The co-occurrence of mental disorders in children and adolescents with intellectual disability/intellectual developmental disorder.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The study summarizes supportive epidemiological data regarding the true co-occurrence (comorbidity) and course of mental disorders in children with intellectual disability/intellectual developmental disorders (ID/IDD) across the lifespan. RECENT FINDINGS: Published studies involving representative populations of children and adolescents with ID/IDD have demonstrated a three to four-fold increase in prevalence of co-occurring mental disorders. The effect of age, sex, and severity (mild, moderate, severe, and profound) and socioeconomic status on prevalence is currently not c

Learning Disabilities in Extremely Low Birth Weight Children and Neurodevelopmental Profiles at Preschool Age.

At school age extremely low birth weight (ELBW) and extremely low gestational age (ELGAN) children are more likely to show Learning Disabilities (LDs) and difficulties in emotional regulation. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of LDs at school age and to detect neurodevelopmental indicators of risk for LDs at preschool ages in a cohort of ELBW/ELGAN children with broadly average intelligence. All consecutively newborns 2001-2006 admitted to the same Institution entered the study. Inclusion criteria were BW < 1000 g and/or GA < 28 weeks. Exclusion criteria were severe cereb

Intellectual disability is associated with increased risk for obesity in a nationally representative sample of U.S. children.

BACKGROUND: Data on obesity prevalence in children with intellectual disability (ID) are scarce. OBJECTIVE: We estimated rates of obesity among children aged 10-17 years with and without ID in a nationally representative dataset that included measures of child weight and ID status, as well as family meal frequency, physical activity, and sedentary behavior. METHODS: Chi-square tests compared prevalence of obesity, demographic and behavioral characteristics between children with and without ID as reported in the 2011 National Survey of Children's Health. Tests for interaction in logistic regr

Changes of musculoskeletal deformity in severely disabled children using the custom molded fitting chair.

OBJECTIVE: To know the effectiveness of a custom molded fitting chair between pre- and post-chair status through comparison of musculoskeletal indices in severely disabled children. METHODS: We researched 34 severely disabled patients who had used a custom molded fitting chair continuously for more than a year. There were 27 cerebral palsy patients and 7 patients with other kinds of diseases that affect the brain such as chromosomal disease or metabolic disease. By radiographic studies, Cobb's angle, the femoral neck-shaft angle of the femur, and Reimers migration percentage were measured. Th

Neuropsychological profile of Italian children and adolescents with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome with and without intellectual disability.

As individuals with chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) show a wide range of IQs, intellectual heterogeneity could mask the neuropsychological profile of the syndrome. This study was designed to identify specific neuropsychological features of children and adolescents with 22q11DS by taking into account the possible source of variability deriving from intellectual disability (ID). First, we compared several neuropsychological domains involving linguistic, visual-motor/visual-perceptual and memory abilities in 34 children and adolescents with 22q11DS and 83 mental age-matched typical

A longitudinal study of kindergarten children at risk for reading disabilities: the poor really are getting poorer.

Over the past decade, educators and researchers concerned about children with reading disabilities have called for widespread adoption of early identification tools and early effective programming. This call may be the result of, in part, what Stanovich calls "Matthew effects in reading." That is, when stakeholders delay identification and support for young children struggling to read, the variance of individual differences in reading will inevitably increase, creating a widening of the gap between strong and struggling readers. In this longitudinal study, reading achievement data from 382 chi

Prevalence of specific learning disabilities among primary school children in a South Indian city.

OBJECTIVE: To measure the prevalence of specific learning disabilities (SpLDs) such as dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia among primary school children in a South Indian city. METHODS: A cross-sectional multi-staged stratified randomized cluster sampling study was conducted among children aged 8-11 years from third and fourth standard. A six level screening approach that commenced with identification of scholastic backwardness followed by stepwise exclusion of impaired vision and hearing, chronic medical conditions and subnormal intelligence was carried out among these children. In the fina

A longitudinal study of speech timing in young children later found to have reading disability.

PURPOSE: This study examined the development of timing characteristics in early spontaneous speech of children who were later identified as having reading disability (RD). METHOD: Child-adult play sessions were recorded longitudinally at 2 and 3 years of age in 27 children, most of whom were at high familial risk for RD. For each speaking turn, the number of syllables was determined and an acoustic analysis measured the time allocated to articulation, pausing before speaking, and pausing during speaking. RESULTS: In grade school, a reading battery identified 9 children with RD and 18 childre

Anxiety sensitivity, fear of pain and pain-related disability in children and adolescents with chronic pain.

BACKGROUND: Converging lines of evidence suggest that anxiety sensitivity and fear of pain may be important vulnerability factors in the development of avoidance behaviours and disability in adults with chronic pain. However, these factors have not been evaluated in children with chronic pain. OBJECTIVES: To examine the relationships among anxiety sensitivity, fear of pain and pain-related disability in children and adolescents with chronic pain. METHODS: An interview and five questionnaires (Childhood Anxiety Sensitivity Index, Pain Anxiety Symptoms Scale, Functional Disability Inventory, M

Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory: its application to children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy.

PURPOSE: A standardized method of measurement of self-care ability in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy (OBPP) has not been universally adopted. A study was conducted to determine if the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI) was able to discriminate between the self-care ability of children with OBPP and their peers and distinguish between those with differing severities of OBPP. METHODS: The PEDI self-care domain results for 45 children with OBPP (30 without hand impairment, 15 with hand impairment) were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: The group performance of c

The rule learning behavior of reading disabled and normal children as a function of task characteristics and instruction.

The purpose of this research was to investigate rule learning in reading disabled (RD) and normal children (chronological age and reading age (RA) match) when required to (a) abstract rules independently, and (b) use rules after instruction. Study 1 required the children to solve problems using shapes and letters. Although there was no difference between groups in the rate of problem solving when children were asked to abstract rules independently, the pattern of errors was different. The RD children made a greater proportion of errors on the negative instance for the more complex problems. In

Negative air ionization improves memory and attention in learning-disabled and mentally retarded children.

The effect of increased concentrations of ambient negative air ions on incidental visual memory for words and purposive auditory memory for dichotic digits was investigated in 20 normal grade 4 children, 8 learning-disabled children, and 8 mildly mentally retarded children. Half in each group were assigned randomly to an unmodified air-placebo condition under double-blind testing procedures. All of the children breathing negatively ionized air were superior in incidental memory. In dichotic listening, the negative ions produced a counter-priming effect in the two learning-impaired groups, offs

Making functional time estimates: comparison of school-aged, learning-disabled and other children.

A time-estimation survey was administered to 266 control children and 72 learning disabled children in Grades 4, 5, and 6. Using a 2 X 3 X 3 analysis of covariance significant main effects for group membership and grade were found. These data indicate that learning disabled youngsters frequently do not estimate time as accurately as normal ones.

The configuration, funding and costs of providing services for children with behaviours that challenge.: A report undertaken as part of the Mapping and Evaluating Services for Children with Learning Disabilities and Behaviours that Challenge (MELD).

BACKGROUND: Children with intellectual disabilities and behaviours that challenge (BtC) and their families require complex, multi-agency support. Despite policy commitments to strengthen community-based provision, including those arising from Transforming Care and the forthcoming Mental Health Bill (2025), there remains limited evidence on how these services are configured or what they cost to deliver. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence ( NICE, 2018) identified major evidence gaps in optimal service design, integration, and cost-effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: This research explo

Latent profiles of depression and post-traumatic growth and their associations with social support and religious participation in mothers of children with developmental disabilities in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Mothers of children with developmental disabilities (DD) experience chronic and cumulative stress, yet many also report positive psychological changes such as post-traumatic growth (PTG). Few studies have examined how depression and PTG co-occur as distinct mental-health patterns or how psychosocial resources influence these profiles. This study identified latent profiles of depression and PTG among Korean mothers of children with DD and examined whether social support and religious participation predicted profile membership. METHOD: A total of 488 mothers of children with DD part
