[Sports and leisure injuries in summer].

In the first days of summer, there is an increase in the number of summer-related accidents and injuries. Typical for the types of sports practiced in summer, such as ball games, cycling or skating are injuries to the wrist and ankle, knee, head and shoulder. The most frequent victims of swimming accidents are children under four years of age, and adolescents aged between 15 and 19 years. During grilling, burns often occur, most of which, however, are superficial and can be treated in the doctor's office. The incidence of dog bites also increases in summer. In such cases consideration must be

[Suffocation attack].

An acute attack of suffocation is a life threatening event which may be fatal within minutes. Since the oxygen stores of the body are small, any interruption of oxygen uptake by the lungs results in immediate anoxia of tissue and in particular in perilous cerebral anoxia. The primary aims in the management of this emergency situation are: (1.) opening of the airways, clearing any obstruction, and keeping airways open; (2.) administration of oxygen and, if possible, assisted ventilation. This "reflex management" will gain time for diagnostic evaluation, for the decision about further management

A one-year series of pediatric ED water-related injuries: the Hawaii EMS-C project.

During a 12-month period ending on November 30, 1988, data on 133 pediatric patients visiting a pediatric emergency department with water-related injuries were collected. Of these patients, 70% were male. There were 13 submersions, seven cases of head trauma, three cases of neck trauma, 88 cases of external injury, and 34 other injuries. Incidents took place at beaches (75%) in public pools (12%), in friends' pools (4%), and in home pools (4%). Eighty-six percent of the cohort knew how to swim. Swimming, playing, and surfing activity accounted for most of the injuries. Measures for prevention

Suicide from river bridges.

The opening of a new high river bridge in Brisbane allowed a naturalistic experimental testing of whether the sample engaging in suicidal behaviour from the new bridge was similar to that from the adjoining older bridge. Substantial differences were found for the two samples. This suggests that persons prevented from jumping from one bridge, for example by a barrier, will not automatically jump from the alternative bridge although a minority may do so.

Bifid cardiac apex as an incidental autopsy finding: differentiation from apical notch. Report of two forensic cases and a literature review.

A bifid cardiac apex is a rare congenital anomaly resulting from the nonunion of the right and left ventricles at the cardiac apex, producin … tal anomaly, and the patients died from poisoning, sickle cell disease, road traffic accidents, and drowning. In one case, the death was attributed to myocarditis, which was also unrelated to the bifid apex. The incidental discovery of a bifid apex at autopsy indicates its benign nature. Therefore, forensic medicine professionals must not attribute death t …

Living Will and Advance Care Planning in Patients With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Admitted to Specialistic Home Palliative Care.

Objectives: In Italy a recent law was approved for providing patients' wishes regarding end of life issues, commonly referred internationally to as "living wills", (Dichiarazione anticipata di trattamento, DAT). Regardless of this official document, advance care planning (ACP) is often used in a palliative care setting to share the treatments to start, to continue, to withdraw, thus preventing the stress on an acute decision. The aim of this study was to assess DAT and ACP in patients with amyotropic lateral sclerosis admitted to home palliative care. Methods: Patients consecutively admitted t

Instructing children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Examining swim instructors' knowledge building experiences.

BACKGROUND: Although there has been a notable increase in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnoses over the past twenty years, children with ASD continue to be underrepresented in physical activity opportunities. Swimming lessons have been suggested as an ideal form of physical activity for this population, but studies exploring instructors' experiences gaining knowledge specific for instructing these swimmers remains limited. Research in this area is warranted, as drowning is a leading injury cause of death for persons with ASD. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this brief report was to examine swim…

Impact of climate change on health and strategies for mitigation and adaptation.

Climate change and its negative impacts on health are now globally recognized. A wide variety of diseases and health conditions - ranging from heat and radiation-related illnesses to water and vector-borne diseases, under-nutrition, respiratory and cardiac problems, drowning, injuries and mental stress arising from extreme and sudden weather events and their resultant population displacements - all have been associated with various components of changing climate. However, the exact nature and extent of such impacts are yet to be firmly established since many other non-climate factors also prod…
