The prevailing view in bacterial pathogenesis is that antimicrobial resistance and virulence are constrained by evolutionary trade-offs, with resistance mechanisms imposing fitness costs that attenuate pathogenic potential. Herein we document that contemporary Vibrio cholerae clinical isolates from the ongoing seventh pandemic have circumvented this paradigm by coupling multidrug resistance with hypervirulence. We examined five geographically diverse Wave 3 isolates collected between 2017 and 2019 and compared them to early pandemic strains. These contemporary isolates exhibited both broad-spe

BACKGROUND: The understanding of the antibiotic resistance status of environmental nonO1/nonO139 V. cholerae (NOVC) in relation to other illnesses, which can vary in severity from mild to life-threatening, is limited. However, it is important to note that NOVC-related infections are increasing and serve as a significant illustration of emerging human diseases associated with climate change. The primary objective of the present study was to assess the rates of resistance observed in environmental NOVC isolates across various years, and regions, and their resistance rates.
METHODS: We performed

Chicken meat is a major source of foodborne salmonellosis. In Japan, fluoroquinolones and third-generation cephalosporins are the first- and second-choice treatments for Salmonella gastroenteritis, respectively. We investigated the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella in 154 chicken meat products from Hokkaido (42), Tohoku (45), Kanto (5), and Kyushu (62), Japan. Salmonella was isolated from 133 products (86.4%). High resistance rates were observed for streptomycin (56.5%), tetracycline (50.7%), and kanamycin (47.8%), while all isolates were susceptible to cefazolin, cefotaxim

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The densely populated Asia Pacific region is home to 600 million children, and suffers from a significant burden of morbidity and mortality due to infections associated with antimicrobial resistance (AMR). We aimed to identify the drivers, challenges and potential opportunities to alter the burden of AMR within the region.
RECENT FINDINGS: Despite the high AMR burden borne by the Asia Pacific region, there are limited (and geographically imbalanced) published data to delineate the contemporary epidemiology of serious multidrug-resistant bacterial infections in children. Fur

Acinetobacter species have emerged as a significant public health concern due to their remarkable capacity to acquire antimicrobial resistance. Environmental reservoirs play a crucial role in spreading antimicrobial resistance genes and potentially pathogenic bacteria to clinical settings. However, most studies on nonhuman isolates have focused on a limited sample size. Comprehensive population sampling on One Health principles is essential to monitor the antibiotic resistome and virulome in Acinetobacter spp. Here, we identified three carbapenems-resistant Acinetobacter spp. isolates harborin

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become a global health crisis due to the rapid emergence of multi-drug-resistant bacteria. The paucity of novel antibiotics in the clinical pipeline has exacerbated this issue, thereby warranting the development of new antibacterial therapies. The 'Trojan Horse' strategy entails conjugating antibiotics with bioactive components that not only facilitate the entry of antibiotic molecules into bacterial cells by circumventing the membrane barriers, but also augment the effects of conventional antibiotics against recalcitrant pathogens. These Trojan Horse element

We evaluated the HIV-1 reservoir in people with four-class drug-resistant (4DR) virus compared with those without drug resistance. Using the intact proviral DNA assay, we found that both groups had similar levels of intact HIV-1 DNA, suggesting that multidrug-resistant HIV does not significantly alter the size of the reservoir. These findings are a first step in studying the HIV-1 reservoir in the population with multidrug-resistant virus, and further studies are needed to confirm our results.

However, there are few studies on its identification, pathogenic mechanisms, and virulence factors and effective and systematic prevention and control strategies. The emergence and spread of antibacterial resistance has prompted increased focus on R. anatipestifer. However, studies on the mechanisms underlying gene aggregation and dissemination are lacking. This review summarizes recent studies on R. anatipestifer and explores its epidemiology, pat

Antibiotic resistance (AR) is a critical global health threat exacerbated by complex human-animal-environment interactions. Aquatic environments, particularly surface water systems, can serve as reservoirs and transmission routes for AR bacteria. This study investigated the prevalence of AR E. coli in Sinking Creek, a pathogen-impacted creek in Northeast Tennessee. Water samples were collected monthly from four sites along the creek over a 6-month period. E. coli isolates were cultured, identified, and tested for susceptibility to eight antibiotics using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method a

Patients with severe carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) infections currently face significant treatment challenges. When patients display signs of infection and the clinical suspicion of CRAB infections is high, appropriate treatment should be immediately provided. However, current treatment plans and clinical data for CRAB are limited. Inherent and acquired resistance mechanisms, as well as host factors, significantly restrict options for empirical medication. Moreover, inappropriate drug coverage can have detrimental effects on patients. Most existing studies have limitation

The global emergence of antimicrobial resistance to multiple antibiotics has recently become a significant concern. Gram-negative bacteria, known for their ability to acquire mobile genetic elements such as plasmids, represent one of the most hazardous microorganisms. This phenomenon poses a serious threat to public health. Notably, the significance of tigecycline, a member of the antibiotic group glycylcyclines and derivative of tetracyclines has increased. Tigecycline is one of the last-resort antimicrobial drugs used to treat complicated infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacter

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, a ubiquitous environmental bacterium, is an important cause of nosocomial infections. Although banned in some countries, paraquat (PQ) is commonly used to control weeds. In this study, we investigated the effects of increasing concentrations of PQ on S. maltophilia and its antimicrobial resistance. The sequential exposure of S. maltophilia K279a to increasing concentrations of PQ induces the formation of strains with increased resistance to PQ. Among the 400 PQ-resistant isolates tested, 70 clones were resistant to 16 μg/ml ciprofloxacin (CIP), and around 18% of t
