Forty-eight residents of a therapeutic community took part in a prospective study aimed at assessing overall outcome and which components of the program were most helpful. All subjects had a DSM-III-R axis II diagnosis, usually borderline personality disorder (N = 34). As well, subjects had a mean of 1.3 axis I diagnoses, underlining the severity of their psychiatric disorders. Significant symptom reduction on the Brief Symptom Inventory occurred at discharge after a mean stay of 64 days, with further significant falls at three month follow-up. We conducted a pilot study to test rapid assessment procedures for the community diagnosis of lymphatic filariasis in some rural communities in Ghana. Today's society is faced with numerous, escalating problems like homelessness, drug addictions, and violence, and some of these problems may be related to a declining sense of community. In this article, we trace some of the historical reasons that account for why many individuals no longer have a strong sense of community. Example are provided of the development of communities that provide members with a sense of connectedness and cohesion. We believe that community building represents a promising direction for the field of community psychology.

The communication between the auriculotemporal and the facial nerves, i.e. the communicating auriculotemporal nerves (CATN), was studied in 55 facial sides from Thai cadavers. CATN only joined the temporofacial (upper) division of the facial nerve. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to estimate the prevalence and investigate the comorbidity and potential consequences of DSM-III personality disorders in the community.
METHOD: A total of 810 adults were examined in the second stage of the Eastern Baltimore Mental Health Survey in 1981, part of the National Institute of Mental Health Epidemiologic Catchment Area program. OBJECTIVE: To identify predictors of nonresponse in a community survey of cognitive status in the elderly.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional community survey with two stages of recruitment: an initial, less-intensive method, followed by a more aggressive approach that included face-to-face contact. Characteristics of initial nonresponders and responders were compared.
SETTING: A close-knit rural community with higher than usual proportions of elderly, especially the very old. Subjects were interviewed in their homes. Collateral informants were subsequently interviewed by telephone.

We report four patients with primary hypothyroidism (3 female, aged 47, 46, 49 and 34 years old) whose principal manifestation was muscle involvement. The diagnosis was oriented by the finding of myoedema and a slow relaxation phase of tendon reflexes. In one patient, an electromyographic and histological study was performed. Thyroid substitution lead to an improvement in myopathy in all patients.
