Can Expressing Feelings About Violence be a Protective Buffer in the Linkage Between Bullying Victimization and Delinquent Activities?

The current study explores whether expressing feelings about violence through journal or notebook and/or school assignment might be associated with a decrease in delinquent activities, such as substance use, theft of property, and assaultive behaviors. A cross-sectional study with purposive sampling was conducted. The participants were comprised of African American adolescents in four Chicago's Southside neighborhoods. Measures included bullying victimization, substance use, theft of property, assaultive behavior, expressing feelings about violence, and the covariates (age, biological sex, and…

Network Viral Load: A Critical Metric for HIV Elimination.

BACKGROUND: Associations have been observed between an aggregate viral load measure, the community viral load, and new HIV diagnoses. The community viral load aggregates viral loads within chosen geographic areas, restricting inferences about HIV acquisition risk to these areas. We develop a more precise metric, the network viral load (NVL), to measure the composite viral load within a risk network of a HIV-negative individual. METHODS: We examined the relationship between NVL and HIV infection among young men who have sex with men in Chicago, United States. Networks were generated using resp…

An Examination of Women Ex-Offenders With Methadone Histories.

Criminal (drug and prostitution) charges, employment levels (weekly hours), recent substance use in the past 6 months, and primary sources of income were examined among a sample ( n = 106) of women ex-offenders who had opioid use disorders with and without methadone histories. A general linear model was tested to examine differences in relation to methadone use history. Results from a one-way MANCOVA found that those with methadone histories reported significantly higher levels of drug and prostitution charges than those without any methadone history, but no significant differences in terms of

Cigar, cigarillo, and little cigar use among current cigarette-smoking adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Cigar, cigarillo, and little cigar (CCLC) use is prevalent among adolescents, particularly among those who smoke cigarettes. METHODS: Using data from a longitudinal study of smoking patterns among adolescents, we examined differences between CCLC users (ever and past 30 days) and nonusers (never and not in the past 30 days) among adolescents who smoked a cigarette in the last month (n = 486). RESULTS: In our sample, 76.7% reported ever trying CCLC and 40.7% reported past month CCLC use. Bivariate analyses showed that CCLC users differed from nonusers in terms of demographics, o

Integrating HIV prevention into substance user treatment: current practices and challenges.

Despite well-organized prevention efforts, HIV continues to spread in the United States. Injection drug users (IDUs) and other substance users who engage in high-risk behaviors are at particularly high risk for contracting HIV. Substance abuse(dagger) counselors therefore are in a unique position to present HIV prevention messages to their clients. This article reports the results of a study that surveyed counselors in an urban setting (n = 116) to assess their knowledge of HIV, their current HIV prevention practices, and their attitudes about integrating HIV prevention more fully into their w

Factors affecting substance abuse treatment completion for women.

Substance abuse by women is considered an individual pathology, and the larger social processes of recovery are seldom explored. This research study examined social factors that influenced completion of an outpatient women-centered substance abuse treatment program. The treatment records of a group of 15 women who completed the program were compared with a group who did not complete the program. More completers had previous life successes in the areas of education, job skills, and employment history. Completers also had fewer children, less involvement with child protective services, and lower

Pneumococcal osteomyelitis and arthritis in children. A hospital series and literature review.

Twenty-nine children with pneumococcal osteomyelitis and/or arthritis, 11 of whom had osteomyelitis, were treated at Cook County Hospital, Chicago, Ill, in the past 20 years. They were mostly normal children with a single focus of infection. They represented more than 5% of the hospitalized children with a systemic pneumococcal infection. Most of the pneumococcal isolates were serotyped; serotype 19, in particular, seemed to be unusually common in these children. Twenty-three of the 29 children with pneumococcal osteomyelitis and/or arthritis had been hospitalized in the past 15 years. These 2…

Distribution of physeal and nonphyseal fractures in 2,650 long-bone fractures in children aged 0-16 years.

The distribution of 2,650 long-bone fractures in children is presented. Fractures involving the humerus, radius, ulna, femur, tibia, and fibula were classified according to Salter and Harris. Growth plate injuries accounted for 30% of fractures. Nonphyseal fractures occurred twice as often in the upper extremity as in the lower extremity. Girls with physeal fractures on the average were 1.5 years younger than boys with the same type of fracture in the same location.

Acute Haemophilus pneumonia in childhood.

In our hospital Haemophilus influenzae type B seems to be a common cause of acute childhood pneumonia. In the past five years, 34 children with acute Haemophilus pneumonia were identified. Although these children generally had an uncomplicated segmental pneumonia associated with a bacteremia, 13 of the children had pneumonia with a pleural effusion. These children with Haemophilus pneumonia represented 18% of the children hospitalized with systemic Haemophilus disease and almost a third of those hospitalized with acute bacterial pneumonia from whom the causal agent was isolated.

Patient experiences of buprenorphine dispensing from a mobile medical unit.

BACKGROUND: Overdose deaths continue to rise within the United States, despite effective treatments such as buprenorphine and methadone for opioid use disorder (OUD). Mobile medical units with the ability to dispense buprenorphine have been developed to engage patients and eliminate barriers to accessing OUD treatment. This study reports survey responses of patients of a mobile medical unit dispensing buprenorphine in areas of Chicago, IL with high overdose rates. METHODS: All patients who were dispensed buprenorphine via the mobile medical unit were invited to participate in a 7-item anonymo…

Affluent-Born White Mother's Descending Neighborhood Income and Infant Mortality: A Population-Based Study.

Objectives To determine whether affluent-born White mother's descending neighborhood income is associated with infant mortality rates (< 365 day, IMR). Methods Stratified and multilevel logistic regression analyses were completed on the Illinois transgenerational dataset of singleton births (1989-1991) to non-Latina White mothers (1956-1976) with an early-life residence in affluent neighborhoods (defined as the fourth quartile of income distribution). The breadth of descending neighborhood income was defined by mother's neighborhood income at the time of delivery. Results Infants of White moth

Unintended Pregnancy, Depression, and Hazardous Drinking in a Community-Based Sample of Sexual Minority Women.

CONTEXT: Unintended pregnancy is a stressful life event with important implications for women's health. Little research has examined sexual minority women's (SMW; lesbian, bisexual, mostly heterosexual) experiences of unintended pregnancy, and no studies have examined the relationship between unintended pregnancy, mental health, and negative coping behaviors in this population. METHODS: We used the Chicago Health and Life Experiences of Women (CHLEW) Study (n = 454), a diverse sample of SMW, to examine the relationship between self-reported unintended pregnancy, depressive symptoms, and hazar…

Modeling minority stress effects on homelessness and health disparities among young men who have sex with men.

Sexual minority youth are more likely to experience homelessness, and homeless sexual minority youth report greater risk for mental health and substance abuse symptoms than homeless heterosexual youth, yet few studies have assessed determinants that help explain the disparities. Minority stress theory proposes that physical and mental health disparities among sexual minority populations may be explained by the stress produced by living in heterosexist social environments characterized by stigma and discrimination directed toward sexual minority persons. We used data from a sample of 200 young

Prevalence of sleep apnea syndrome and high-risk characteristics among keratoconus patients.

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence and risk factors for sleep apnea in a keratoconus population. METHODS: Ninety-two keratoconus patients and 92 controls were classified as high risk or low risk for sleep apnea, using the Berlin Questionnaire (BQ) or individual history of sleep apnea. Logistic regression was used to investigate the risk factors associated with high risk of sleep apnea in keratoconus patients and controls. RESULTS: Of the 92 keratoconus patients, 18 (19.6%) had a positive known history for sleep apnea, and 49 (53.3%) were categorized to be at high risk by the BQ. Of the 92

Correlates of comorbid PTSD and polysubstance use in sexual assault victims.

A diverse sample of community-residing women in a large metropolitan area who had experienced adult sexual assault was surveyed using standardized measures in an NIAAA-funded study (2003-2004). Four groups (N = 503) of victims: (1) post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-only, (2) PTSD and illicit drug use, (3) PTSD and drinking problems, and (4) PTSD and polysubstance use were compared using bivariate analyses. Victims with PTSD/polysubstance use had lower socioeconomic status, more extensive trauma histories, worse current psychological functioning, more problematic post-assault psychosocial e
