Effect of the mind diet on fatigue, quality of life and brain fog in patients with multiple sclerosis: study protocol for a parallel-group randomised controlled trial.

Multiple sclerosis (MS), known to affect many individuals, can often lead to symptoms such as fatigue, cognitive impairment and depression, thereby adversely affecting quality of life. Therefore, the aim of this planned single-centre, randomised controlled trial is to determine the effects of implementing the MIND diet or a standard diet program on quality of life, fatigue, cognition and brain fog symptoms in patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS). The study will include sixty-two adult RRMS patients living in Muğla, Türkiye. Eligible patients who agree to participate will be randomly ass

Nintedanib in the prevention of radiation-induced lung injury in patients with unresectable stage II-III NSCLC: A protocol for a randomized, multicenter, control group study.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) is a common and dose-limiting complication in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) receiving radiotherapy, especially in combination with chemotherapy and/or immunotherapy. RILI encompasses acute radiation pneumonitis (RP) and chronic pulmonary fibrosis, significantly impacting patients' quality of life and treatment outcomes. Preclinical and clinical evidence suggests that nintedanib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor approved for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), may have preventive effects against RILI due to shared fibrotic pathways

Short-term effects of group-based nutritional education on nutritional adherence and glycaemic control in outpatients with type 2 diabetes: a randomised clinical trial.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of incorporating group-based nutritional education into usual care on adherence to nutritional counselling among outpatients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). This parallel-group, randomised controlled superiority trial was conducted with outpatients diagnosed with T2DM and poor glycaemic control. The control group received individual usual care, while the intervention group received usual care plus group-based nutritional education, which included three sessions: 'Let's Go Shopping,' 'Healthy Plate' and 'Hunger and Satiety.' Baseline and four-

Effects of passive blood-flow-restriction and electromyostimulation on ICU-acquired weakness (ICUAW): a study protocol for a randomized-controlled, parallel-group clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care unit-acquired weakness (ICUAW) is a prevalent secondary disorder in critically ill patients, characterized by significant loss of muscle mass and strength, often leading to prolonged ICU stays, increased mortality, and reduced post-discharge quality of life. Despite guidelines recommending early mobilization, logistical challenges and inconclusive efficacy have limited its impact on ICUAW prevalence. This study aims to assess the feasibility, safety, and clinical efficacy of exclusively passive physiotherapeutic interventions, including blood flow restriction/ischemi

Radiotherapy Increases Carotid Intima-Media Thickness in Patients with Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Compared to a Healthy Control Group: A 6-Year Follow-Up Study.

Background/Objective: Vascular abnormalities are the primary histological changes in individuals undergoing radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). We sought to validate the hypothesis that the duration post-radiotherapy is linked to the progression of carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and further explored its connection with mortality. Methods: Twenty-nine NPC patients who underwent radiotherapy and seventeen healthy controls were examined by carotid ultrasound for measurement of IMT and carotid plaque score at the common carotid artery (CCA), carotid bifurcation, and internal car

Interpersonal vs. supportive group psychotherapy for depression attributed to work stress: study protocol of the multicentre, cluster-randomised, controlled IPT-Work trial.

BACKGROUND: Depression associated with occupational stress is highly prevalent, causing high rates of sick leave and thus posing significant societal and economic burden. Meta-analyses of the few studies on psychological and work-focused interventions for common mental disorders including depression report small effects on depressive symptomatology and occupational outcomes. There is an urgent need for more controlled studies on work-directed interventions assessing work outcomes. METHODS: This is an interventional, multicentre, active-controlled, cluster-randomised, observer-blinded clinical

A Brief Web-Based Person-Centered Care Group Training Program for the Management of Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial in Spain.

BACKGROUND: Shared decision-making (SDM) is a crucial aspect of patient-centered care. While several SDM training programs for health care professionals have been developed, evaluation of their effectiveness is scarce, especially in mental health disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the feasibility and impact of a brief training program on the attitudes toward SDM among primary care professionals who attend to patients with generalized anxiety disorder. METHODS: A feasibility randomized controlled trial was conducted. Health care professionals

Group Acceptance and Commitment Therapy versus Cognitive Behavioral Therapy/Exposure Response Prevention for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: A Block Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) may be as effective for treating obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) as the gold standard treatment, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with exposure response prevention (ERP), but ACT has never been directly compared to CBT/ERP in a randomized control trial. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of group-based ACT and CBT/ERP in two outpatient mental health service clinics for adults with OCD. METHODS: A total of 176 patients with OCD participated in a single-blinded, non-inferiority, block randomized controlled trial (RCT). Patients w

Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial of a group-adapted Somatic Experiencing® intervention for Indonesian women survivors of sexual assault with PTSD symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Sexual assault affects 35.6% of women globally. In Indonesia, 1 in 3 women aged 15-64 have experienced physical and/or sexual assault. This often leads to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related symptoms. The standard PTSD treatments have cultural and resource limitations, which emphasize the need for a culturally adapted intervention. Somatic Experiencing® (SE)®, a body-oriented trauma therapy, has shown promise in reducing PTSD symptoms across diverse populations, but its cultural applicability and effectiveness in Indonesia remain under-investigated. This study address

Effectiveness of pericapsular nerve group block for hip fracture pain management in the emergency department: results of the ED-PENG-B randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Hip fractures (HFs) managed in the emergency department (ED) are associated with severe pain. Locoregional anaesthesia (LRA) using the pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block may be an effective option for pain management in the ED, helping to reduce morphine use and improve postoperative rehabilitation. METHODS: Patients admitted to the ED of a French tertiary hospital with suspected HF were enrolled and randomised into two groups: a standard of care (SOC) group receiving systemic analgesia in line with current recommendations, and an experimental group receiving systemic analgesia

Satisfactory perioperative management for hip arthroscopy with small local pericapsular nerve group block: a single-center, double-blind, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Current analgesic options for hip arthroscopy include fascia iliaca block and peripheral nerve block of the hip. Although the latter provides effective analgesia with reduced motor impairment compared with the fascia iliaca approach, motor blockade still occurs in ≥ 25% of patients. This study aimed to investigate whether administering low-volume local anesthetic for peripheral nerve blockade in the hip reduces the incidence of postoperative quadriceps weakness while maintaining adequate pain control. METHODS: A total of 90 patients who underwent hip arthroscopy were randomly assi

Mothers and Babies Virtual Group (MBVG) for perinatal Latina women: study protocol for a hybrid type-1 effectiveness-implementation randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Immigrant Latinas (who are foreign-born but now reside in the USA) are at greater risk for developing postpartum depression than the general perinatal population, but many face barriers to treatment. To address these barriers, we adapted the Mothers and Babies Course-an evidence-based intervention for postpartum depression prevention-to a virtual group format. Additional adaptations are inclusion of tailored supplemental child health content and nutrition benefit assistance. We are partnering with Early Learning Centers (ELC) across the state of Maryland to deliver and test the ada

Enhanced peer-group strategies to support the prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission leads to increased retention in care in Uganda: A randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the scale-up of Option B+, long-term retention of women in HIV care during pregnancy and the postpartum period remains an important challenge. We compared adherence to clinic appointments and antiretroviral therapy (ART) at 6 weeks, 6, and and 24 months postpartum among pregnant women living with HIV and initiating Option B+. Women were randomized to a peer group support, community-based drug distribution and income-generating intervention called "Friends for Life Circles" (FLCs) versus the standard of care (SOC). Our secondary outcome was infant HIV status and HIV-free s

A transdiagnostic group exercise intervention for mental health outpatients in Germany (ImPuls): results of a pragmatic, multisite, block-randomised, phase 3 controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Globally, mental health conditions pose a substantial burden of disease. Despite the availability of evidence-based pharmacological and psychological treatments, the symptoms of a substantial subgroup of patients do not respond to these interventions, and only a minority of patients have access to them. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of ImPuls, a 6-month transdiagnostic group exercise intervention, plus treatment-as-usual, compared with treatment-as-usual alone in outpatients with various mental disorders. METHODS: In this pragmatic, two-arm, multisite, randomised control

A randomized controlled trial of a brief motivational interviewing-based group intervention for emerging adults experiencing homelessness: 24-month effects on alcohol use.

OBJECTIVE: Despite rates of alcohol misuse being higher among emerging adults experiencing homelessness compared to those who are stably housed, there are few brief evidence-based risk reduction programs for this population that focus on alcohol use and assess outcomes for more than 1 year. This study examines alcohol outcomes from a 24-month evaluation of AWARE, a brief motivational interviewing-based group risk reduction intervention for emerging adults experiencing homelessness. METHOD: In a cluster randomized crossover trial, 18- to 25- year-olds received AWARE (n = 132) or standard care

Olfactory disorders in childhood: A comparative study of olfaction in children with adenoid hyperplasia versus a control group and the postoperative effects of adenoidectomy with respect to olfactory ability.

PURPOSE: Hyposmia in childhood is poorly characterized. The "U-Sniff Test", validated for children with anosmia, can be used to objectify olfactory impairment but has not been used to distinguish between hyposmia and normosmia. Therefore, we investigated children with enlarged adenoids with respect to hyposmia, its correlation with adenoid size, and the sensitivity of questionnaires to predict olfactory impairment. METHODS: In a prospective comparison, olfaction was assessed by "U-Sniff Test" (score 0-12; <8 hyposmia) in 41 children (5-18 years) with adenoid hyperplasia and compared with 196

Feasibility of a multidisciplinary group videoconferencing approach for chronic low back pain: a randomized, open-label, controlled, pilot clinical trial (EN-FORMA).

BACKGROUND: Low back pain is a common condition that becomes even more prevalent with aging. A non-pharmacological multidisciplinary approach for chronic non-specific low back pain (CNSLBP) has been recommended, but integrating different healthcare professionals is challenging. A multidisciplinary group videoconferencing approach (MGVA) can be helpful. Our aim was to provide evidence on MGVA's feasibility in managing CNSLBP and its impact on clinical practice. METHODS: We conducted an open-label, randomized, controlled, parallel-group pilot clinical trial with CNSLBP patients irresponsive to
