Hypoxia causes mitochondrial dysfunction and brain memory disorder in a manner mediated by the reduction of Cirbp.

Environmental hypoxic hazard has increasingly become a global public health issue, with impelling evidences supporting the relation between hypoxia and cognitive disorders. As a potent stressor, hypoxia causes mitochondrial dysfunction with insufficient energy production, thus the formation of brain memory disorder. Yet, the underlying molecular mechanism/s against hypoxia induced injury have yet to be identified. Here, we report that cold inducible RNA binding protein (Cirbp) attenuates hypoxia induced insufficient energy production and oxidative stress. Further analyses show that Cirbp susta

Abdominal Aortic Dissection and Cold-Intolerance After Whole-Body Cryotherapy: A Case Report.

Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) involves short exposures to air temperatures below -100°C and is purported to enhance recovery after exercise and accelerate rehabilitation after injury. It is generally considered a procedure with few side effects, but there are no large studies that have established its safety profile. We present the case of a 56-year-old patient who developed an abdominal aortic dissection after receiving 15 sessions of WBC. The patient had no other strong risk factors for aortic dissection. Exposure to cold temperatures, including WBC, has multiple hemodynamic effects, includin

Postpolio syndrome and cardiopulmonary conditioning.

Postpolio syndrome is a group of related signs and symptoms occurring in people who had paralytic poliomyelitis years earlier. New weakness, fatigue, poor endurance, pain, reduced mobility, increased breathing difficulty, intolerance to cold, and sleep disturbance in various degrees and expressions make up the syndrome. The reported incidence is between 25% and 80%. The origins are multifactorial and can be associated with underexertion, overexertion, inactivity due to intercurrent illness or injury, hypo-oxygenation, sleep apnea, deconditioning, and the failure of sprouted, compensatory large

Cold Scissors and Small Myotomy: A Laparoscopic Intracapsular Myomectomy Method for Women in Reproductive Age.

OBJECTIVES: Authors evaluated the surgical outcomes of the "cold scissors" technique, focusing on minimal myotomy, during laparoscopic intracapsular myomectomies. The primary endpoints included the initial and final lengths of the uterine incision, as well as the duration of wound healing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The prospective observational cohort study was conducted from May 2017 to June 2022 on patients diagnosed with intramural fibroids (FIGO classifications 4-6), with fibroid sizes ranging from 4 to 10 cm in diameter. The mean initial uterine incision length was compared to that at the c

Normothermic machine perfusion versus static cold storage in donation after circulatory death kidney transplantation: a randomized controlled trial.

Kidney transplantation is the optimal treatment for end-stage renal disease, but it is still severely limited by a lack of suitable organ donors. Kidneys from donation after circulatory death (DCD) donors have been used to increase transplant rates, but these organs are susceptible to cold ischemic injury in the storage period before transplantation, the clinical consequence of which is high rates of delayed graft function (DGF). Normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) is an emerging technique that circulates a warmed, oxygenated red-cell-based perfusate through the kidney to maintain near-physio

Concordance between the Stockholm Workshop Scale and the International Consensus Criteria for grading the severity of neurosensory manifestations in hand-arm vibration syndrome in a Swedish clinical setting.

OBJECTIVES: Occupational exposure to vibration using hand-held tools may cause hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Correct diagnosis and grading of severity are crucial in protecting the individual's health and for workers' compensation claims. The International Consensus Criteria (ICC) has been suggested to replace the widely used Stockholm Workshop Scale (SWS). The aims were to, in a clinical setting, assess the concordance between the SWS and the ICC neurosensory severity grading of vibration injury, and to present the clinical picture according to symptoms, type of affected nerve fibres an

Graft preservation in heart transplantation: current approaches.

Heart transplantation (HTx) represents the current best surgical treatment for patients affected by end-stage heart failure. However, with the improvement of medical and interventional therapies, the population of HTx candidates is increasingly old and at high-risk for mortality and complications. Moreover, the use of "extended donor criteria" to deal with the shortage of donors could increase the risk of worse outcomes after HTx. In this setting, the strategy of donor organ preservation could significantly affect HTx results. The most widely used technique for donor organ preservation is stat

A Potential Route to Reduce Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in Organ Preservation.

The pathophysiological process of ischemia and reperfusion injury (IRI), an inevitable step in organ transplantation, causes important biochemical and structural changes that can result in serious organ damage. IRI is relevant for early graft dysfunction and graft survival. Today, in a global context of organ shortages, most organs come from extended criteria donors (ECDs), which are more sensitive to IRI. The main objective of organ preservation solutions is to protect against IRI through the application of specific, nonphysiological components, under conditions of no blood or oxygen, and the

Technical characteristics and quality of grafts in liver procurement from brain-dead donors: A single-center study in Vietnamese population.

INTRODUCTION: Donor liver graft quality plays an especially important role that contributes to the success of organ transplantation. Almost all local and international authors are interested in the techniques and results of transplantation, however, in Vietnam, there have not been any studies that report the results of liver procurement from brain-dead donors from a technical perspective as well as the morphology and function of the transplanted organ. MATERIALS AND METHOD: This study is descriptive cross-section study with analysis of retrospective occurrences of a series of cases of liver p

TFOS DEWS II pain and sensation report.

Pain associated with mechanical, chemical, and thermal heat stimulation of the ocular surface is mediated by trigeminal ganglion neurons, while cold thermoreceptors detect wetness and reflexly maintain basal tear production and blinking rate. These neurons project into two regions of the trigeminal brain stem nuclear complex: ViVc, activated by changes in the moisture of the ocular surface and VcC1, mediating sensory-discriminative aspects of ocular pain and reflex blinking. ViVc ocular neurons project to brain regions that control lacrimation and spontaneous blinking and to the sensory thalam

Disease-dependent mechanisms of albuminuria.

Body temperature drops dramatically during hibernation, but the heart retains the ability to contract and is resistant to induction of arrhythmia. Although adaptive changes in the heart prior to hibernation may be involved in the cold-resistant property, it remains unclear whether these changes are sufficient for maintaining cardiac pulsatility under an extreme hypothermic condition. We forcibly induced hypothermia in Syrian hamsters by pentobarbital anesthesia combined with cooling of the animals. This allows reproduction of a hypothermic condition in the absence of possible hibernation-speci

Modulation of melanocortin-induced changes in spinal nociception by mu-opioid receptor agonist and antagonist in neuropathic rats.

Co-localization of opioid and melanocortin receptor expression, especially at the spinal cord level in the dorsal horn and in the gray matter surrounding the central canal led to the suggestion that melanocortins might play a role in nociceptive processes. In the present studies, we aimed to determine the effects of melanocortins, administered intrathecally, on allodynia, and to ascertain whether there is an interaction between opioid and melanocortin systems at the spinal cord level. Neuropathic pain was induced by chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the right sciatic nerve in rats. Tactile

Ectasias and varices of the vocal fold: clearing the striking zone.

Vascular malformations such as ectasias and varices (Es and Vs) are frequently encountered in patients who present with recurrent vocal fold hemorrhage and/or other traumatic vocal fold lesions. This study examined Es and Vs with regard to their anatomic presentation, phonomicrosurgical management, and treatment outcome. Forty-two patients (39 of them singers) were treated for a total of 87 Es and Vs: 67 of 87 (77%) were on the superior surface of the vocal fold and 20 of 87 (23%) were on the medial surface of the vocal fold. Eighty-three percent were located in the middle musculomembranous re

Morphological plasticity induced in the phrenic nucleus following cervical cold block of descending respiratory drive.

Morphological plasticity occurs in the phrenic nucleus within hours following an ipsilateral C2 spinal cord hemisection. The plasticity has been associated with the unmasking of a latent respiratory pathway (the crossed phrenic pathway) which allows recovery of the hemidiaphragm paralyzed by the hemisection during a reflex known as the crossed phrenic phenomenon. This study tests if the plasticity is induced by the generalized effects of spinal cord trauma or the more specific effect of interrupting the main descending respiratory drive to phrenic motoneurons. Electron microscopic quantitative

TWIK-1 plays distinct roles in spinal and peripheral sensory circuits controlling mechanical sensitivity and neuropathic hypersensitivity.

Ion channels are essential for sensing somatic stimuli, and their dysregulation can cause chronic conditions such as neuropathic pain. Although the potassium channel Twik-1 has been linked to sensory processing, its specific roles in the somatosensory system under normal and disease conditions remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that systemic deletion of Twik-1 selectively reduces innocuous tactile and noxious mechanosensation evoked by both static and dynamic mechanical stimuli and facilitates recovery from mechanical hypersensitivity after peripheral nerve injury. Conditional deletion of Tw

Lessons from the use of in vivo cellular calcium imaging in primary sensory neurons and spinal cord.

Primary somatosensory neurons, glial cells in the peripheral ganglia, and neural circuits in the spinal cord function as dynamic network circuits that transmit information to the brain. Although a variety of methods and techniques have been used to study individual neurons or tissue explants, the number of neurons that can be monitored is limited. Imaging intact primary sensory neurons, such as those in the dorsal root ganglion and trigeminal ganglia, and the spinal cord in vivo using fluorescent calcium markers helps overcome the limitations of previous methods and techniques by allowing rese

Application of Methyl Jasmonate to Papaya Fruit Stored at Lower Temperature Attenuates Chilling Injury and Enhances the Antioxidant System to Maintain Quality.

Papaya fruit has a limited shelf life due to its sensitivity to decay and chilling damage during cold storage. The application of methyl jasmonate (MeJA) is known to reduce the incidence of disease and chilling injury, and to maintain the overall quality of the papaya fruit when stored at low temperature. Consequently, the effects of postharvest MeJA (1 mM) immersion on papaya fruits during low-temperature storage (10 °C ± 2 °C) for 28 days were studied. The experiment revealed that MeJA treatment significantly decreased the papaya fruit's weight loss, disease incidence, and chilling injury in

Different strains and substrains of rats show different levels of neuropathic pain behaviors.

This study compared and contrasted the manifestation of neuropathic pain behaviors in several strains of rats. These included ACI, Brown-Norway, Fischer 344, Lewis, Long-Evans, Sprague-Dawley, and Wistar-Furth, all obtained from Harlan Sprague-Dawley Inc. Comparison was also made between two substrains of Sprague-Dawley rats: one from Harlan and the other from Sasco. Neuropathic injury was produced by tightly ligating the left L5 and L6 spinal nerves with the animals under halothane anesthesia. Tests were conducted for 2 weeks to examine behavioral signs representing mechanical allodynia, cold

[Revascularization and reimplantation of the upper extremity. 15-year-experience with 114 cases].

Progress in micro or macro replantation has resulted in higher survival rates of formerly amputated parts. More amputated digits or limbs survive because the time of ischemia can be exceeded by using cold storage or perfusion. Homo or heterodigital vessel transposition, expanded indications for vein graft interposition, as well as heterotopic transplantation allow for extremity preservation even in crush injuries, and in disastrous multiple amputations combined with contusion or avulsion. Secondary reconstruction with regard to bone defects, tendon repair, and eventual nerve grafting have to b
