BACKGROUND: Ammonium persulfate (APS), an oxidizing agent used in hair products, manufacturing, and pool/spa water, can cause skin reactions, including allergic contact dermatitis.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize positive patch test reactions to APS (2.5% petrolatum).
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of patients tested to the North American Contact Dermatitis Group screening series from 2015 to 2018.
RESULTS: Of 10,526 patients, 193 (1.8%) had positive patch test reactions to APS. Compared with APS-negative patients, APS-positive patients were significantly more likely to be male (43.2% vs 28.0%;

BACKGROUND: Various products are available for lightening hair. There are no data on which applications are actually used in hairdressing, impeding proper estimation of actual exposure and necessary preventive measures.
OBJECTIVES: To assess information about availability, usage and formulation of lightening preparations in the German hairdressing trade.
METHODS: A market survey was conducted and hairdressers were surveyed by online questionnaires.
RESULTS: Of 783 hairdressers clicking the link, 565 hairdressers (91.2% female, mean age of 40.2 ± 11.7 years) from all German states responded

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Allergy to natural rubber latex (NRL) reached epidemic proportions during the nineties and led to intense preventive efforts. The aim of this review was to provide a comprehensive compilation of the current status of occupational NRL allergy.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent advances led to the characterization of 15 NRL allergens and the development of assays for measuring the allergen content of NRL materials and specific IgE antibodies against NRL allergen components. Preventive measures aimed at reducing workplace exposure to NRL allergens were associated with decreasing inciden

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) to rubber accelerators is a common occurrence, especially in health care workers, but the risks in family caregivers are not as well documented.
OBJECTIVE: To document a case of a 66-year-old woman who developed recurrent, extensive flares of ACD from contact with rubber accelerators through caregiving.
METHOD AND RESULTS: Patch testing revealed a positive reaction to two common rubber accelerators: carba mix (3+) and thiuram mix (3+). The patient described caring for her disabled husband, which involved handling rubberized medical equipment.

Wet work is the main cause of occupational contact dermatitis in the cleaning industry. Dermatologists and occupational physicians need to base their primary and secondary prevention for workers in the cleaning industry on the characteristics of wet work exposures. We quantified the burden of wet work in professional office cleaning activities with a continuous standardized observation by trained observers of 41 office cleaners. Duration and frequency of wet work exposure and of different cleaning activities were assessed. Wet work made up 50% of such cleaning work. Within a typical 3-hr shift

Hexavalent chromate in cement is the commonest cause of allergic contact dermatitis, especially among construction workers. Over the past decades, there has been a general decline in the prevalence of chromate allergy among construction workers. We suspect that a change in the constituents of cement, resulting in the lowering of hexavalent chromate, contributed to the decline. Slag (free from hexavalent chromate) from the iron-quenched, blast furnace process has been used as a substitute for clinker (which contains high hexavalent chromate) in manufacturing cement. As a result, the slag has di

A survey was made on workers handling powdered drugs in a pharmaceutical factory. In this factory, two kinds of anti-inflammatory enzyme (bromelain and trypsin), one anti-inflammatory agent (flufenamic acid), one antispasmodic (flopropion) and two kinds of antibiotics (ampicillin and cephalexin) are mainly produced. Twenty four workers were examined by interviews and checked by Cornell Medical Index, and 18 of them complained of respiratory symptoms. These 18 workers were physically examined by skin scratch tests, pulmonary function tests and serum immunological tests. Among 24 workers, 9 hand

Contact dermatitis (CD) is among the most common inflammatory dermatological conditions and includes allergic CD, photoallergic CD, irritant CD, photoirritant CD (also called phototoxic CD) and protein CD. Occupational CD can be of any type and is the most prevalent occupational skin disease. Each CD type is characterized by different immunological mechanisms and/or requisite exposures. Clinical manifestations of CD vary widely and multiple subtypes may occur simultaneously. The diagnosis relies on clinical presentation, thorough exposure assessment and evaluation with techniques such as patch

BACKGROUND: The increased frequency of case reports of allergic contact dermatitis from non-permanent black henna tattoos in recent years shows the popularity of this form of body painting.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seven patients presented with allergic contact dermatitis after initial hair or eyelash dyeing. They all had a history of a previous reaction from a black henna tattoo. All were patch tested with the European standard patch test series and the standard supplemental series, as well as special series for dyes and hairdressers.
RESULTS: All seven patients showed a positive reaction in p

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Atopic dermatitis affects a patient's quality of life in many ways. Analysis of the effects of this disease on the lives of adult patients is therefore important for the purpose of better defining their care needs.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We interviewed 14 adult patients with atopic dermatitis in this qualitative study. The interviews were semistructured according to a simple outline to allow for completeness and flexibility and afford greater depth and richness of information.
RESULTS: Atopic dermatitis affected the patients' lives in 6 spheres of activity: economic,

Glyoxal is a dialdehyde that is used as a disinfectant in health care and dentistry work. Allergic contact dermatitis from glyoxal has been described in these occupations. We analysed our patient data from 1998 to 2004 for allergic reactions to glyoxal. 20 patients had allergic reactions to glyoxal on patch testing. 5 of these patients worked in dentistry and 4 of them had present exposure to glyoxal. 9 patients were machinists without obvious exposure to glyoxal. A grinder with work-related facial dermatitis is described in detail. The chemical analysis of air samples from his workplace revea
