There are few recent data on the prevalence of substance abuse among Danish pregnant women. During 2013, in the Region of Southern Denmark, a cross-sectional, anonymous, screening-based study was conducted among pregnant women attending for routine ultrasound scan at 12 weeks gestation. The women submitted a urine sample and completed a short questionnaire. Urine samples were tested for opiates, cannabis, benzodiazepines, cocaine, methadone, amphetamine and methamphetamine. Streptococcus suis is an important swine pathogen that causes meningitis, endocarditis, arthritis and septicaemia. As a zoonotic agent, S. suis also causes similar diseases in humans. A cross reactive fraction was isolated from hydatid cyst fluid antigen of E. granulosus using CNBr Sepharose 4B affinity chromatography in which anti-T. spiralis antibodies were coupled with the column. Biochemical characterization of the isolated fraction included the use of SDS-PAGE, isoelectric focusing and amino acid analysis. Lactoferrin from human milk, pancreatic juice and bovine milk were purified by heparin-Sepharose affinity chromatography procedure. Urea-sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of these lactoferrin preparations indicated similar molecular weights (80,000). Human gastric juice was found to contain at least two vitamin B-12 binding substances. One of the proteins which formed a complex with B12 was found to bind to a column containing Sepharose-ConA.
