Oral administration of allergens, foreign proteins, or cell-bound antigens may induce systemic suppression of subsequent humoral and cell-mediated immune responses ("oral tolerance"). The impact of 2,4-dinitrophenol and chlorophenyl dimethylurea on ATP content, carbon fixation, O2 evolution, nitrogenase activity and Cr uptake of Anabaena doliolum has been studied. 2,4-Dinitrophenol has been found to be more toxic than chlorophenyldimethylurea for all these processes. In 15 random autopsies, nickel (Ni) and chromium (Cr) were determined quantitatively by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) in human lung tissue to evaluate norm values. None of the deceased persons had had an occupational exposure to Cr or Ni or their compounds. In all, 22 tissue samples were taken from each lung at specific topographical anatomical locations. In approaching the question as to which test preparations are most suitable for patch testing of metals, 25 chromium sensitive patients were tested with 0.5% potassium dichromate either in water or petrolatum. The aqueous solution proved better than the petrolatum preparation at a 48 h reading with Neodermtest Roc. No difference in sensitivity was recorded between 4 hexavalent chromium salts. 3 patients who were only sensitive to chromium solution in water also reacted positively to a 1% cobalt chloride solution and a 5% nickel sulfate solution in petrolatum.

When cells from the human cell line NHIK3025 were cultured for 4 days, with hexavalent chromium (K2Cr2O7) at a concentration of 8 . 10(-7)M, the relative cell number was reduced to 38%. This effect of hexavalent chromium was abolished if ascorbic acid and chromate were added simultaneously to the incubation medium, but not if ascorbic acid was added 24 h prior to chromate addition.
