INTRODUCTION: The postpartum coparenting relationship is an important determinant of parental well-being, relationship functioning, and child development during the transition to parenthood. However, most studies combine mothers' and partner's data, limiting the identification of parent-specific predictors of the postpartum coparenting relationship. This study examined predictors of the postpartum coparenting relationship among primiparous Pakistani couples in Karachi by analyzing mothers' and partners' data separately.
METHODS: The full study recruited primiparous mothers and their partners

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depression (PND) is a severe complication of pregnancy, but there are no established risk factors predicting the disease. Evening chronotype has been associated with unhealthy lifestyle habits and adverse outcomes during pregnancy. In this study, we aimed to clarify whether chronotype can predict symptoms and/or occurrence of PND.
METHODS: Two hundred ninety-nine women were followed-up from the first trimester of pregnancy until 6 months postpartum. Chronotype was assessed at baseline using the MEQ, while mood was repeatedly assessed by depression rating scales (EPDS, HD

Affective illness is common in women, and the puerperium is a time of particular vulnerability. Gender differences in the expression of affective disorders have been attributed to the impact of hormonal influence, socialization, and genetics. Dramatic fluctuations in gonadal hormones that occur following childbirth, influences the increased incidence of mood disorders during this time. Numerous tools including the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale can be used to screen for depression during pregnancy and postpartum. While screening tools may assist with appropriately identifying women who

INTRODUCTION: While the strong association of prenatal depression with an increased risk of new cardiovascular disease (CVD) within 24 months postpartum has been demonstrated in two distinct cohorts, it is unclear if treatment of prenatal depression may mitigate this risk. We aimed to estimate the cumulative risk of new CVD and new chronic hypertension in the first 24 months postpartum among pregnant individuals with prenatal depression treated with antidepressant medications or psychotherapy compared with those with untreated prenatal depression. We hypothesized that treatment for prenatal de

Omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 FA) status may be associated with mood disorders. Here, we evaluated the potential association between antenatal depression/anxiety and n-3/n-6 FA in (a) maternal erythrocytes and (b) human milk. In addition, we explored associations between n-3/n-6 FA in erythrocytes and in human milk and postpartum depression, while controlling for antenatal depression. Twenty-seven pregnant women diagnosed with a current major depressive disorder (MDD; n = 9), anxiety disorder (AD; n = 10) or a mixed anxiety-depression disorder (MADD; n = 8), and 40 healthy

BACKGROUND: Postnatal depression is a major public health problem. The aim of this study is to validate the use of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) in the early postpartum, and to identify the markers for risk of postnatal depression.
METHODS: 815 women filled out an EPDS and general information questionnaire between the third and the fifth day postpartum. The women with an EPDS score of >8 and a randomized control group from those with scores of <8 were contacted 8 weeks postpartum. 363 women therefore had a structured diagnostic interview by telephone at 8 weeks postpartum (M

Postpartum depression (PPD) affects approximately 15% of mothers after giving birth. A complete understanding of depression during the postpartum period has yet to be established, although disruptions in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and stress during the postpartum may be involved. To model these components in rats, we administered high corticosterone (CORT) postpartum, which increases immobility in the forced swim test (FST), and reduces maternal care, body weight and hippocampal cell proliferation in dams. The hippocampus is altered in response to chronic stress, exposure to high

Depression and related psychopathologies have turned into a modern bubonic plague. World Health Organization figures signal a worldwide epidemic, affecting > or = 15% of the population and probably > 22% of women of childbearing age. Antepartum and postpartum depression are medical conditions that negatively affect mother and child and that need to be detected as early as possible to avoid or limit the use of pharmacologic treatments, with their possible side effects. The obstetrician should regularly test for depression with simple means from the very first moment of planning for a child and

Personality may influence sleep in perinatal women. A follow-up study was conducted among 3,752 pregnant, then postpartum women at Akershus University Hospital, Norway. The Big Five personality dimensions were measured by the Mini-International Personality Item Pool in week 17 of pregnancy. Insomnia was measured by the Bergen Insomnia Scale in pregnancy week 32 and 8 weeks postpartum, along with self-reported sleep times. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale measured depression, and the Hopkins Symptom Checklist measured anxiety. Adjusted for current anxiety, depression, and demographic va

Perinatal depression (PD) is a significant mental health concern affecting women during pregnancy (antenatal depression, AD) and postpartum (postpartum depression, PPD). The association between AD and PPD is well established, with AD serving as a risk factor for PPD. Additionally, a history of depression and neuroticism have been identified as key vulnerability factors. However, the role of neuroticism remains controversial in the scientific literature, with some studies suggesting it is a stable predictor of depression, while others propose it may exhibit fluctuations in response to life even

BACKGROUND: This retrospective study aimed to identify possible intensification of mental health difficulties among women seeking support in the postpartum period during the epidemic state in Poland. We assumed that the epidemic crisis, social isolation, and restrictions in hospitals which affect pregnant and postpartum women - lack of family labors, lack of the possibility to be with the newborn when he/she is hospitalized, may increase fear and reduce psychosocial resources of women, hinder their normal process of transition to motherhood and thus contribute to the intensified severity of de

BACKGROUND: Postpartum mental disorders including depression and anxiety are common. Medical complications of pregnancy, such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes, are thought to increase the risk of mental disorders postpartum. However, it is unclear which interventions may be effective for preventing and/or treating postpartum mental disorders following a medically complicated pregnancy. We aimed to systematically review published literature on the effectiveness of postpartum interventions to improve women's mental health after medical complications of pregnancy.
METHODS: Systematic rev

By failing to include it under the rubric of the postpartum-onset specifier, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)-IV-TR has ignored the clinical reality that childbirth is a potent trigger of hypomania. Given the serious and occasionally tragic consequences of misdiagnosis of bipolar II depression as unipolar depression in the postpartum period, it is argued that DSM-V should consider modifying the postpartum-onset specifier to include episodes of hypomania.

The purpose of this investigation was to examine: (1) the relations among cortisol reactivity (short term changes in cortisol concentration) and anxiety and depression symptoms in adolescents during pregnancy and early postpartum, and (2) cortisol reactivity and psychosocial variables as predictors of anxiety and depression symptoms in pregnancy and early postpartum. Cortisol reactivity, an index of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal activity, was hypothesized to be a vulnerability factor for poor physical and mental health outcomes in adolescents. Forty adolescents aged 14 to 19 years (M = 17.3,

Currently, no data are available using standardized instruments for evaluating the postpartum mental health of women with previous bariatric surgery. The aim of this pilot study was to assess postpartum mental health in women following bariatric surgery and to establish appropriate tools for a prospective registry study in the future. In this survey, the mental health of 22 women during the first weeks postpartum was examined (T1) and their status at least 6 months after childbirth was prospectively assessed (T2). Symptoms of depression and anxiety were evaluated with standardized questionnair

Mother-infant bonding is crucial for child development. Prenatal mental health and subjective birth experience are both predictors of postpartum bonding. The purpose of this study was to investigate how prenatal depression, anxiety, and stress were related to bonding and whether these relationships were mediated by birth experience. This prospective cohort study included a diverse sample of 108 pregnant women (38% non-Hispanic White, 37% Black, 25% another race/ethnicity) in the Northeastern United States, approximately half of whom had a mental health condition. Participants completed assessm

BACKGROUND: There are limited data on the parenting stress (PS) levels in sub-Saharan African mothers and on the association between ante- and postnatal depression and anxiety on PS.
METHODS: A longitudinal birth cohort of 577 women from Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire was followed from the 3rd trimester in pregnancy to 2 years postpartum between 2010 and 2013. Depression and anxiety were assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire depression module (PHQ-9) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) at baseline, 3 month, 12 month and 24 month postpartum. PS was measured using the Parenting Stress

Depressive and fatigue symptoms are common health concerns for women in the postnatal period. Few studies have sought to investigate the role of fatigue in the development and maintenance of depressive symptoms. The aim of this paper was to examine the relationship between depressive symptoms and fatigue over the course of the first 4 years postpartum, in particular focusing on the extent to which fatigue at earlier time points predicted later depressive symptoms and vice versa. Data from over 1000 women participating in a longitudinal study of Australian women's physical and psychological hea

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety are highly prevalent within the perinatal period and have been associated with myriad adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes. In this study, we sought to investigate whether population-based data can be used to build complex, longitudinal mental health histories that improve our ability to predict adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes.
METHODS: Using population-based, administrative datasets, we examined individual-level mental health services use of all birth parents who delivered a live infant in British Columbia, Canada between April 1, 2000, and December 31
