Effect of heat-killed Lacticaseibacillus paracasei KW3110 on mild to moderate seasonal allergic rhinitis symptoms in Japanese adults: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel-group study.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the prevalence of seasonal allergic rhinitis has increased rapidly in Japan, becoming a social problem. Therefore, we evaluated the effect of tablets containing Lacticaseibacillus paracasei KW3110 (L. paracasei KW3110) on allergic symptoms in the nose and eyes. METHODS: In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study, 120 healthy adults with mild to moderate allergic rhinitis ingested either a placebo tablet or a test tablet containing L. paracasei KW3110 for 12 weeks (from January to April). Subjects who did not regularly use medication an

Epidemiology and risk of juvenile idiopathic arthritis among children with allergic diseases: a nationwide population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological research reveals that the incidence of allergic diseases and that of autoimmune diseases have been increasing in parallel, raising an interest in a potential link between the two disorders. However, the relationship between Th2-mediated allergic disease and Th1-mediated juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) remains unclear. This population-based case-control study was aimed at investigating the development of childhood-onset allergic diseases and the subsequent risks of JIA. METHODS: We included 329 children with JIA diagnosed between 2000 and 2008, and 1316 age- and

[Basic immunology and current therapeutic concepts in ocular allergy].

BACKGROUND: Ocular allergy belongs to the most common ocular diseases globally. Following clinical phenotype and immunopathogenesis different forms of allergy are distinguished, which require different forms of therapeutic approach. This manuscript reviews the basic immunological processes involved in the development of ocular allergies and current and future therapeutic approaches. METHODS: Results of a literature search in PubMed and our own clinical and experimental experience are presented. RESULTS: In the immunopathogenesis of ocular allergy different immune cells such as dendritic cell

Omalizumab for severe atopic keratoconjunctivitis.

A 35-year-old patient received omalizumab (300 mg twice a month) for 2 years for a severe atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) in order to reduce the risk for steroid-induced keratitis. After 4 months, quality of life and ocular symptoms improved, and the use of oral steroids was strongly reduced. The treatment was well tolerated. This observation suggests that omalizumab may be a good option for the treatment of severe AKC, especially to avoid side effects of immunosuppressive treatments, as suggested for other allergic diseases. Specific trials should be designed for allergic eye diseases.

[Contact allergy in the mouth].

Contact allergy is not frequently seen in the oral mucosa. Oral lichenoid reactions in conjunction with dental restorations, particularly amalgam fillings, are among the most common affections. Subjective symptoms such as burning mouth syndrome, could have an allergic component, but the etiology is unclear and complex. Food additives and oral hygiene products can cause oral lesions of allergic nature. Patch testing is the routine diagnostic tool used by dermatologists, though the interpretation of the clinical relevance is crucial.

History of pollutant adjuvants in respiratory allergy.

Combined exposures to allergens and air pollutants emerged as a topic of concern in scientific circles by the 1980's, when it became clear that parallel increases in respiratory allergies and traffic-related air pollution had been occurring during the 20th century. Although historically there has been a tendency to treat exposure-related symptoms as either allergic or toxicologic in nature, cross-interactions have since been established between the two modalities. For example, exposure to selected air pollutants in concert with a given allergen can increase the likelihood that an individual wi

How molecular allergology can shape the management of allergic airways diseases.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In allergy, personalized medicine passes through the assessment of molecular allergens sensitization profiles. Such technique may help to better diagnose and treat patients suffering from allergic respiratory diseases. RECENT FINDINGS: Different laboratory tests are available today to assess sensitization to molecular allergens, from singleplex assays, to unspecific, screening multiplex assays, mainly performed through microarrays or macroarrays. It is important to collect both results from specific IgE toward allergen extracts and toward molecular allergens, to collect the

An update on the management of hay fever in adults.

Allergic rhinitis is a common disorder occurring in about one in four people in Britain with a peak onset during adolescence.1-3 Although not necessarily a serious illness, it can adversely affect quality of life and disrupt normal activities, and is a risk factor for asthma.2,3 The symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis/rhino-conjunctivitis caused by an IgE-mediated type 1 hypersensitivity reaction to airborne allergens, particularly pollens, and which typically occur between spring and autumn are commonly referred to as hay fever.3 There are a number of management options available including

Antiallergic effects of pigments isolated from green sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) shells.

This study was undertaken to evaluate possible antiallergic effects of an extract of pigments from green sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) shells. Effects were studied on animal models - guinea pig ileum contraction, rabbit eyes allergic conjunctivitis, and rabbit local skin irritation. The extract significantly reduced, in a dose-dependent manner, the histamine-induced contractions of the isolated guinea pig ileum with ID50 =1.2 µg/mL (in equivalents of spinochrome B), had an inhibitory effect on the model of ocular allergic inflammation surpassing the reference drug olopatadine,

A specific CCR3 chemokine receptor antagonist inhibits both early and late phase allergic inflammation in the conjunctiva.

Allergic inflammation manifests as one of a number of diseases, including asthma, dermatitis, food allergy, vernal keratoconjunctivitis, and systemic anaphylaxis. Together these diseases affect nearly 25% of the Western world and are a leading health-care problem. The diseases are often biphasic, with an early phase driven primarily by mast cell degranulation and a late phase characterized by leukocyte recruitment. While chemokines are well known to be critical for leukocyte recruitment, their importance in early-phase reactions is poorly defined. We show here that administration of a single o

The impact of allergen exposure and specific immunotherapy on circulating blood cells in allergic rhinitis.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is an IgE-mediated inflammatory disease of the nasal mucosa with well described local immune responses during allergen exposure. The frequent association of AR with general extra-nasal symptoms and other allergic conditions, such as conjunctivitis and asthma, however, support a more systemic disease impact. In addition to acute elevation of soluble inflammatory mediators in periphery blood, a growing number of studies have reported changes in circulating blood cells after specific nasal allergen challenge or environmental allergen exposure. These findings imply an involv

[Measurement of total IgE in tears : the adaptation of an immunoenzyme technique and the value of investigating locally produced IgE in the diagnosis of chronic conjunctivitis].

The measurement of total IgE in tears could be useful to confirm the diagnosis of allergic conjunctivitis, particularly in chronic forms when the etiology is difficult to determine solely on clinical criteria and allergologic anamnesis. Since the level of IgE is normally very low in tears, the adaptation of a fluorescent enzyme immunoassay of total IgE (Unicap, Pharmacia-Upjohn) reduces the detection limit from 0.35 to 0.15 kU/l. Satisfactory results are obtained for accuracy, within-run precision (CV < 5%) and between-run precision (CV < or =11%). During allergic reactions, the local synthesi

Astemizole. A review of its pharmacodynamic properties and therapeutic efficacy.

Astemizole is an H1-histamine receptor antagonist with a long duration of action permitting once daily administration. Its efficacy in seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis has been convincingly demonstrated, and several comparative studies suggest that astemizole is at least as effective as some other H1-histamine receptor antagonists. A few smaller studies have shown beneficial effects on the symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis and chronic urticaria (but not atopic dermatitis). While astemizole appears to share with other H1-histamine receptor antagonists a tendency to increase appetite a
