Focal intracranial infections are unusual manifestations of salmonellosis. Forty-three such infections have been reported in the world literature. The clinical data for 34 well-documented cases are reviewed. Brain abscesses following stroke have been reported only rarely. We presented a case of putaminal abscess following putaminal hemorrhage. The patient was admitted to our hospital because of acute onset of left hemiplegia. The size of the hematoma was medium and the patient was conservatively treated. A case of an actinomycotic brain abscess in an adult patient apparently free of systemic infection is presented. The rarity of this etiology of brain abscess is underlined. The patient was treated by complete surgical excision and prolonged antibiotic therapy with penicillin. The authors stress the importance of taking into account this infrequent cause of brain abscess, the necessity of radical surgical treatment followed by intensive, prolonged and adequate antibiotic therapy, as the only means of reducing the high mortality rate.

In previously healthy, 49-year-old man, CNS infection due to Nocardia asteroides was manifested initially as sterile meningitis and then as a single large brain abscess and was treated successfully with medical therapy alone. Resolution of the brain abscess was documented with serial computed tomographic scans. The strain of N asteroides was sensitive to both sulfisoxazole and ampicillin. Although surgical intervention must always be considered in the treatment of brain abscess caused by N asteroides, medical therapy is preferable if the patient responds initially.

Brain abscesses are uncommon in children. We report a 3-year-old, previously healthy and immunocompetent boy, with an Absidia brain abscess. He presented with decreased sensorium and status epilepticus. The brain abscess was detected using cranial computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, and the diagnosis was confirmed with pus and brain tissue cultures. The patient responded to surgical drainage with concomitant intravenous and intraventricular amphotericin B.

Isolated cerebral mucormycosis is rare. We describe a patient with a brain tumor and a surgically-related Rhizopus oryzae brain abscess. Her abscess was effectively treated with posaconazole, micafungin and colony-stimulating factor followed by posaconazole alone. To our knowledge, cerebral mucormycosis secondary to brain surgery had not been previously reported.
