Medicated shampoos are part of the standard care of seborrheic dermatitis (SD), yet hair-washing practices can vary in frequency, which could impact treatment effectiveness and therapeutic benefit. The goal of this study is to understand common hair-washing practices in pediatric patients, with focus on Black children with SD, through online survey. Patients identifying as Black or mixed race were more likely to use medicated washes weekly or less frequently than White patients (62.5% vs. 30.8%). It is important that clinicians understand Black- and mixed-race hair care practices to provide be

Dandruff is a common scalp condition, which frequently causes psychological distress in those affected. Dandruff is considered to be caused by an interplay of several factors. However, the pathogenesis of dandruff remains under-investigated, especially with respect to the contribution of the hair follicle. As the hair follicle exhibits unique immune-modulatory properties, including the creation of an immunoinhibitory, immune-privileged milieu, we propose a novel hypothesis taking into account the role of the hair follicle. We hypothesize that the changes and imbalance of yeast and bacterial sp

The pathogenesis of seborrhoeic dermatitis is controversial and remains unclear. Malassezia is considered to be a commensal fungi and is found not only in the stratum corneum but also in hair follicles. It is an important pathogenic factor in seborrhoeic dermatitis. The aim of this study was to clarify the pathogenesis of seborrhoeic dermatitis, morphologically, through comparison with psoriasis vulgaris. Fifteen cases of seborrhoeic dermatitis, 7 of psoriasis, and 6 of normal skin were examined using routine histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy. Macrophages were found

Cradle cap is often viewed as the norm in infancy. It is, however, highly amenable to treatment. While cradle cap generally causes no ill-effects to the newborn baby, new parents may experience disappointment in their attempts to resolve the problem and be distressed by others' response to their infant's appearance. Moisturisers have an important role in softening scale, yet baby oil alone is often not sufficient. Greasier emollients may not be cosmetically acceptable and parental choice can be a key factor in the successful treatment of the problem. Parents may benefit from instructions on ho

Pityrosporum ovale is the yeast form of the dimorphic lipophilic fungus Malassezia furfur which is part of the normal skin microflora in adults. It is suggested that Pityrosporum ovale has a primary role in the pathogenesis of Dermatitis seborrhoides. The aim of the present study was to determine the titer of the common antibodies against superficial antigens of Pityrosporum ovale in the serum of Dermatitis seborrhoides patients and compare the results with the findings of examinations of serum antibodies in healthy subjects and patients with Pityriasis simplex capitis, Pityriasis versicolor,

The presence of seborrhoea, acne, hirsutism and alopecia in women has first been summarized as SAHA syndrome in 1982 and can be associated with polycystic ovary syndrome, cystic mastitis, obesity and infertility. In 1994, the association of these androgen-dependent cutaneous signs, was classified according to their etiology into four types: (1) idiopathic, (2) ovarian, (3) adrenal, and (4) hyperprolactinemic SAHA. The HAIRAN syndrome has been currently described as a fifth variant with polyendocrinopathy. The SAHA syndrome generally occurs in young to middle-aged women and involves either the
