Infection with varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in oncology patients can result in severe disease with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality [1, 2]. Among patients on cancer chemotherapy, only nonimmune persons are considered to be susceptible to varicella [1]. We present a case of varicella in a child with leukemia that occurred despite immunity as defined by 2 doses of varicella vaccine and documentation of positive VZV immunoglobulin G titer before initiation of chemotherapy.

Gallbladder perforation is a rare complication of cholecystitis and cholelithiasis. The high morbidity and mortality rates associated with this condition are due to delays in diagnosis and treatment since signs and symptoms of perforation do not differ significantly from those of uncomplicated cholecystitis. We report on a patient who was affected by Child-Pugh A alcoholic liver cirrhosis and who developed an acute gallbladder perforation with spillage of stones into the peritoneal cavity and give a review of the current literature.

In ancient Rome, childbirth was a hazardous event for both mother and child with high rates of infant and maternal mortality. Traditional Roman medicine centred on folklore and religious practices, but with the development of Hippocratic medicine came significant advances in the care of women during pregnancy and confinement. Midwives or obstetrices played an important role and applied rational scientific practices to improve outcomes. This evolution from folklore to obstetrics was a pivotal point in the history of childbirth.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare microbial soft tissue infection characterized by rapidly spreading areas of necrosis and a high mortality rate. It may be of odontogenic or traumatic origin or may arise from insect bites, burns or surgical infections. We present a clinical case of an eight-year-old child with facial and cervical necrotizing fasciitis as a complication of chronic suppurative otitis media. The causes, diagnosis and management of necrotizing fasciitis are reviewed.

Type 3 laryngotracheo-oesophageal clefts are rare congenital anomalies with a high mortality. In the past, transport of such infants to tertiary centres for surgical correction has proved extremely difficult, with the child's ventilatory status often deteriorating to such an extent that ultimate surgical intervention has not proved possible. We describe two cases of successful inter-hospital transfer of infants with type 3 laryngotracheo-oesophageal clefts using the laryngeal mask airway.

OBJECTIVES: Studies about racial disparities in infant mortality suggest that racial differences in socioeconomic position (SEP) and maternal risk behaviors explain some, but not all, excess infant mortality among Blacks relative to non-Hispanic Whites. We examined the contribution of these to disparities in specific causes of infant mortality.
METHODS: We analyzed data about 2,087,191 mother-child dyads in Michigan between 1989 and 2005. First, we calculated crude Black-White infant mortality ratios independently and by specific cause of death. Second, we fit multivariable Poisson regression

The Pneumonia Etiology Research for Child Health (PERCH) study evaluated the etiology of severe and very severe pneumonia in children hospitalized in 7 African and Asian countries. Here, we summarize the highlights of in-depth site-specific etiology analyses published separately in this issue, including how etiology varies by age, mortality status, malnutrition, severity, HIV status, and more. These site-specific results impart important lessons that can inform disease control policy implications.

Isolated tracheobronchial injuries are extremely rare in children and challenging due to life threatening complications. Blunt trauma to chest, especially in pediatric age group, is usually associated with multi-organ involvement and high mortality rate. These patients rarely reach a hospital. We have described here a case of complete transection of right main bronchus in a child, without hilar vascular injury, and its successful management, emphasizing the role of bronchoscopy and thoracoscopy.

The placenta mediated pregnancy complications, including pre-eclampsia, birth of a small for gestational age child, placental abruption or late pregnancy loss, are common and often devastating pregnancy complications leading to important maternal/fetal/neonatal morbidity and mortality. In this narrative review I examine two common questions related to women with prior placenta mediated pregnancy complications. Do thrombophilias cause placenta mediated pregnancy complications? Does low molecular weight heparin prevent recurrent placenta mediated pregnancy complications?

Childhood undernutrition continues to be a major public health problem and one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in developing countries. The risk factors of child undernutrition are diverse and change with time, place, and season. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and associated factors influencing stunting and wasting among children 1 to 5 years of age in the Nkwanta South Municipality, Ghana. This was a health facility-based descriptive cross-sectional study that used a multistage sampling technique to select 240 children 1 to 5 years of age from April to

In emergencies, the maternal and child populations face increased risk of morbidity and mortality, often exacerbated by malnutrition. Breastfeeding, adequate complementary feeding, and appropriate prenatal care can mitigate these risks. This descriptive cross-sectional study compared data collected before and after Hurricane John related to maternal, infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices and the nutritional status of pregnant women and children under two years of age. Data were collected in December 2024 from the two provinces most affected in Guerrero, Mexico. Surveys were completed

Injuries constitute a large share of childhood morbidity and mortality. This study examines whether adolescents with self-reported experiences of different types of child maltreatment more frequently reported unintentional injury events requiring health- or dental care during the last year and/or hospitalization at any time during childhood. Cross-sectional data from a Swedish national representative school survey (2016) including 4741 adolescents were used (78.5% response rate). Data were analyzed with univariate tests and multiple logistic regression. Statistically significant associations b

OBJECTIVE: Congenital heart block (CHB) may develop in fetuses of women with anti-Ro/SSA autoantibodies, and carries substantial morbidity and mortality. The aim was to evaluate how information on CHB is imparted and identify areas of improvement.
METHODS: A questionnaire was distributed to anti-Ro/SSA antibody-positive women who had either participated in a surveillance programme but whose expected child did not develop CHB (n = 100, denoted Doppler-Assessed Pregnancies (DAP) group) or given birth to a child with CHB (n = 88, denoted CHB-Affected Pregnancies (CAP) group).

Fractures and other skeletal injuries are common in childhood. Most are the result of falls, motor vehicle accidents, and other forms of accidental trauma. However, skeletal trauma is present in a significant number of abused children. Age and developmental abilities are key components in raising clinical suspicion for child abuse. Children who are unable to provide their own history because of age or developmental delay require increased attention. Younger children are more likely to have abusive fractures, whereas accidental fractures increase with age and developmental abilities. The conseq

Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhoea in children worldwide and diarrhoeal deaths in children in developing countries. Accelerated development and introduction of rotavirus vaccines into global immunisation programmes has been a high priority for many international agencies, including WHO and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations. Vaccines have been developed that could prevent the enormous morbidity and mortality from rotavirus and their effect should be measurable within 2-3 years. Two live oral rotavirus vaccines have been licensed in many countries; one is der

BACKGROUND: Although Bangladesh has achieved substantial progress in reducing mortality from infectious diseases, child drowning, particularly in the northern regions, remains a neglected public health concern and constitutes the leading cause of death among children aged 1-17 years in rural areas. Approximately 18,268 children (aged 0-17 years) die from drowning annually, equivalent to an average of 50 deaths per day.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify the socio-demographic characteristics of caregivers, the types of child supervision and reasons for its absence, water safety skills, tra

BACKGROUND: Small for gestational age (SGA) has been associated with increased risks of stillbirth and neonatal mortality, but data on long-term childhood mortality are scarce. Maternal antenatal care, including globally reducing the risk of SGA birth, may be key to achieving the Millennium Development Goal of reducing under-5 mortality. We therefore aimed to examine the association between SGA and mortality from 28 days to <18 years using a population-based and a sibling control design.

AIM: We investigated the death circumstances among children in the Danish healthcare system by analysing closed claims.
METHODS: This retrospective study investigated closed claims with regard to medically related deaths registered by the Danish Patient Insurance Association.
RESULTS: From 1996 to 2008, 45 953 claims were made to the Danish Patient Insurance Association (DPIA) covering all medical specialties. Among these claims, a total of 3531 submitted claims were for children younger than 18 years old, and 74 of these children were registered as having died. Forty-one of the 74 deaths we
