Progress and perspectives on pore-scale flow in methane hydrate reservoirs: Microfluidic and numerical strategies for synergistic CH4 recovery and CO2 sequestration.

Natural gas hydrates, widely distributed in marine and permafrost regions, present a dual-function energy resource combining methane extraction with carbon dioxide sequestration, offering a promising pathway toward clean energy production and climate mitigation. However, the complexity of multiphase flow mechanisms within hydrate-bearing reservoirs presents critical challenges to achieving efficient and stable gas recovery and sequestration. This review examines the pivotal role of pore-scale modeling and microfluidic experiments as essential tools for understanding fluid behaviors and interfa

Re-worlding reproduction as a call to action.

Inspired by decolonial theorist Sabelo Ndlovu-Gatsheni's notion of 'reworlding' and his use of the concept to reconsider Western epistemes and ways of 'being in the world', we argue for the importance of 're-worlding reproduction' in future work on health systems and reproductive health. Current approaches to reproductive health have failed to bring the thriving and wellbeing they once promised to the 'marginalised majority' in the world. Re-worlding reproductive health requires: 1) the decolonisation and Indigenisation of reproductive rights; 2) an ongoing process to contest coloniality and r

The pivotal discovery of a major plant adaptation to a changing climate.

The discovery of the C4 pathway laid the foundations of a revolution in plant biochemistry. The Hatch and Slack paper published in the Biochemical Journal described a specialized pathway of photosynthetic metabolism that minimizes the loss of carbon and nitrogen to maximize efficiency in hot, dry environments. Since that time, there has been an enormous increase in our understanding of the anatomical and biochemical modifications that facilitate C4 photosynthesis in different species. A key feature is the concentration of CO2 in the vicinity of the carboxylating enzyme ribulose-1,5-bisphosphat

Climate warming drives nonlinear shifts in mercury bioavailability and ecological risk in coastal sediments.

Mercury (Hg) contamination poses urgent ecotoxicological concerns for coastal ecosystems, yet the temperature-dependent bioavailability and ecotoxicological risks of different Hg species remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated how warming influences methylmercury (MeHg) and divalent inorganic mercury (InHg, Hg2+) in coastal sediments using diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) to capture labile, bioavailable Hg. DGT provides a dynamic, environmentally relevant measure of Hg accessibility, integrating diffusion, adsorption, and complexation processes that regulate exposure to benthic

Harnessing Selectivity in CO2 Hydrogenation: Mechanistic Descriptors, Data-Driven Catalyst Design, and Sustainability Constraints.

Rising CO2 emissions continue to motivate catalytic strategies that recycle carbon into useful products. In CO2 hydrogenation, environmental relevance depends not only on conversion but on selectivity control and operational stability. The reverse water-gas shift, methanation, methanol synthesis, and C2 + pathways operate within overlapping temperature and pressure windows, where minor changes in catalyst state or reaction conditions can markedly alter product distribution and downstream separation requirements. This review frames CO2 hydrogenation as a selectivity-driven design challenge. Key

Early-mid Holocene Ross Sea extreme wave heights reflect sea ice retreat and ocean-atmosphere interactions.

Antarctic coastal systems preserve valuable records of postglacial environmental change and extreme storm events. On Inexpressible Island, Ross Sea, we integrated geomorphic mapping, boulder measurements, exposure dating, radiocarbon constraints, and hydrodynamic analysis to reconstruct early to mid-Holocene storm-wave activity. Here we show that between approximately 8000 and 5000 years ago, reduced sea-ice cover, expanded open-water fetch, and stronger atmosphere-ocean coupling drove repeated high-energy storms with significant wave heights of 1-3 m during typical events and up to 4-9 m duri

Exploring the use of ground-based remote sensing to identify new particle formation events: A case study in the Beijing area.

New Particle Formation (NPF) is an important process of secondary aerosol production in the atmosphere, which has significant impacts on the Earth's radiation balance, air quality, and climate change. In this study, we develop a method to identify NPF events based on ground-based remote sensing. We propose a proxy to characterize NPF events utilizing ground-based remote sensing of gaseous precursors and aerosol optical depth (AOD). This proxy is applied to identify the NPF events in Beijing in the winter of 2022 and tested by comparison with in-situ observations of aerosol particle number size

Novel light regimes in European forests.

Tree canopies are one of the most recognizable features of forests, providing shelter from external influences to a myriad of species that live within and below the tree foliage. Canopy disturbances are now increasing across European forests, and climate-change-induced drought is a key driver, together with pests and pathogens, storms and fire. These disturbances are opening the canopy and exposing below-canopy biodiversity and functioning to novel light regimes-spatial and temporal characteristics of light distribution at forest floors not found previously. The majority of forest biodiversity

Marginal ice zone dynamics.

For the best part of my entire career, I have focused on the marginal ice zone, abbreviated to MIZ by most sea ice scientists. Defined perfunctorily by the National Snow & Ice Data Center as the part of the seasonal ice zone where waves, swells and other open ocean processes affect the sea ice, the MIZ habitually extends from the ice edge some 100-200 km into the ice pack with morphology that varies dramatically spatially and with time. In general, the Antarctic MIZ is wider than MIZs in the Arctic, recognizing that increases in the ferocity and incidence of storms and the durability of ice du

Physical processes controlling the rifting of Larsen C Ice Shelf, Antarctica, prior to the calving of iceberg A68.

The sudden propagation of a major preexisting rift (full-thickness crack) in late 2016 on the Larsen C Ice Shelf, Antarctica led to the calving of tabular iceberg A68 in July 2017, one of the largest icebergs on record, posing a threat for the stability of the remaining ice shelf. As with other ice shelves, the physical processes that led to the activation of the A68 rift and controlled its propagation have not been elucidated. Here, we model the response of the ice shelf stress balance to ice shelf thinning and thinning of the ice mélange encased in and around preexisting rifts. We find that

Utilization of Deep Eutectic Solvents to Reduce the Release of Hazardous Gases to the Atmosphere: A Critical Review.

The release of certain gases to the atmosphere is controlled in many countries owing to their negative impact on the environment and human health. These gases include carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3). Considering the major contribution of greenhouse gases to global warming and climate change, mitigation of these gases is one of the world's primary challenges. Nevertheless, the commercial processes used to capture these gases suffer from several drawbacks, including the use of volatile solvents, generation of hazardous by

Scrotal insulation and sperm production in the boar.

Seasonal infertility is a limiting factor in boar fertility, and is increasingly important as climate changes. Spermatogenesis in the boar produces 256 spermatozoa per type A1 spermatogonium, but the process is inefficient such that only 10-30% of these potential spermatozoa are actually produced. Heat further impacts spermatogenesis by reducing the number of specific germ cells produced while increasing the fraction of abnormal sperm. Early studies used whole-animal exposure to simulate seasonal exposure to heat under production settings, but this approach is associated with many confounding

Assessing the risk of bovine fasciolosis using linear regression analysis for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Fasciola hepatica is the causative agent of fasciolosis, a disease that triggers a chronic inflammatory process in the liver affecting mainly ruminants and other animals including humans. In Brazil, F. hepatica occurs in larger numbers in the most Southern state of Rio Grande do Sul. The objective of this study was to estimate areas at risk using an eight-year (2002-2010) time series of climatic and environmental variables that best relate to the disease using a linear regression method to municipalities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The positivity index of the disease, which is the rate

Intra-farm risk factors for Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae colonization at weaning age.

The objective of this study was to identify intra-farm risk factors that affected the colonization with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae at weaning age. Three farrow-to-wean farms were visited at least 5 times each. An average of 54 piglets were sampled at each visit and assayed by means of real-time PCR in nasal swabs. The proportion of PCR positive piglets was evaluated as a response to several variables including dam's PCR status, piglet serological status, and local climatic conditions during the lactation period, as well as other factors. All piglets at weaning age were negative to M. hyopneumoni

Effect of growth hormone in experimental tooth movement.

The aim of this study was to evaluate, by histological analysis, the effect of growth hormone (GH) on periodontal ligament and alveolar bone during experimental tooth movement in rats. Eighty male Wistar rats divided into control (C) and experimental (E) groups were examined after 3, 7, 14 and 21 days under controlled climate conditions. Orthodontic force (30 cN) was applied on the maxillary first molar by an orthodontic appliance. Group E received 0.1 IU/kg/day of GH and Group C received 0.5 mL/kg/day of saline. The samples were processed and evaluated under optical microscopy and polarized l

Volumetrics of CO2 storage in deep saline formations.

Concern about the role of greenhouse gases in global climate change has generated interest in sequestering CO(2) from fossil-fuel combustion in deep saline formations. Pore space in these formations is initially filled with brine, and space to accommodate injected CO(2) must be generated by displacing brine, and to a lesser extent by compression of brine and rock. The formation volume required to store a given mass of CO(2) depends on the storage mechanism. We compare the equilibrium volumetric requirements of three end-member processes: CO(2) stored as a supercritical fluid (structural or str

A stochastic model for ecological systems with strong nonlinear response to environmental drivers: application to two water-borne diseases.

Ecological systems with threshold behaviour show drastic shifts in population abundance or species diversity in response to small variation in critical parameters. Examples of threshold behaviour arise in resource competition theory, epidemiological theory and environmentally driven population dynamics, to name a few. Although expected from theory, thresholds may be difficult to detect in real datasets due to stochasticity, finite population size and confounding effects that soften the observed shifts and introduce variability in the data. Here, we propose a modelling framework for threshold r

Pupils with special needs: a Scottish perspective.

The distinction between ordinary and special schooling in Scotland was effectively erased by the Education (Scotland) Act of 1981. This Act recognizes that any pupil who requires extra support to succeed in a regular classroom is a child who has special education needs. Presently, all pupils who, for whatever reason, do not cope successfully at school are collectively referred to as children with learning difficulties. The term "learning difficulties" reflects a broader spectrum of problems than those characteristically found in the category of learning disabilities used in the United States.

Phytoplankton Cell Death Under the Global Change Scenario.

Phytoplankton are aquatic unicellular eukaryotic (i.e. protists) or prokaryotic photosynthetic organisms thriving in the world oceans. They are at the base of aquatic food webs and play a key role in determining the effects of the environmental change on the ocean surface. Phytoplankton are responsible for around 50% of the net amount of carbon assimilated annually by photoautotrophs. The removal of atmospheric CO2 does not only depend on CO2 fixation, but long-term carbon sequestration also requires the export of the organic matter fixed by phytoplankton in the surface layer (euphotic zone) i

Governance and planning in a 'perfect storm': Securitising climate change, migration and Covid-19 in Sweden.

The article describes and reflects upon how multi-level governance and planning in Sweden have been affected by and reacted upon three pending major challenges confronting humanity, namely climate change, migration and the Covid-19 pandemic. These 'crises' are broadly considered 'existential threats' in need of 'securitisation'. Causes and adequate reactions are contested, and there are no given solutions how to securitise the perceived threats, neither one by one, no less together. Government securitisation strategies are challenged by counter-securitisation demands, and plaguing vulnerable g
