Parameter identification based on statistical and neural network approaches for the vegetation-water model.

Turing patterns emerging from the vegetation-water model exhibit complex spatial and networked structures, while parameter identification of these patterns has become a challenging inverse problem. This paper aims to present two types of methods for parameter identification, based on a vegetation-water model coupled with climate data on precipitation, temperature, and carbon dioxide concentration in Zhangye. The statistical approach identifies parameters through handcrafted image feature matching using the distance metric. In addition, the deep learning method is employed for parameter identif

Closed-loop carbon management strategies for climate and energy-resilient India.

Climate change, primarily driven by excessive CO2 emissions, poses urgent global challenges. India contributes over 2,600 Mt CO2 annually, with ∼80% originating from hard-to-abate sectors, such as power, cement, petrochemical, chemical, and steel. This review highlights the importance of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies as critical pathways to align India's growth with climate goals. India prioritizes point-source capture from flue gases, reflecting its concentrated emission profile. Effective carbon management models must generate h

Risk assessment and perspectives of local transmission of chikungunya and dengue in Italy, a European forerunner.

To address the growing frequency, extension, and size of local arboviral outbreaks in Europe we retrospectively analyzed dengue and chikungunya transmission in Italy from 2006 to 2023. We applied generalized additive models to the records of travel-related cases to highlight the spatiotemporal patterns of disease importation, calculated reproduction numbers for six local outbreaks based on autochthonous case data and mapped current transmission risks by applying a computational model that integrates human density, entomological, and climate data. Outbreak locations appear driven by case import

Addressing the rise of autochthonous vector-borne diseases in a warming Europe.

The perspective explores the emergence of autochthonous tropical diseases in Europe, driven by climate change and the associated increase in vector-borne diseases. Rising temperatures, along with changes in humidity and rainfall patterns, have altered the activity, distribution, and diversity of vectors such as mosquitoes and ticks. Species like Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti, which are primary vectors of dengue, have established self-sustaining populations across Europe. This spread has led to a surge in cases of dengue fever, West Nile virus, and tick-borne encephalitis in temperate regi

Likely Geographic Distributional Shifts among Medically Important Tick Species and Tick-Associated Diseases under Climate Change in North America: A Review.

Ticks rank high among arthropod vectors in terms of numbers of infectious agents that they transmit to humans, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Colorado tick fever, human monocytic ehrlichiosis, tularemia, and human granulocytic anaplasmosis. Increasing temperature is suspected to affect tick biting rates and pathogen developmental rates, thereby potentially increasing risk for disease incidence. Tick distributions respond to climate change, but how their geographic ranges will shift in future decades and how those shifts may translate into changes in disease incidence rem

School Cohesion Perception Discrepancy and Student Delinquency.

Research suggests that positive school environments contribute to lower levels of school disorder. Studies have also documented stark differences between how students and personnel perceive their schools. The current study examines such "perception discrepancies" as a meaningful dimension of the school environment, investigating the hypothesis that when students perceive their schools as less cohesive than their teachers, they are more likely to engage in delinquent conduct. The University of Missouri-St. Louis Comprehensive School Safety Initiative (UMSL CSSI) study allows comparisons between

Dirofilarial infections in Europe.

Nematodes of the genus Dirofilaria are currently considered emerging agents of parasitic zoonoses in Europe. Climatic changes and an increase in the movement of reservoirs (mostly infected dogs) have caused an increase in the geographical range of these parasites from the traditionally endemic/hyperendemic southern regions, and the risk for human infection has increased. In the last several years, forecast models have predicted that current summer temperatures are sufficient to facilitate extrinsic incubation of Dirofilaria in many areas of Europe. The global warming projected by the Intergove

Uncertainties in climate assessment for the case of aviation NO.

Nitrogen oxides emitted from aircraft engines alter the chemistry of the atmosphere, perturbing the greenhouse gases methane (CH(4)) and ozone (O(3)). We quantify uncertainties in radiative forcing (RF) due to short-lived increases in O(3), long-lived decreases in CH(4) and O(3), and their net effect, using the ensemble of published models and a factor decomposition of each forcing. The decomposition captures major features of the ensemble, and also shows which processes drive the total uncertainty in several climate metrics. Aviation-specific factors drive most of the uncertainty for the shor

Extreme heat and hospitalization with Parkinson's disease among older adults.

BACKGROUND: The projected rise in U.S. Parkinson's Disease (PD) cases makes understanding risk factors crucial to plan for changing healthcare utilization patterns. Factors such as extreme heat exacerbated by shifts in regional climate conditions may present additional risks among the PD population. OBJECTIVE: We aim to determine whether nationwide and climate region-specific acute heat index exposure is associated with increased rates of hospitalizations with PD among the Medicare population. METHODS: We follow a time-stratified case-crossover study design for a population of Medicare fee-f

Ecological, Social, and Other Environmental Determinants of Dengue Vector Abundance in Urban and Rural Areas of Northeastern Thailand.

Aedes aegypti is the main vector of dengue globally. The variables that influence the abundance of dengue vectors are numerous and complex. This has generated a need to focus on areas at risk of disease transmission, the spatial-temporal distribution of vectors, and the factors that modulate vector abundance. To help guide and improve vector-control efforts, this study identified the ecological, social, and other environmental risk factors that affect the abundance of adult female and immature Ae. aegypti in households in urban and rural areas of northeastern Thailand. A one-year entomological

Modeling heat stress under different environmental conditions.

Renewed interest in heat stress effects on livestock productivity derives from climate change, which is expected to increase temperatures and the frequency of extreme weather events. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of temperature and humidity on milk production in highly selected dairy cattle populations across 3 European regions differing in climate and production systems to detect differences and similarities that can be used to optimize heat stress (HS) effect modeling. Teacher-Student Relationship Quality and Classroom Climate From the Student Perspective: Adaptation of the SPARTS-E in the Spanish Context7.

BACKGROUND: The quality of the affective bond between teachers and their students is recognised as a key determinant of children's socio-emotional adjustment, classroom climate and academic engagement. Spain, however, lacks student-reported measures grounded in attachment theory. This study therefore adapted and validated the Student Perception of Affective Relationship with Teacher Scale (SPARTS) for Spanish primary education and examined its associations with classroom climate and teacher perceptions. METHODS: A forward-back translation and pilot testing produced a 25-item Spanish version (

Rural dengue dynamics: the interplay of climate, built environment, and agriculture in Costa Rica.

Dengue is one of the world's highest-burden arboviral diseases. Although classically considered an urban disease, many regions experience a substantial dengue burden in rural areas. The combined influence of long-term climate, short-term weather variation, local built environments, and land-use gradients on dengue dynamics in rural settings remains poorly understood, limiting our ability to predict shifting risk under global change. Here, we investigate these dynamics in Costa Rica to disentangle how these interacting socio-environmental factors shape rural dengue transmission. We first use 22

Integrating Climate Change and Human Pressure to Identify Conservation Priorities for Threatened Forest Trees in a Southeast Asian Biodiversity Hotspot.

The Indo-China Peninsula is a global biodiversity hotspot harboring a high diversity of endemic evergreen tree species, many of which are increasingly threatened from the combined effects of climate change and anthropogenic pressure; yet their future conservation status remains poorly understood. We used an Ensemble of Small Models (ESM) framework to project current and future climatically suitable habitats for three range-restricted evergreen tree species (Quercus austrocochinchinensis, Q. kingiana, and Q. rex) under CMIP6 scenarios, and integrated projections with the Human Footprint Index a

Comparative Phylogeography of West African Rainforest Frogs Reveals Regional Variation in Refugia Dynamics.

Understanding how species responded to climatic change in the past can help predict the long-term implications of contemporary climate change. The Upper Guinean rainforests of West Africa are a global biodiversity hotspot, and it is well documented that climatic fluctuations in the Pleistocene drove the expansion and contraction of rainforest cover in this region. West African slippery frogs, genus Conraua, are rainforest specialists and present an excellent opportunity to study the effects of climate-driven landscape changes on contemporary phylogeographic patterns and population dynamics. Quantifying the Lagged Effects of Climate Variables on Malaria Risk in Eastern Uganda.

Climate change is anticipated to significantly affect malaria transmission. Previous research has shown lagged, nonlinear associations between climate variables and malaria risk, with highly context-specific exposure-lag-response relationship. Using weekly malaria case data collected between July 2018 and February 2023 from a health facility within the Iganga-Mayuge Health and Demographic Surveillance System site in Uganda and remotely sensed temperature and rainfall data, we quantified the associations between temperature and rainfall and risk of developing symptomatic malaria using a distrib

Seasonal and climatic influence on respiratory infections in children with cystic fibrosis.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) and Methicillin susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) are the predominant bacteria found in the airways of people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF), significantly contributing to lung disease progression. While various factors influencing the initial acquisition (IA) of these pathogens are known, the impact of environmental conditions remains understudied. This epidemiological study assessed the risk of MSSA and Pa initial acquisitions in relation to seasonality and climatic zones among 1,184 French pwCF under 18 years old. The age at IA for Pa (Pa-IA) and MSSA (MSSA-I

Temperature-derived potential for the establishment of phlebotomine sandflies and visceral leishmaniasis in Germany.

Climate change is expected to manifest in the shift of organisms to regions where they were not present in the past, potentially entailing previously unseen biological risks. However, studies evaluating these future trends are scarce. Here, an important group of vectors (sandflies) and the pathogen transmitted (Leishmania infantum complex) causing the infectious disease visceral leishmaniasis is investigated, focussing on potential establishment in Germany during the 21st century. As the most important habitat factor, temperature requirements of pathogen and vector were derived from the litera
