Molecular Crosstalk between Artificial Sweetener Aspartame and Diabetes-Linked Insulin Hormone Unveils Possible Amyloidosis Risks.

An important adaptation for diabetes patients is the consumption of artificial sweetener aspartame, which is present in more than thousands of food products and medicines. Several studies have shown diverse side effects of aspartame, and it is also known to form amyloid-like cytotoxic and cross-seeding-competent nanostructures. Here, we reveal a direct crosstalk between aspartame and insulin that induces their cross-seeding and coaggregation events. Insulin's cross-β structure possesses high affinity for aspartame and triggers its self-assembly into cytotoxic nanostructures. Likewise, aspartam

Human and animal epidemic of Yersinia enterocolitica O:9, 1989-1997, Auvergne, France.

Yersinia enterocolitica O:9 infections were reported in Auvergne in 1988 to 1989, while brucellosis due to Brucella abortus was almost eliminated. The serologic cross-reactions between the two bacteria complicated the diagnosis of brucellosis cases. In 1996, human cases of Yersinia enterocolitica O:9 infection were detected, with a peak incidence of 12 cases. Veterinary surveillance could have predicted the emergence of this disease in humans.

[Specificity of serologic diagnostic tests for legionellosis].

Immune rabbit sera and sera of patients with legionellosis, leptospirosis, Q fever and antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi were examined in cross reactions. In currently used serological tests, indirect immunofluorescence and the microagglutination test no antibodies were detected which could cause difficulties in the interpretation of results in the diagnosis of legionellosis. In one patient a mixed infection with Q fever and legionellosis was found.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the detection of antibodies to Hypoderma bovis in cattle.

An adaptation of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay has been shown to detect antibodies in the circulation of cattle infected with Hypoderma bovis. Strong positive reactions were obtained from all infected cattle, even those which harboured only one larva. A strong cross reaction was observed in sera taken from cattle infected with H lineatum, but not in cattle infected with Fasciola hepatica or Ostertagia ostertagi.

Patch test sensitization to D & C yellow No. 11 and simultaneous reaction to quinoline yellow.

The quinoline color D & C Yellow No. 11 was added to a standard test series. Of 88 patients tested with 1% in PEG, four showed unexplained positive test reactions. One patient had a "flare-up" reaction after 14 days. At rechallenge he reacted to a dilution down to 0.00001%. Simultaneous reaction with the chemically related commonly used food color Quinoline Yellow (E 104) suggests cross-sensitivity.

Importance of serological cross-reactivity among Toxoplasma gondii, Hammondia spp., Neospora spp., Sarcocystis spp. and Besnoitia besnoiti.

Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora spp., Sarcocystis spp., Hammondia spp. and Besnoitia besnoiti are genetically related cyst-forming coccidia. Serology is frequently used for the identification of T. gondii, Neospora spp. and B. besnoiti-exposed individuals. Serologic cross-reactions occur in different tests among animals infected with T. gondii and H. hammondi, as well as among animals infected by T. gondii and N. caninum. Infections caused by N. caninum and N. hughesi are almost indistinguishable by serology. Neospora caninum, B. besnoiti and Sarcocystis spp. infections in cattle show some degree

Immunological interrelationships among human and non-human paramyxoviruses revealed by immunoprecipitation.

Antigenic interrelationships among paramyxoviruses were examined by immunoprecipitation of isotope-labelled virus-infected cell lysates with specific antisera against virions or virus components. Sendai virus, human parainfluenza virus type 1 (Pa-1) and human parainfluenza virus type 3 (Pa-3) belonged to one antigenic group, and human parainfluenza virus type 2 (Pa-2), human parainfluenza virus type 4 (Pa-4), mumps virus (MuV) and simian virus 5 to a second group. Furthermore, the human paramyxoviruses Pa-1, Pa-2, Pa-3, Pa-4 and MuV formed a single antigenic group which overlapped the above gr

Collection and administration of blood products in horses: Transfusion indications, materials, methods, complications, donor selection, and blood testing.

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion is a lifesaving treatment for horses with acute hemorrhage and other causes of anemia. Transfusions improve oxygen delivery to the tissues via increased blood volume and hemoglobin concentration. Certain aspects of equine blood transfusion are challenging, especially in the field situation, and practitioners may be unfamiliar or feel overwhelmed with the process. An understanding of the indications, materials, methods, and techniques as well as donor selection and possible complications will help practitioners successfully implement blood transfusion in clinical p

Molecular cloning, expression, and serological evaluation of an 8-kilodalton subunit of antigen B from Echinococcus multilocularis.

Full-length cDNA and genomic DNA encoding an 8-kDa subunit of antigen B from Echinococcus multilocularis (designated EmAgB8/1) were isolated from an E. multilocularis metacestode cDNA library and a protoscolex genomic DNA library, respectively. The open reading frame of the cDNA clone encodes a polypeptide comprising 85 amino acids with a 20-amino-acid NH(2)-terminal signal sequence, which was confirmed following N-terminal sequencing of the native antigen. Reverse transcription-PCR analysis revealed that the clone encoding EmAgB8/1 is predominantly transcribed in larval E. multilocularis. The

Potential Cross-Reactivity Between Penicillin Derivatives and Cephalosporins.

Allergic reactions to both penicillins and cephalosporins are relatively common. Patients who have had a previous allergic reaction to a penicillin derivative may also be prone to a further reaction if treated with cephalosporins. This case illustrates several important points about potential cross-reactivity between penicillin derivatives and cephalosporins, as well as the benefits of an extended-hours pharmacy service in a longterm care facility.

False-positive legionella titres in routine clinical serology testing detected by absorption with campylobacter: implications for the serological diagnosis of legionnaires' disease.

A simple absorption step using blocking fluid prepared from a selected campylobacter strain was introduced in parallel with routine legionella serology tests. Over 12 months, 2716 patients were tested for legionella antibodies by the Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test of whom 58 (2.1%) had a positive titre (> or = 16) in one or more sera. Campylobacter blocking fluid significantly reduced the legionella titres in 17 of these patients (29%) including four patients with diagnostic serology results (two of whom had pneumonia) and 13 patients with non-diagnostic titres. Absorption with campylobact

Is it safe to use carbapenems in patients with a history of allergy to penicillin?

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this retrospective study was to ascertain the clinical safety of administering carbapenems, namely imipenem/cilastatin and meropenem, in patients with a history of penicillin allergy compared with administering carbapenems in patients with no reported penicillin allergy. Carbapenems are similar in chemical structure to the penicillins and therefore are associated with a risk for allergic cross-hypersensitivity. Carbapenems are commonly avoided in patients with a reported penicillin allergy on the basis of a potential cross-hypersensitivity with penicillin, however, v

Patients' perspective on the therapeutic relationship and session quality: the central role of alliance.

In this study, we examined how four components of the therapeutic relationship-working alliance, real relationship, and positive and negative affective reactions of the patient toward their therapist-relate to each other and to the psychotherapy session outcome, from the patient's point of view. Our simple comprised 700 adult patients in individual psychotherapy who were recruited and participated online. They underwent a baseline evaluation of their most recent therapy session, which encompassed a series of validated self-report measures focused on specific elements of the therapeutic relatio

Study of Latex Glove Associated Dermatoses Among Nurses in a Tertiary Care Hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Natural rubber latex (NRL) is processed from Hevea brasiliensis trees. Allergic reactions to certain proteins in the latex manifest as immediate hypersensitivity reactions and allergic reactions to chemicals added to latex during processing manifest as allergic contact dermatitis. Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at increased risk of developing latex allergies. As little data is available from India, this study was directed toward identifying the prevalence of latex glove-related dermatoses among nurses and the factors leading to it. METHODOLOGY: This cross-sectional study was unde

Glycopeptide Hypersensitivity and Adverse Reactions.

Glycopeptides, such as vancomycin and teicoplanin, are primarily used in the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections, such as cellulitis, endocarditis, meningitis, pneumonia, and septicemia, and are some of the most commonly prescribed parenteral antimicrobials. Parenteral glycopeptides are first-line therapy for severe MRSA infections; however, oral vancomycin is used as a first-line treatment of Clostridioides difficile infections. Also, we currently have the longer-acting lipoglycopeptides, such as dalbavancin, oritavancin, and telavancin to our armamentar

[Food Allergy and Intolerance : Distinction, Definitions and Delimitation].

Immunologically mediated hypersensitivity to foods is defined as food allergy, mainly due to immunglobulins of class E (IgE) triggering immediate reactions (type I hypersensitivity) with possible involvement of mucosa, skin, airways, intestinal tract, and the vascular system. Primary food allergy is based on (early) IgE sensitization against animal (e. g., cow's milk, hen's eggs) or plant proteins (e. g. peanut, hazelnut or wheat). In the case of secondary food allergies, IgE against pollen proteins (e. g., birch) reacts to structurally related food proteins (with cross-reactions to stone and

BACKGROUND: Although unexpected and paradoxical, allergic hypersensitivity to corticosteroids is a common finding, delayed-type reactions being much more frequently encountered than the immediate-type ones. Although the skin is the main sensitization and elicitation route, other routes, amongst them systemic administration of corticosteroids may exceptionally be involved. OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency, clinical presentation and cross-reactivity patterns for allergic reactions following systemic administration of corticosteroids amongst patients with identified and investigated 'contac

[Oral allergy syndrome--problem].

History of oral allergy syndrome goes back to 1987 year, when Amlot for the first time used this name for pollen-food cross-reactive reactions. Since that time many kinds of various reactions between pollens and different food had been described. Is seems that after almost 20 years the knowledge about this highly prevalent phenomenon is still incomplete and not well known among specialist other than allergologists. We try to reach consensus on several aspects of this food-induced syndrome, which may be helpful in laryngological practice. It is very important especially for more severe immediat
