Tail wagging cats: Veterinary implications of AI-generated video.

BACKGROUND: Generative artificial intelligence (genAI) has the capacity to create realistic and convincing animal videos; however, it must simplify and reduce behavioural variation to do so, possibly leading to misinformation. METHODS: We categorised 29 videos in the press release for a specific video genAI engine. Twelve featured animals. We mapped each video to the five domains of animal welfare (nutrition, physical environment, health, behavioural interactions and mental state) and categorised behaviour and welfare accordingly. RESULTS: Negative welfare was rarely seen, ranging from 8% (n

The Approach to Chronic Cough in Dogs and Cats.

This article outlines a comprehensive approach to diagnosing and managing chronic cough in dogs and cats. It emphasizes the importance of thorough history and physical examination, alongside consideration of signalment, to enable prioritization of differential diagnoses. Diagnostic tools including radiography, computed tomography, fluoroscopy, bronchoscopy, and airway sampling are commonly integrated for definitive diagnosis. Treatment can proceed absent a definitive diagnosis; commonly used drug classes in the treatment of chronic cough in dogs and cats include antimicrobials, anti-inflammato…

Primary Immune Thrombocytopenia in 17 Cats: A Case Series.

This retrospective case series describes the clinical features, treatment, and course of disease in 17 cats diagnosed with primary immune thrombocytopenia (pITP). At the time of diagnosis, median age was 4.25 yr (range 7 mo to 16 yr), 15 cats (88.2%) had clinical bleeding, and median platelet count was 10,000/μL (range 5000-50,000/μL). All 17 cats were treated with corticosteroids; cyclosporine was additionally prescribed in 14 cats. The median duration of immunosuppressive therapy was 365 days (range 49-2086 days). Thirteen cats achieved a platelet count > 100,000/µL at a median of 15 days (r…

Additional PAX3 Variants for Dominant Blue Eyes in Cats.

Since the recent publication of the first feline variant of the PAX3 (Paired Box 3) gene associated with blue eyes and minimal white spotting (DBE, Dominant Blue Eyes), three further variants of PAX3 have been reported in felines. However, these four variants do not account for all the different feline lines that exhibit DBE. Whole-genome sequencing using short-read and long-read technologies identified a large complex structural variant involving two deletions and an inversion in a purebred line of British shorthair and longhair cats. All 39 British cats with a BDE phenotype were heterozygous…

Cutaneous paraneoplastic syndromes in cats: a comparative clinical review.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Cutaneous paraneoplastic syndromes (CPSs) in cats represent a diverse group of rare dermatological manifestations that occur as indirect consequences of underlying neoplasia. These syndromes are thought to arise due to tumour-associated systemic effects, including dysregulation of immune responses, metabolic disturbances and aberrant production of cytokines or growth factors. Recognising CPSs is clinically relevant, as they may serve as early indicators of occult neoplasia, guiding timely diagnosis and intervention. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: Diagnosing CPSs requires a high ind…

Diagnostic Imaging Features of Inflammatory Laryngeal Disease in Cats.

Feline inflammatory laryngeal disease is a nonneoplastic condition with limited documentation in veterinary literature. This retrospective study assesses the imaging characteristics and clinical outcomes of seven cats diagnosed with this disease. Radiography, echolaryngography, and endoscopy identified laryngeal masses or thickening in all cases. Echolaryngography, utilizing an 18 MHz high-frequency probe and spatial compounding, revealed abnormalities in shape, margination, echogenicity, echotexture, and laryngeal immobility, closely aligning with endoscopic findings. Histopathology revealed …

Thoracic radiographic findings in cats with feline infectious peritonitis.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to describe thoracic radiographic findings and associated histopathological changes (where available) in cats with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). METHODS: This was a retrospective descriptive study. Cats were included if they had a definitive diagnosis of FIP (based on histopathology and immunohistochemistry) or a presumptive diagnosis of FIP (based on case review by two veterinary internists), and contemporaneous orthogonal thoracic radiographs. Radiographs were reviewed retrospectively by a veterinary radiologist and veterinary radiology res…

Exposure of Domestic Cats (Felis catus) to Rodenticidal Compounds.

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are highly effective, but can be of environmental concern due to primary and secondary non-target exposure, with the latter possible being relevant to domestic cats. Therefore, liver residues of ARs and an alternative rodenticide, α-chloralose, were systematically monitored in domestic cats for the first time in the current study. In 2021 and 2022, the carcasses of 99 cats were collected in Slovenia and liver residues were measured by using solid supported liquid-liquid extraction and LC-MS/MS. The results show that 65% of cats carried at least one rodenticide.…

Surgical stabilization of craniocervical junction abnormalities in two cats.

Two cats were evaluated because of clinical signs consistent with tetraplegia or ataxia of four limbs and cerebellar signs. The cats were diagnosed with craniocervical junction abnormalities (CJAs) by radiographs, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Both cats underwent surgical stabilization using a patient-specific titanium atlantoaxial (AA) fixation plate and drill guide templates. In case 2, in addition to AA fixation, the separated dens and the occipital bone compressing the cerebellum were removed. Repositioning and fixation of the AA joint using a custom drill guide templ…

Evaluation of total urethral thickness using ultrasonography in cats.

INTRODUCTION: Urethral wall thickness is a potential indicator of pathological changes in the feline lower urinary tract. However, reference values for total urethral thickness in cats have not been established. This study aimed to develop ultrasonographic reference ranges for total urethral thickness in clinically normal cats and to evaluate the effects of breed, sex, neutering status, body weight, and bladder volume. We further compared urethral thickness between healthy cats and those presenting with lower urinary tract signs (LUTS) and determined a diagnostic cutoff value. METHODS: A tota…

Pathophysiology of Prediabetes, Diabetes, and Diabetic Remission in Cats.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) has a heterogenous cause, and the exact pathogenesis differs between patients. Most diabetic cats have a cause similar to human type 2 DM but, in some, DM is associated with underlying conditions, such as hypersomatotropism, hyperadrenocorticism, or administration of diabetogenic drugs. Predisposing factors for feline DM include obesity, reduced physical activity, male sex, and increasing age. Gluco(lipo)toxicity and genetic predisposition also likely play roles in pathogenesis. Prediabetes cannot be accurately diagnosed in cats at the current time. Diabetic cats can ent…

Neoplasia in captive Tsushima leopard cats (Prionailurus bengalensis euptilurus).

The Tsushima leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis euptilurus) is a subspecies of the mainland leopard cat that lives on the small island of Tsushima, Japan. Captive breeding has been attempted in zoos in Japan because only approximately 100 animals remain in the wild and the Tsushima leopard cat is an endangered species. There are very few reports on diseases, including tumours, of this species. We analysed the deaths of 58 Tsushima leopard cats and confirmed that nine had neoplastic disease. The average age at death of the animals with neoplasia was 14 years and tumours were the primary caus…

Mechanical ventilation in dogs and cats with tick paralysis.

Respiratory failure from tick paralysis (TP) is an important cause of mortality in cats and dogs in Australia, occurring from a combination of respiratory muscle paralysis, upper respiratory tract obstruction and pulmonary disease. Patients may require positive-pressure ventilation in management of any combination of hypoxemia, hypoventilation or respiratory fatigue, but may also require airway management due to laryngeal paralysis. No single ventilation strategy is recommended due to the heterogenous disease presentations. Lung protective ventilation should be used in patients with pulmonary …

Independent COL17A1 Variants in Cats with Junctional Epidermolysis Bullosa.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB), characterized by defective adhesion of the epidermis to the dermis, is a heterogeneous disease with many subtypes in human patients and domestic animals. We investigated two unrelated cats with recurring erosions and ulcers on ear pinnae, oral mucosa, and paw pads that were suggestive of EB. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of EB in both cats. Case 1 was severe and had to be euthanized at 5 months of age. Case 2 had a milder course and was alive at 11 years of age at the time of writing. Whole genome sequencing of both affected cats revealed independent homozy…
