OBJECTIVE: To describe the computed tomography (CT) features of corpus luteal cysts.
METHODS: We retrospectively identified 10 patients with a diagnosis of corpus luteal cysts established by ultrasound who had also undergone contemporaneous CT. A single attending radiologist, without knowledge of other clinical or radiologic findings, recorded the morphologic features of the cysts based on the CT images.
RESULTS: The corpus luteal cyst seen at sonography was visible at CT in all 10 patients. All cysts were unilocular, with a mean density of 25 HU (range, 12 to 45). The mean maximum axial cys

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cystic pituitary adenomas and cystic craniopharyngiomas may mimic Rathke cleft cysts when there is no solid enhancing component on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This study aims to investigate the efficiency of MRI findings in differentiating Rathke cleft cysts from pure cystic pituitary adenoma and pure cystic craniopharyngioma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 109 patients were included in this study (56 Rathke cleft cysts, 38 pituitary adenomas, and 15 craniopharyngiomas). Preoperative magnetic resonance images were evaluated using 9 imaging findings. These findings includ

BACKGROUND: Ruptured ovarian cysts are common gynaecological presentation to health institutions with abdominal pain. While this phenomenon is generally self-limiting, surgery may be necessary in cases of haemodynamic compromise or association with torsion. The aim of this audit is to identify the trend of hospital presentations, as well as the review the management of modern gynaecology practice.
METHODS: A retrospective audit of all women who presented to the emergency department with an imaging diagnosis of ruptured ovarian cysts was conducted over a 5-year period at St Vincent's Hospital,

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of aspiration and sclerotherapy with 100% alcohol for the primary treatment of benign scrotal cysts.
METHODS: From March 2014 to March 2018, 114 patients were identified who underwent their first aspiration and sclerotherapy procedure (80 hydroceles and 34 spermatoceles/epididymal cysts). The procedure was carried out in the outpatient clinic with local anaesthesia. A 16-gauge IV catheter is used to puncture the sac under aseptic conditions. The volume of alcohol instilled was 10% of the aspirated volume (maximum of 50 mL). Patients were then observed in th

A ganglion cyst is a noncancerous, fluid-filled swelling that usually forms near joints or tendons, with the wrist and hand being the most common locations. These cysts can range in size from small, pea-sized bumps to larger formations similar to the size of a golf ball, and their texture may vary from firm to spongy. Smaller cysts can be asymptomatic and are usually round or spherical in shape. The skin over the cyst may appear stretched and shiny. Ganglion cysts contain a mucoid, gel-like material rich in mucopolysaccharides. Some cysts occur intratendinously, extending deep into the underly

Peripheral iris pigment epithelial cysts are benign lesions of the anterior segment. They are located at the iridociliary junction and can produce a localised distortion and/or displacement of the iris. Patients who have these lesions are usually asymptomatic and in the absence of a careful slitlamp examination will often remain undetected. The aetiology of these cysts is unknown and they tend to be unilateral and solitary in nature. The cyst walls are composed of iris pigment epithelium and the lumen contains clear fluid. Women are three times more likely to develop these cysts, which must be

The sonographic appearance of echinococcal lesions of the liver was studied in 59 patients. We have proposed a classification of these lesions that reflects the pathology and natural history of the disease: type I, simple fluid-filled cysts; type IR, lesions containing undulated membranes that represent detached endocyst secondary to rupture; type II, lesions that contain daughter cysts and/or a formed echogenic material we call matrix; and type III, dead, densely calcified lesions. The natural progression of hepatic echinococcal cysts is from type I to type III. Daughter cyst formation is par

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a type of salivary gland cancer that can develop in the context of a parotid gland cyst. This type of tumor is composed of mucous, epidermoid, and intercalated cells, and usually presents as a slow-growing and painless mass. A parotid gland cyst is a condition in which a fluid-filled sac forms in the parotid gland. The tumor can be masked as it develops within the parotid cyst. A 45-year-old female patient presented with a suspect of benign neoplasm of the major salivary gland. She underwent partial right parotidectomy, which upon pathological analysis confirmed the

A 28-year-old woman presented with a 1-year history of severe progressive dysmenorrhea following suction evacuation and tubal ligation. Sonography showed a bicornuate uterus with hematometra in the left horn. Hysteroscopy ruled out a diagnosis of a congenital Müllerian anomaly, as both ostia appeared normal. Under laparoscopy, a mass was seen on the left fundal region near the insertion of the round ligament, and needle aspiration of a chocolate-colored fluid confirmed the diagnosis of an adenomyotic cyst. The cyst was excised. The patient recovered well and has been symptom-free since surgery

A 37-year-old man underwent screening examinations, and a pale-colored submucosal tumor was detected on gastric cardia. Endosonography showed a 15-mm cyst with hypoechoic nodules in the muscularis propria, and endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration obtained mucinous fluid with atypical spindle cells positive for c-kit, indicating a gastrointestinal stromal tumor. Surgical resection was recommended, but he initially agreed to surveillance. After becoming larger for 8 years, partial gastrectomy was performed for the 22 × 22 × 15-mm capsulized lesion. Surprisingly, its histology was

A 9-year-old female dog was referred to Azabu University Veterinary Teaching Hospital for dysuria and dyschezia after ovariohysterectomy. After a series of diagnostic imaging, vaginal obstruction was suspected by vaginal fluid retention. Surgical repair was attempted three times to establish patency through the vagina and the vestibule by episiotomy and laparotomy. Another laparotomy was performed to remove the entire vaginal mucosal layer to prevent recurrence, which resulted in favorable outcome. Histopathological examination revealed that the resected tissue was a cyst originated from meson

Choledochal cysts are a congenital disorder of the bile duct, usually presenting in childhood. As they cause weakening of the wall of the bile duct, any distal obstruction, infection or reflux of amylase-rich fluid in the biliary tract can predispose to spontaneous perforation. A 25-year-old pregnant woman at 35 weeks of gestation presented with acute abdominal and fetal distress. On emergency laparotomy, common bile duct perforations were detected. T-tube drainage and caesarean section were performed. A t-tube cholangiogram revealed the diagnosis of a choledochal cyst with an abnormal pancrea

Spinal hydatid cyst is a rare but serious condition. An 8-year-old boy presented with back pain, progressive weakness and numbness in both legs. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lumbar region showed a cystic lesion with regular contour located in extradural space. There was cerebrospinal fluid- (CSF-) like signal intensity on T1- and T2-weighted images. The lesion had excessively compressed the dural sac and caudal roots, and expanded to the L3 and L4 neural foramina. The case was explored with L2, L3, L4 laminectomy and the hydatid cyst was removed totally. The clinical presentation, d

This study reports the infection, diagnosis and treatment of the nematode Parafilaria bovicola in a horse (Equus caballus) in France. A soft, fluctuated and non-painful subcutaneous nodule was observed under the right eye. Ultrasound revealed a mobile verminous element in a fluid cyst. A nematode was surgically extracted from the cyst and further identified as Parafilaria bovicola by sequencing of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene. This first report indicates that horses can be accidental hosts of P. bovicola in enzootic areas.

We report a case of thymic papillo-tubular adenocarcinoma in a 55-year-old man, who had no symptoms. Sternotomy revealed a tumor in the anterior mediastinum, tightly adhered to the pericardium. It was resected completely. Interestingly, the tumor contained a unilocular cyst filled with mucinous fluid, suggesting that it originated from a pre-existing thymic cyst. Pathological examination of the tumor revealed a primary thymic papillo-tubular adenocarcinoma resembling a tumor of gut origin. Thymic adenocarcinomas, particularly of the tubular subtype, are extremely rare.

An urgent liver echinococcectomy due to cyst rupture and peritonitis was performed in 15 children, aged 7-14 years. 10 patients were operated on laparoscopically, 5 children had an open operation. A 4-throacar access was used. After aspiration of free hydatid fluid from the peritoneal cavity, a chitin capsule was aspirated. A fibrous capsule was processed with betadine 1% solution. The cyst cavity was drained. All patients received albendazole (10 mg/kg) during 4 weeks postoperatively. Laparoscopic method proved to be more preferable then open technique.

A 36-year-old man with a mediastinal bronchial cyst was reported. CT showed a mass with water density in the posterior mediastinum. MRI revealed that this mediastinal mass had high signal intensity on both T1-weighted and T2-weighted images. MRI was considered to be useful for the qualitative diagnosis of mediastinal tumors as cystic or solid. An operation was performed and histological diagnosis was bronchial cyst. Intracystic fluid study revealed high titer of total protein, amylase and tumor markers, low titer of glucose and LDH.
