BACKGROUND: In 2019, Canada's Food Guide underwent its first transformation in over a decade. The change received considerable attention given the increased focus on plant-based proteins and the decision to eliminate the milk and alternatives food group. Yet little is known about health professionals' views of these updates. In response, the present study examined Canadian dietitians' attitudes and behaviours towards the guide's expanded plant-based recommendations.
METHODS: A pan-Canadian cross-sectional online survey was administered from January to March 2020 to currently practicing regist

BACKGROUND: Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a malabsorptive condition that can result in intestinal failure (SBS-IF). Many patients with SBS-IF require home parenteral nutrition (PN) for survival. However, PN has profound effects on patients and their family members. The present study aimed to understand the lived experience of SBS-IF for patients and their families.
METHODS: In-depth semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 15 patients with SBS-IF and five adult family members living with someone with SBS-IF. A patient-centric approach was taken, with a patient steering group

BACKGROUND: Cancer cachexia (CC) is a multifactorial syndrome characterised by ongoing skeletal muscle loss that leads to progressive functional impairment driven by reduced food intake and abnormal metabolism. Despite the traditional use of non-volitional weight loss as the primary marker of CC, there is no consensus on how to diagnose and manage CC.
METHODS: The aim of this narrative review was to describe and discuss diagnostic criteria and therapeutic approaches for the accredited practicing dietitian with respect to identifying and managing CC.
RESULTS: Available diagnostic criteria for

Metabolic bone diseases are a group of conditions that are common complications in patients with intestinal failure. These may occur as a result of the underlying condition, leading to intestinal failure, particularly inflammatory conditions such as Crohn's disease and their associated treatments including corticosteroids. Malabsorption, as a result of a loss of enterocyte mass or gut function, of many nutrients, including vitamin D, may further compound metabolic bone problems, and there has been historical contamination of parenteral nutrition with aluminium that has prevented normal bone me

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of Candida infections in paediatric intensive care units (PICUs) has dramatically increased as a result of resistance to conventional anti-fungal treatments. Because vitamin D has been shown to exhibit fungicidal activity against Candida infection in an in vitro antimicrobial screening, we aimed to investigate the effect of vitamin D on Candida infections in the PICU.
METHODS: Four hundred sixteen eligible children aged between 12 months to 5 years old admitted to the PICU, who were on broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy, participated in the study. Patients were rando

BACKGROUND: Certain approaches to managing a strict gluten-free diet (GFD) for coeliac disease (CD) may lead to impaired psychosocial well-being, a diminished quality of life (QOL) and disordered eating. The present study aimed to understand adolescents' approaches to managing a GFD and the association with QOL.
METHODS: Thirty adolescents with CD (13-17 years old) following the GFD for at least 1 year completed the Celiac Dietary Adherence Test (CDAT) and QOL survey. Their approaches to GFD management were explored using a semi-structured interview, where key themes were developed using an i
