal models can provide indispensable insights into these injuries, elucidating cellular and molecular repair mechanisms inaccessible in clinical studies. This scoping review maps twelve different animal models of growth plate injury to SH-like classifi

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), or brittle bone disease, is a disorder characterized by bone fragility and increased fracture incidence. All forms of OI also feature short stature, implying an effect on endochondral ossification. Using the Aga2+/- mouse, which has a mutation in type I collagen, we show an affected growth plate primarily due to a shortened proliferative zone. We used single-cell RNA-Seq analysis of tibial and femoral growth plate tissues to understand transcriptional consequences on growth plate cell types. We show that perichondrial cells, which express abundant type I procollag

BACKGROUND: Rolando fracture is a comminuted, intra-articular fracture over the metacarpal bone base of the thumb which often leads to joint instability and requirement of surgery. The aim of this study is to evaluate the radiological and functional outcomes of Rolando fracture following surgical fixation with a hooked embracing plate (Acumed, 1.3 mm, Rolando Fracture Hooked Plate) designed for Rolando fracture.
METHOD: We retrospectively reviewed a consequence of patients between 2018 and 2022 with Rolando fracture who received open reduction internal fixation with hooked embracing plates. P

Bacille Calmette-Guérin osteomyelitis in infants is a known complication of Bacille Calmette-Guérin vaccination. Treatment consists of antituberculosis chemotherapy after biopsy/curettage; however, in cases of Bacille Calmette-Guérin osteomyelitis extending to the growth plate and epiphysis, the extent and time of surgical treatment such as curettage/biopsy is unknown because of bone growth disturbances. This article presents a case of an infant with this type of Bacille Calmette-Guérin osteomyelitis at the proximal tibia. A metaanalytic review was performed for possible risk factors of its re

We describe a method of fixing transverse condylar head fractures using a combination of a plate and long screw fixation. In the technical procedure, a 4-hole mini-plate was placed on the lateral side of the condylar head and the condylar stump after the fracture reduction. The first hole was drilled in the lateral side of the condylar head, and one 9 mm mini-screw was inserted, a second hole drilled from the lateral side of the condyle stump through the medial pole of the condylar head and a 16 mm screw was inserted in an oblique direction from inferior to superior, then 2 more 9 mm mini-scre

Intermittent pressure within the limits of physiological stress and strain stimulates the growth plates of a healthy bone (Pauwels), whereas a constant pathological strong pressure does inhibit the enchondral longitudinal growth (Hueter-Volkmann). An active change of direction of growth is induced if the pressure is exerted excentrically: growth deformities. In the presence of a diseased weak bone asymmetrical pressure leads to passive bending of bone: weight bearing deformities. An attempt is made to support these distinctions by experimental and clinical observations.

The ontogeny and fate of stem cells have been extensively investigated by lineage-tracing approaches. At distinct anatomical sites, bone tissue harbors multiple types of skeletal stem cells, which may independently supply osteogenic cells in a site-specific manner. Periosteal stem cells (PSCs) and growth plate resting zone stem cells (RZSCs) critically contribute to intramembranous and endochondral bone formation, respectively. However, it remains unclear whether there is functional crosstalk between these two types of skeletal stem cells. Here we show PSCs are not only required for intramembr

Open reduction and volar neutralization plate fixation avoids problems associated with dorsal plate fixation (eg, extensor tenosynovitis and tendon rupture) and minimizes the necessity for secondary plate removal. Volar plating is a useful technique for treating dorsally displaced distal radius fractures with minimal scarring, infrequent bone grafting, and safe early wrist mobilization.

INTRODUCTION: Volar locking plate fixation with cancellous bone grafting is an effective treatment for scaphoid non-union. However, the plate can impinge on the volar rim of the radius, causing pain or restricted movement that often necessitates plate removal. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of hardware removal on wrist function and patient-reported outcomes after plate fixation for scaphoid non-union.
METHODS: This prospective study assessed 49 of 113 patients who underwent plate fixation for scaphoid non-union and later required plate removal due to functional impai

Open reduction and plate fixation have been widely used for the treatment of displaced midshaft clavicular fractures (DMCF). The nonunion rate after plate fixation of DMCF has been reported to be between 0.1 and 15% and the construct failure rate is approximately 5%. Few studies have discussed the risk factors of construct failure. The aim of the present study was to identify possible risk factors of construct failure in plate fixation of DMCF and discuss the subsequent treatment strategies. Six patients who experienced plate breakage and clavicle nonunion between 2015 and 2017 were evaluated.
